Double Week
Voting will last for two weeks in order to give paricipants more time to participate in the Best Song Contest 2010.

I think you'd be right in supposing that. All two-week voting periods will be clearly marked :)

Advance Wars 2 - Black Hole Rising (Game Rip) - Battle Fanfare I remember this from the BSC a few years back. Good stuff, but it suffers from the sound quality issues that bedevil all Advance Wars music (talk about a series that needs an official, remastered OST pronto pronto!).

Deadly Premonition (Game Rip) - Woods and Angels As you might expect for a game that combines Twin Peaks with zombie killing, Deadly Premonition is hella weird. This Angelo Badalementi-inspired piece is a nice highlight, providing the perfect dreamy and troubled atmosphere.

Fittest - Original Soundtrack - Dreams of Cobalt Digging the great electronic effects in this one, not to mention the piano.

Marching Grass on the Hill - Waterfall Really nice Philip Glass inspired piece, this. Just fantastic.

Oboromuramasa Original Soundtrack - Tacit Understanding I was a bit disappointed with Oboromuramasa, which sounds to my ears to be aping Okami (especially after the stunning Odin Sphere by the same peeps). The beat's fine, but the instrumentation and rather weak melody are comparative turn-offs.

OutRun 20th Anniversary Box - STEP ON BEAT [Original] Decent enough, but not quite the oldschool powerhouse one might hope for.

The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang (Game Rip) - Foreboding Desert Temple I'm surprised this title hasn't seen a resurrection given the vampire obsession sweeping the world right now. The tune itself has a nice classical edge but is pretty slight.

Transport Tycoon Deluxe (Game Rip) - Road Hog I was expecting some rambunctious hillbilly rock with a title like that; unfortunately, the mellow elevator jazz that is delivered ain't much to write home about.

Good week overall. I think half these songs could probably clean up in the BSC, too.

The Point Spread
Deadly Premonition - 3 pts.
Marching Grass on the Hill - 2 pts.
Fittest - 1 pt.

Djinova Jun 9, 2010 05:28 AM

Why is SotW always so awesome when the BSC comes up?
3-Points // Marching Grass on the Hill - Waterfall
3-Points // oh well not possible make it 2 Points with 1 Pain Point added // Dreams of Cobalt
1-P00int // OutRun 20th Anniversary Box - STEP ON BEAT [Original]

Shice, I missed Weeh 213 for thinking it was already biweekly. Could a mind soul nice uploading me it?

Elorin Jun 10, 2010 01:48 PM

Thanks for clarifying, orion!

Some excellent standouts tracks this week.

(2 points) Fittest - Original Soundtrack - Dreams of Cobalt

(2 points) Marching Grass on the Hill - Waterfall

(1 point) Oboromuramasa Original Soundtrack - Tacit Understanding

(1 point) Advance Wars 2 - Black Hole Rising (Game Rip) - Battle Fanfare

KamikazePotato Jun 12, 2010 09:51 PM

Guess I didn't pick the best week to start voting in these things, huh?

Muzza Jun 12, 2010 11:07 PM

3 points: Marching Grass on the Hill - Waterfall
2 points: Advance Wars 2 - Black Hole Rising (Game Rip) - Battle Fanfare
1 point: Deadly Premonition (Game Rip) - Woods and Angels

Pretty meh week with only two good tracks for me. Over half of the tracks were bland and fairly forgettable, except that road hog track which has a melody that is absolutely terrible and now stuck in my head. If Waterfall doesn't get the gold this week I'll be shocked and disheartened.

THE POWER OF WATER Jun 13, 2010 04:22 AM

Just a reminder, this is the second week of the two-week period, so we'll actually be closing this week!

