Ace Combat X - Skies of Deception (PSP)

So Namco dropped the bomb and stated in the recent issue of Famitsu that they're developping an Ace Combat game for Sony's PlayStation Portable handheld console scheduled for a fall 2006 release.

I couldn't dig up any other official source besides GameFront.

Stealth Apr 12, 2006 09:44 AM

Sweet. More life for my neglected PSP.

Ramenbetsu Apr 12, 2006 11:23 AM

Awesome, this makes me really happy. Now we need some screenshots!

Sexninja Apr 12, 2006 11:49 AM

Namco should be concentrating more on AC PS3 rather than AC PSP.

Ofcourse AC series will hit PS3,but i cant 'wait' to AC in PS3 glory.

Stealth Apr 12, 2006 12:27 PM

I'm pretty sure the Ace Combat team doesn't actually work on hand held ports.

Skwerl Apr 12, 2006 12:38 PM

hopefully not. I personally do not think PSP is where Ace Combat series belong to.

The way I see it, there hasn't been a lot of companies that actually put a lot of effort into PSP games. I'm sure 95% of their effort is going towards a Big Console Ace Combat.

Mobius One Apr 12, 2006 02:03 PM

Damn it! Now I need a PSP.

Sexninja Apr 12, 2006 03:31 PM

Huh,you dont have it yet,you like MGS dont you?

Man MGSAcid 2 is great and Digital comic coming too so buy it.

Syphonfilter is my next target!

Megalith Apr 12, 2006 04:05 PM

Thanks to all the posers, the Ace Combat series is slowly becoming mainstream, and will soon be ruined as Namco milks the franchise.

Ahahaha, man fuck that. I think AC is still pretty much a die-hard or nothing-at-all series. I can't think of any of my casual gamer friends who are actually interested in it.

I just hope it doesn't turn out like the GBA game and I might consider getting a PSP.

Jay Fox R.W.S. Apr 12, 2006 04:20 PM

This is too good to be true! As for AC becoming more mainstream, the series certainly is more popular since Ace Combat 5, but far from mainstream. I haven't met one person in real life who's heard of it or likes it.

Funniest post of the year. I can imagine it now: Ace Combat Underground. Pimp your plane with unlockable rims, bodykits, paintjobs, and spoilers!

Sexninja Apr 12, 2006 06:28 PM

Update, the full title is

'Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception'.

Does anyone know why this looks good.

Skwerl Apr 12, 2006 07:18 PM

from the look of it, it seems as though Namco is going to use this as one of the last chance to profit from the AC4-Zero engine. Nevertheless, it looks great on psp as well.

Because that's how they reel you into buying something on the PSP.

Oh Ridge Racer PSP, how I love you so...

Mobius One Apr 12, 2006 08:10 PM

Wow, that looks great! PSP ftw. What's that plane in the lower right screenshot? It looks like an F-16.

I think that's an F2-A, first introduced in Ace Combat 2. They seemed weaker than F-16s when I fought them in AC2.

There's some more info on IGN here. Seems it'll have 4 player co-op among other things. I wonder if they'll make it somehow connect with Ace Combat 6 for extra planes.

Stealth Apr 13, 2006 08:47 AM

Doubt it, not every game has to have PS3 connectivity.

The Coop does sound great though.

Rock Apr 13, 2006 10:11 AM

It's going to be a solid game. Not quite the epic scale of 5 and Zero, but a satisfying experience at least. I'd love to have Ace Combat on my PSP. I can also imagine that the controls will be just fine.

A dynamic campaign with strategy elements sounds good, too.

Jay Fox R.W.S. Apr 13, 2006 10:48 AM

It will probably be Ace Combat 4-ish (few missions, lots of replayability, arcade elements like emphasis on getting high scores).

seanne Apr 13, 2006 12:05 PM

Great news.

Looking at the screenshots the game looks very good for what is presumably a very early stage of development. The lower left pic is particularly interesting. Perhaps NAMCO are finally doing something about the shitty perspectives from previous games (note how the ship actually seems to be a lot larger than the plane and not vice versa).

Now, can anyone figure out what the additional hud displays at the top-left/right are supposed to be.

Megalith Apr 13, 2006 12:12 PM

I heard a rumor that objects on the ground appear smaller as you go higher in the air.
