Israel threatens Libyan aid ship
Quote:

The Israeli navy has threatened to take action, should the Gaza-bound Libyan aid ship refuse to change course, says an organizer onboard the vessel.

"Israeli authorities have given us until midnight tonight to change course and head to the (Egyptian) port of El-Arish, otherwise they are threatening to intercept the boat with their navy," Mashallah Zwei was quoted by AFP as saying on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day reports suggested that the Israeli navy had already intercepted the ship, the Amalthea, which seeks to deliver humanitarian supplies to the besieged people of Gaza.

An Israeli military spokesman said, "The navy has begun preparations for stopping the ship, should it attempt to violate the naval blockade."

Libya's Gaddafi International Charity and Development Association, headed by the second son of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, organized the Moldovan-flagged Amalthea.

The aid ship set sail from the Greek port of Lavrio with 12 crewmembers and 2,000 tons of relief supplies and is expected to reach the Gaza shore on Tuesday night.

In May, a flotilla of almost a dozen ships carrying aid to Palestinians was attacked in international waters by Israeli commandos. The brutal attack left at least nine activists dead and 50 others wounded.
NO MORE WIRE HANGERS

What the fuck. I thought that Israel already promised to back off on their crazy overreactions to aid ships?

Bradylama Jul 13, 2010 09:36 AM

Hahaha, you believed Israel?

Sarag Jul 13, 2010 10:18 AM

Where does the U.S. stand on this? Publicly, anyway.

Probably in a dark corner of the room smoking a cigarette.

Gaza aid ship docks in Egypt - Middle East - Al Jazeera English

so I guess they pussed out and docked in El-Arish, there's a lot of sad IDF commandos with itchy trigger fingers in Tel-Aviv tonight :(

What a misleading topic title. "Libyan ship's about to illegally enter Israeli waters" would be much more appropriate.

The unmovable stubborn Jul 14, 2010 04:54 PM

"Libyan ship's about to illegally enter Israeli waters in order to deliver relief supplies" would be even more appropriate.

"Libyan ship's about to illegally enter Israeli waters in order to deliver relief supplies, is threatened with military action in order to prevent them delivering said supplies" would basically convey every important detail in the story, but it doesn't make a very snappy headline.

Strictly speaking Brady's title is just as accurate as yours, it just doesn't skew to your own views. In Brady's worldview, the RELIEF SHIP is the victim, whereas in your worldview the ISRAELI WATERS are the victim of... having... a boat... in it....

Much better now. I think you'll agree.

Bradylama Jul 15, 2010 02:12 AM

I dunno how the modern maritime law deals with it, but blockade runners aren't strictly speaking illegal under international law, although states do have the right to intercept them (assuming the Israeli blockade wasn't illegal, which it is).

Wrong. The "relief supplies" bit is unverified.

Wrong again. Strictly speaking Brady's title is a blatant lie, while mine is the objective truth.

The victims of what? Of being informed that upon breaking laws they are to face consequences?

Not really. Actually, Israeli citizens are the victims of terrorist attacks committed using the weapons supplied to Palestinian terrorists. And, in case you're wondering, sometimes the weapon supplies are disguised as humanitarian aid.

Sarag Jul 15, 2010 09:03 AM

I feel like I'm missing something in this discourse.

Deleting a newbie's posts every time we disagree with them is an excellent solution that definitely won't result in the forum turning into a circle-jerking ghost town!

I tend to agree with this.

Sorry fellow staff bro I'm gonna undo this :(

It seems to me that last I checked boats could be boarded and their contents inspected, but if the Israeli policy toward unverified cargo is to BLOW IT UP I guess that's just kind of one of those agree-to-disagree things.

See, even if we accept as fact every single one of your presumptions about the situation it still looks really stupid.

No. Hard Pass. Jul 15, 2010 01:48 PM

My favourite distinction in this is that when Palestine does it, it's terrorism. When Israel does it, it's national defense.

Cute.

The unmovable stubborn Jul 15, 2010 02:00 PM

This is an easy distinction to make when you don't recognize that the other nation even has a right to exist.

Bradylama Jul 15, 2010 04:59 PM

The port authorities at El-Arish don't seem to have found any hidden weapons caches.

Although even if the ship did have weapons on board I would support it, because Palestinians have the right to defend themselves against Israeli encroachment. Of course, nothing the Palestinians could get their hands on could possibly bridge the gap with a military that has remote-controlled machineguns on its apartheid wall.

Here's a story on them.

It's an all-female unit too. Truly the IDF is the most feminist of killing machines. ^_^

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Jul 16, 2010 04:55 AM

Remote control machine guns are no match for optimistically aimed 1970's soviet rpgs and home made bombs though are they Brady. That's why the Israelis use helicopter gunships to capture political opponents.

Indeed. That is if they wish to cooperate. When they don't, the only option is to use force.

It isn't.

The keyword is wrong. I'll fix it. What Palestine does is terrorism. What Israel does is national defense.

It's pretty simple. Randomly killing civilians is terrorism. Preventing that is national defense. Any questions?

The unmovable stubborn Jul 16, 2010 08:02 AM

I have a question.

Your beverage, there. Is it actually Kool-Aid, or did you skimp and get the Flavor-Ade at Family Dollar?
