Man, I hated this week. But I'm glad we did it.

I have ears of steel. I kinda search out VGM songs with Japanese vocals because I'm more attracted to the music behind it (and since I don't understand the language, I consider the vocal work an instrument (albeit, sometimes a shrill one)). So yeah, I don't really mind this week at all lol.

iFUTURELIST - April Fool Song
This song just confuses me. I guess I like it?

marble / TOMOSUKE - The Caged Bird
This one wasn't bad. A bit too weird for its own good, but still decent.

PERSONA3 Original Soundtrack - Changing Seasons
God damnit I remember this song and how badly the first notes always raped my ears while playing P3 why would you nominate this

The Pink Panther's Passport to Peril Original Soundtrack - Mummification
Haha, this was fun. I also definitely don't have any desire to listen to it again.

Sakura Taisen Complete Sound Box - Continuation of the Dream
Kind of standard and unoriginal, but still nice enough.

Shikkoku no Sharnoth Preorder Bonus Original Soundtrack - DORCHADAS -Sharnoth OP theme-
Hell yeah I love this song.

Tongari Boushi to Mahou no 365 Nichi Original Soundtrack - 365 Days of Pointy Hats and Magic

This theme week was something else. We should try to do this again soon, and include those few leftover noms along with a potential one of mine.

3 Points - Dorchadas
2 Points - April Fool Song
1 Point - Mummification

marble / TOMOSUKE - The Caged Bird - I clearly heard Touhou's Kagome-Kagome in this. What is this?

orion_mk3 Jul 18, 2010 04:27 PM

iFUTURELIST - April Fool Song Seriously deranged at first, then outright weird later on.

marble / TOMOSUKE - The Caged Bird The instrumental portion was a bit out there, but the lyrics were surprisingly nice.

PERSONA3 Original Soundtrack - Changing Seasons It's the endless, unchanging loops of Persona plus wordless lyrics plus mariachi...madness!

The Pink Panther's Passport to Peril Original Soundtrack - Mummification Wow, lyrics that I can understand! This one's actually pretty good, with a sassy Motown vibe and some silly (yet educational!) lyrics.

Sakura Taisen Complete Sound Box - Continuation of the Dream Pretty much a carbon copy of every other bubblegum J-Pop that's been slapped into a game. At least the others are silly or a howling portal into gibbering realms of insanity.

Shikkoku no Sharnoth Preorder Bonus Original Soundtrack - DORCHADAS -Sharnoth OP theme- Aside from some accordian, pretty much the same as the last tune with adult instead of pubescent singers.

Tongari Boushi to Mahou no 365 Nichi Original Soundtrack - 365 Days of Pointy Hats and Magic Half English, half moontongue, all affable silliness.

You Don't Know Jack 4: The Ride (Game Rip) - The Boy From Chichen Itza Pretty much a straight parody (in a language we can all understand!), but I loves it.

The Point Spread
The Boy From Chichen Itza - 3 pts.
Mummification - 2 pts.
365 Days of Pointy Hats - 1 pt.

Muzza Jul 19, 2010 12:26 AM

iFUTURELIST - April Fool Song is amazing. It's so off-the-wall, makes no sense, and is hilarious on a number of levels, I love it. The ending is way neat too and acts as a great, cooling contrast; I'm glad it was left on!

marble / TOMOSUKE - The Caged Bird is, eh, less my cup of tea. I really don't like the vocals and the electronic backing is annoying after a while.

I enjoy the quasi-Mariachi elements in PERSONA3 Original Soundtrack - Changing Seasons, but that's about it. The rest feels overwhelmingly mundane and there isn't enough intrigue or intricacy in the vocals or development to sustain my interest.

Aww some of the melodies in The Pink Panther's Passport to Peril Original Soundtrack - Mummification are so cool and exude a nice motown, jazzy atmosphere. The sax work is infectious and the song on the whole is wonderfully entertaining. A+ would listen to again

The Sakura Taisen Complete Sound Box is fantastic, and despite it being a while since I've listened to any of it, I think Sakura Taisen Complete Sound Box - Continuation of the Dream is a good choice to nominate. It's generic, but it's melodious and cheesy with a great broadway musical sound to it. 1:45 (the chorus) is a crazy amount of fun and nicely demonstrates the vigour of the vocal performance(s).

I absolutely loved Shikkoku no Sharnoth Preorder Bonus Original Soundtrack - DORCHADAS -Sharnoth OP theme- when I first heard it, but sadly it doesn't hold the same lustre for me any more. The highlight is definitely the chorus and the superb accordion lead-up to it, however the rest of the track can't match it and ends up sounding sub-par in comparison rather than complementary (the awkward transition to the second loop makes this hugely apparent). I can't praise that chorus enough, though; and the final note is wonderful. "Tystrya" is the better Blueberry&Yogurt OP though, it's much better rounded.

:3: Tongari Boushi to Mahou no 365 Nichi Original Soundtrack - 365 Days of Pointy Hats and Magic has a number of fantastic melodies all neatly held together by a smart structure and some flawlessly tuneful & varied vocals. It's one of the sweetest non-chipmunk songs I've heard (save 2:09 (?)) and has an air of sophistication and elegance to balance things out. Special mention to 3:30 :3333: Masanori Adachi is a frighteningly absurd genius.

