Transformers: War for Cybertron - You Rock Like Stan Bush

Quote:

Transformers: War for Cybertron is a third person shooter that takes place prior to the Transformers: Prime animated series, when the Transformers still lived on the fictional machine planet Cybertron. The game has two distinct campaigns, one for each faction. The story of the Decepticon campaign is a prelude to the Autobot campaign's story. Both campaigns can be played in single-player or cooperatively via online multiplayer, and can drop in or out of the game at any time.[3] Each campaign level features three playable Transformers. If fewer than three players are present, the game's AI controls the remaining playable characters.[3]
For all Transformers fans, the game is out.
Gametrailers gave it 7.7, but based on the trailers and review, it sure looks more like 8.8.

I'm planning to buy this, but does anybody know if Activison have a similar history like Capcom for launching similar games months after the first game is released?
Capcom pulled this for Resident Evil 5 and Street Fighter IV. I don't like pay more money for a similar game.
I love Capcom games, but I hate their marketing strategy for milking our pockets.

Bradylama Jun 25, 2010 03:34 PM

I didn't know Cybertron was fictional.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Jun 25, 2010 03:46 PM

Horrible OP for a fantastic game.

RE5Gold was essentially a GOTY edition for a game no one called GOTY. Are you seriously complaining about that? You could buy most of the DLC additions separately, y'know. And SSFIV is a fighting game sequel, so stop being ridiculous.

No, it's unlikely there will be a re-release of this later. If you're worried about sequels and only want to buy one game in any franchise ever should the second one be, horror of horrors, similar to the first, then yeah maybe this one will get it. It's experiencing some decent popularity and good word of mouth, and since High Moon is a full subsidiary of Activision it'll probably be forced into doing more of the same should it be a financial success.

All that aside, it's got the G1 chops to get shit done, the designs are modern and at the same time pretty good homages, and it's the first game to use the transforming as something more than a gimmick. It works well, the multiplayer is a blast, and it's an all around fun and entertaining package. If you have any love for the source material it's worth a check out, and it's a very solid shooter on top of all that.

Also Deni sucks at it.

Bradylama Jun 25, 2010 03:50 PM

The media blitz for this game is pretty significant so I wouldn't put it above Activision to re-release this when it sells like gangbusters

On the other hand do you really care about that if you're going to play it now?

You wish.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Jun 25, 2010 07:01 PM

Speaking of sequels.

Wired's interview with Peter Cullen. At 15:35 he lets slip that he's already voiced a second game.

Activision wastes no time I suppose.

Animechanic Jun 28, 2010 04:37 AM

I guess that means they consider it successful already. Unfortunately that also means that it has fallen into their stable of franchises that will be exploited yearly no matter the cost to game quality.

Additional Spam:
Man did I get an awesome killstreak going in team deathmatch last night. Turns out if you save your killstreak rewards you can activate them simultaneously in reverse order. I had the leader's P.o.K.E. 2.0 and Thermo Mine Dispenser perks on at the same time and became some kind of avatar of death, cutting down those in front of me and blowing up those behind.

I think I got 23 kills that round, which is particularly amusing since the round ends when a team gets 40 total.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Jun 28, 2010 08:47 PM

Good tips on EMP shotgun over Steam, too. I dismissed it because it seemed so inconsistent in my early runs with it. I would ditch it for the Scatter Blaster at first chance, but once I figured out the optimum range I've been headshotting motherfuckers with it like no one's business. They mad. 18 and 3 that way.

The game has a piece of shit zoom toggle instead of just hold-the-button-to-zoom, that keeps being turned on even while I recharge the weapon. Anybody knows how to turn that to "hold-the-button"? That thing pisses me off to no end, it's even more annoying than accidentally clicking "restart level" instead of "restart from checkpoint" at the very end of a stage. Which I just did.

Omega Supreme is an asshole.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Jun 30, 2010 12:12 AM

It occurred to me Cullen may also be referencing Cybertron Adventures on the Wii, but I certainly hope not.

It does? It sure doesn't with the Battle Pistol (5x zoom)or Burst Rifle (2x zoom) guns.

Maybe you're having trouble pressing buttons properly, if you're stuck zooming and can't select the right menu option. May I suggest replacement hands.

