Darwin the Monkey (Game Rip) - Darwin's Spirit Nifty world-music vibe , something that doesn't seem to crop up as much as it should around here. Very impressive.
Galaxy Robo (Game Rip) - Scramble Attack Reminds me a bit of Dynamite Headdy, with a similar overall vie and great melody/rhythm. Nice! GUWANGE Arrange Album + Original Sound Track - Underworld Cherry Blossoms (Stage 3) Whenever cherry blossoms pop up in track titles I fear the music will be all ehru and taiko. This piece has a definite slant in that direction, but it's more focused on being all ambient, electronic, and vaguely mysterious. Has its moments, but seems a little bloated. Kimi ga Nozomu Eien Game Arrange Soundtrack - Sunlight Very 1980's sitcom in its use of sax and guitar. Pure cheddar, but not all bad. Mickey's Speedway USA (N64 Game Rip) - Battle Mode - Steamboat Looks like someone followed through on their BSC threat! Sadly, this song just doesn't measure up with a lot of bongo beats and not much else. Sakura Wars V ~So Long, My Love~ Vocal Collection New York Complete Song Works - Shining Constellation Jap Bitch Can't Sing Weak was last week, pal! Way to miss the boat :) In all seriousness, this is a pretty standard species of moon song: the light romantic ballad. Not much to distinguish it from the light romantic ballads attached to hundreds of other JRPG's. SkyRoads (Game Rip) - Twilight Zone Decent chiptunage, though a stronger melody would have helped make the best of its rather unique soundscape. Yakusoku no Hi ni wa Kimi to Futari de ~ Kono Subarashiki Fukaku Sekai e - Kono Subarashiki Fukaku Sekai e (Original Ver.) More moon language in a slightly more poppish vein, lasting forever and ever. Meh. This week has almost as much singing as last week, and there's a vast chasm of quality between the tops and bottoms. The Point Spread Darwin's Spirit - 3 pts. Scramble Attack - 2 pts. Twilight Zone - 1 pt. |

Oh I noticed how my music taste is starting to heavily diverge from you guys, haha. A bit of a pity, had more people understood the absurdity of japs can't sing weak in a completely normal weak following directly the official one, that would have been lol.

Finally, an average week.
3 points: Battle Mode - Steamboat 2 points: Scramble Attack 1 point: Underworld Cherry Blossoms (Stage 3) Just Missed: Darwin's Spirit, those two vocal tunes Rofl at the vocal spillover from the previous week. Most likely wouldn't have given either Shining Constellation or Kono Subarashiki points had they appeared last week, though they're still solid, if a bit generic. What was up with that abrupt shift at the beginning of Kono Subarashiki, though? I'll probably never know. I was 80% certain that Sunlight was going to be another vocal when it started up. And, to be honest, I probably would've liked it better if it was that, instead of the sax-infused pop fusion we got here. Darwin's Spirit: I like the earthy tribal feel here. Cool choral work too. But arghhh why is it so short? This tune sets itself up for tons of development and doesn't deliver, a huge shame. Twilight Zone: Sounds like one of those tunes that play during one of those "psychological thriller"-type indie games that exist everywhere on the internet. What, and why. I'll admit, I haven't heard this GUWANGE Arrange album yet (there's 4 of them, right), so Underworld Cherry Blossoms is new to me. Surprisingly nice piano work, especially in the beginning, and nice percussive noise throughout. Melody sounds a bit different, though that's a non-issue, I'm very pleased with this arrangement. Best tune this week by far by far (that isn't my nom) is Scramble Attack. I've listened to this like 30+ times it is so awesome oh my god So yeah, not the best week, though previous weeks have set my standards ridiculously high. |
3 points: Darwin the Monkey (Game Rip) - Darwin's Spirit
2 points: Mickey's Speedway USA (N64 Game Rip) - Battle Mode - Steamboat 1 point: Galaxy Robo (Game Rip) - Scramble Attack Yeah, a pretty average week compared to the last few. Still, some nice discoveries as usual, specifically the delightfully zany "Steamboat" and the ohgodawesome yet somewhat repetitive "Scramble Attack". I happen to think "Darwin's Spirit" retains a nice sense of simplicity by being so short, but I agree that it would have been interesting had the composition been developed more. It was interesting hearing an arrangement of one of my first ever SotW discoveries ("Underworld Cherry Blossoms"), but I ultimately prefer the original. and re. "Sunlight": the 'terrible choice of nom from an otherwise awesome album' award goes to..*vicious drumroll* |

I thought Scramble Attack would be too repetitive, but it came out on top! Guess it pays to nominate these obscure SNES tunes.