You Don't Know Jack 4: The Ride (Game Rip) - The Boy From Chichen Itza is cool, if way too understated. Some more development of the guitar sections would make this a winner, but as it stands it's a monotonous novelty song with the lyrics being the only saving grace. I qualify this scathing comment by noting the melody is strong and will likely stay with me~

jap bitch can't POINT out what's wrong with her singing

I liked this week. Not as much as last week, but still good.

The in-game version of The Caged Bird is more focused than the long version here, but the first 36 seconds of this one are the best part of either version, so I went with the long one. I love how all of Orange Lounge's pieces are happy-go-lucky bossa except this one, what the hell was TOMOSUKE on (so I can give it to him again).

Masanori Adachi only composed (and wrote the lyrics for) 365 Days; Tomoko Sano was responsible for the arrangement. (She's the TOMO who did "Song for Spinning Silver Thread" from Moon, one of my favorites.) I felt obligated by my extreme respect for Masanori Adachi to point out that someone other than him was also responsible for the music, potentially the majority of it. I like the carnivalness of it, it's pretty fun.

COULDN'T TELL THAT THE SAKURA TAISEN TRACK IS AN ENDING THEME FROM THE FIRST FOUR SECONDS NO SIR (Takayuki Negishi knows what he's doing, so it's an alright tune, but ST has much better songs)

Most of DORCHADAS was a bit too H-game opening theme for me, but I like the time switch into the chorus, and really like the lead-down from the chorus the first time (1:42-1:54).

Yamaoka what exactly do you think you are you doing

Darkcomet72 Jul 19, 2010 08:09 AM

Guys I totally didn’t fall asleep in the middle of writing this.

Just Missed: The Boy from Chichen Itza, The Caged Bird

As another week, it’s pretty good. I haven’t felt this firm about a point spread in a long while.

I’m really curious to see what the context for The Boy from Chichen Itza is. It’s probably meant to be humorous and nothing more, but I somehow found it to be incredibly morbid. Really cool, but other than the lyrics, nothing notable.

Continuation of the Dream: I really, really liked this tune when I was listening to it; solid melody, well varied instrumental, this song had a lot to show off. But then the slow section ended with that and that ridiculous build with the drumroll and everyone comes onto the stage dancing and augghghghbwrgpjffodpmdfopbrbdwmw jesus christ. This song would’ve ended perfectly if they just extended the slow section and left it at that.

Both The Caged Bird and Changing Seasons are tunes that, for me at least, probably wouldn’t sound at all different had the vocal parts been removed; that is, the vocal is more in the background than the instrumental. I mean what, the woman speaking French very softly pretty much amounts to most of the actual vocal in the latter piece. Can’t complain though, the instrumentals are pretty badass, particularly the soundscape in Caged bird and especially the funk/disco stylings of Seasons (plus that bass line omg).

And of course the obligatory Celtic sounding tune. DORCHADAS is well done, if not a bit serviceable.

April Fool Song: Love the 80s sounds in this. Also the girl singing sounds very angry most of the time for some reason. Especially loved the ending that was over a minute of something not related to this tune at all why Yamaoka why

Oh my god Mummification is not only completely awesome but it’s also educational, not unlike Schoolhouse Rock. If I wasn’t so enamored with Pointy Hats, this would be an easy 3 pointer.

Oh yeah by the way I am so enamored with 365 Days of Pointy Hats, even though I can’t make out any of the words (It’s all in English, right?). It’s such an amazingly inventive piece; reminds me heavily of Super Paper Mario music at times. Love love love it.

Very impressed with the variety this week, I was worried that we were gonna be subject to 8 similar sounding J-pop tunes or something.

EDIT: Oh wow what's this about Pointy Hats being an arrangement of an Adachi tune? That explains a hell of a lot, and only further cements my point spread.

It doesn't really have one. All the YDKJ games are faux radio game shows, and during the credits they play parody commercials and songs.

I had been considering nominating April Fool Song for a normal week, but it seemed to work well with this theme week. I probably would've wanted the ending cut off, because what the hell Yamaoka. I really want to find out the source/reasoning/thought/whatever behind that little "OH OH OH Wedding day" segment. Oh, and then you get the intro to Heavenly Sun as a bonus on the track too.

This actually turned out to be a fun themed week.

(2 points) marble - TOMOSUKE - The Caged Bird
I didn't know what to make of the vocals initially but they turned out to be very nice in the end, as with the rest of the track. The child-like and folk inflections in the vocals add a lot of character.

(2 points) PERSONA3 Original Soundtrack - Changing Seasons
I could never get enough of this tune when I was playing the game. It's bouncy, fun and strangely uplifting. Particularly like the interplay between the vocals and the piano parts in the beginning.

(1 point)Tongari Boushi to Mahou no 365 Nichi Original Soundtrack - 365 Days of Pointy Hats and Magic
Very charming, this piece. Reminds me of something you'd hear from a game with story book visuals.

(1 point) Shikkoku no Sharnoth Preorder Bonus Original Soundtrack - DORCHADAS -Sharnoth OP theme-
Really liked the Irish pub vibes of the song. The chorus kind of reminds me of I've Sound.

Love the lyrics for The Boy From Chichen Itza, by the way.

Well colour me a pleasant shade of surprised. :3: Nice placings there (so close!), except I agree, where was all the Mummification love. :(

Going by the comments, had this been a lyrics week Chichen Itza would have won by about 30 points.