No. Hard Pass. Jun 30, 2010 12:26 AM

Yeah, it's a hold down zoom system. I don't know what Boris is talking about.

Animechanic Jun 30, 2010 06:44 AM

Has anyone even seen the Demolishor pre-order character online yet?

I got Jazz from Best Buy and have seen one or two others running around, but I mostly just see Shockwave everywhere.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Jun 30, 2010 10:13 AM

ARen't those Escalation only? They don't give you extra chassis IIRC. I have NEVER seen Shockwave or Jazz about in regular multi and I haven't played enough escalation with randoms to see.

Angel of Light Jun 30, 2010 12:51 PM

Due to Skills request, I myself have just purchased this game just today, and give me a day or two to get use to the controls since I'm going to be incredibly busy and I'll see the rest of you fuckers online.

SimDaddyGT Jun 30, 2010 01:21 PM

You know we'll all still be playing this for the next 6 days for sure.

Reminds me. Skills, we need to plan Wave 15 attempt #3 soon, or was it 4? I forget. All I know is, I need to try someone other than Warpath at some point.

Single Elbow Jun 30, 2010 01:33 PM

I'm down for some escalation later on today after I get home.

The pre-order bonus characters are available in escalation, where they have their own paintjob and skillset (Jazz has energon barrier and molleculon bomb). You also get to use their chassis in multiplayer, you're just limited to the usual autobot or decepticon paint colors.

Everything I've seen was all in random multi. I haven't even tried escalation cuz so ronery.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Jun 30, 2010 05:27 PM

When we try escalation again, we're going to try a slightly different approach. Someone needs to be a barrier dropper, someone needs to be Optimus for the buff, and we're going to open a different door first (but the usual one second) to get to the heal beam.

Hantei Jun 30, 2010 05:45 PM

For Escalation I recommend using characters with cloak. It's a great skill for getting out of a pinch, especially for the waves when Titans and Brutes appear. Though if you're not careful, the Brute's EMP stomp knocks you out of it. Arcee is probably the best, because you can use her shockwave ability and still stay cloaked.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Jul 1, 2010 12:19 AM

Air Raid has cloak and can fly over the Shockwave, so he's viable too. Whirlwind is also great versus Titans so I'd recommend him.

We got to 17 tonight as Air Raid, Ratchet, and Optimus. The random who replaced Deni was far more useful than the standing-there-like-a-lamp-post that is the Saskatchewan play style, so it worked out.

It is? What the hell. Probably some PC-version-single-player-only thing then. No one bothers testing that anymore.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Jul 3, 2010 04:30 PM

Bitches don't know about my EMP Shotgun. Great double kills are great. Full tilt plane mode, transform, and while skidding not only melee one fucker but turn around and one-shot EMP shotgun his friend before even coming to a stop.

Shit be so cash.

Now you talk about your moments of badassery.

Following a bad case of shitty team balancing in Conquest (not sure why, but I wound up in a 3-on-1-on-6 session where I was the 1), I managed to pull some great moves out of nowhere in FFA and TDM matches.

Switched Soldier's gun to the chain (forgot the name), got 4 Double Kills, 3 Triple Kills, and 2 5-Kill Streaks with it. That gun is my Soldier's best friend.

Also had 2 moments where I took someone out, threw a grenade, it bounced off a wall, and took someone else out, resulting in 2 of the Double Kills.

Found out what the deal with this was. they weren't available online until after the first update/patch. Before that you couldn't select the bonus chassis online. And people who pick Shockwave are idiots. The most easily identifiable chassis and then try to do the Spy thing with it? Assholes get shot.

They're gonna be part of the DLC though, along with 2 more skins and two maps. Hopefully that regenerates some of the player base. Game's not even a month old and the online count has dropped to about 15 to 20 percent of week one numbers, or about 30 percent of week 2 numbers. :(

Also, game contains no point bonus for brutally fucking up the entire enemy team nor quintuple kills. :(

As a leader, coming up to a point with Poke, killing two guys with it and then throwing mines and swords everywhere as you quickly kill the remaining three in a huge flurry of explosions and death is fucking SWEET AS HELL THOUGH.

PS chanic, Ion Blaster > Frag Launcher by a huge margin. Leader becomes so much more useful at that point.