3 points: Marching Grass on the Hill - Waterfall
2 points: Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising (Game Rip) - Battle Fanfare
1 point: Transport Tycoon Deluxe (Game Rip) - Road Hog
don't let zircon know I'm not giving any points to: Fittest - Original Soundtrack - Dreams of Cobalt

I like Acoustic Asturias a lot, more because of the ensemble than the actual compositions I think. I enjoy pretty much all of their tunes, but a lot of them come off to me as, I'm not sure how best to put this, kind of schmaltzy? Drop dead gorgeous, of course, with very pretty melodies, but not really terribly interesting beyond that. That previous Asturias nom, Ryu-Hyo, suffers a little bit from that, but I like the buildup around the melody a lot.

Yoh Ohyama, the bandleader and composer/arranger, actually has a background in prog rock: Acoustic Asturias is a side project of his solo project, Asturias. (Ryu-Hyo from Birds Eye View is an arrangement of the track of the same name from the first Asturias album, Circle in the Forest.) Waterfall has always been my favorite Acoustic Asturias piece because it's the most overtly prog-influenced of their tunes, which is an odd sort of thing to say about chamber music, but then it's an odd sort of piece. Obviously the dance of the clarinet and violin is a highlight, but I find the rhythms to be an absolute joy.

I don't really think Woods and Angels going into SUPER UPLIFTING MODE at 1:15 was the right development choice, but I really digging the odd phrasing in the track up to that point.

Waterfall WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW

2 points: Battle Fanfare
2 points: Waterfall
1 point: Road Hog
1 point: Dreams of Cobalt
Just missed: STEP ON BEAT [Original], Foreboding Desert Temple, Woods and Angels
(wow this does look nicer with bold font)

I've recently been playing the Advance Wars games (all of them), and in doing so I've solved one of the 7 mysteries of the Intelligent Systems sound team. Taishi Senda, who is not Hirano, is responsible for the first game's soundtrack, which is mostly... not good. Even though Hirano took the helm for AW2 onwards, all the recurring characters retained their themes from the first game pretty much exact. So glad to know that Hirano isn't responsible for the themes in AWDS (and AW2) that I weren't fond of at all.

So yeah, there is some awesome music before DoR, a ton of it in fact. As an apology to Hirano, here's Battle Fanfare :)

Okay, this week. Yet another Fantastic week, as if we haven't had enough of them (don't stop)

Dreams of Cobalt reminds me very heavily of Red Faction 1&2 music, especially the synths and the way the drum loops are handled. Great tune.

Road Hog is real. Also it made me revisit Cruise Control from the same soundtrack nominated earlier in SOTw. loveeeeeeee

The trills in Foreboding Desert Temple were hilarious for some reason. Good tune, very nice melody, some decent fake jazzy piano work too.

Step on Beat had a ton of substance, and a funky bass line through all of it. Nice.

Woods and Angels developed real well. Melody was generic fantasy-genre fluff, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it. Cause I did, a whole lot.

Hey it's Tacit Understanding

(Gonna try to have more substantial posts for SOTW, after the BSC adrenaline rush. This promise will be broken next week)

EDIT: (This post looks nicer if you shrink the browser :()

orion_mk3 Jun 13, 2010 11:29 PM

3 Pts.} Fittest - Original Soundtrack - Dreams of Cobalt
- I liked the synths chosen. Especially the formant synth and synth strings. The flow of this is awesome to me, and I love the driving nature of it, the melody fits in really nicely on that piano part when it starts. A lot of the ostinati are pretty interesting rhythmically, and add to the drive. Just overall a pretty awesome track in my opinion.

2 Pts.} OutRun 20th Anniversary Box - STEP ON BEAT [Original]
- FM synth yay! I guess I just mostly like this melodically, in terms of sound chip, and rhythmically. I liked a lot of the unexpected places for hits. That and the cool synth loop through much of it that this starts off with were very neat sounding to me.

1 Pt.} Transport Tycoon Deluxe (Game Rip) - Road Hog
- Upbeat jazzy stuff is appealing to me here, and this works nicely. I like the solos, and the piano is a nice backing to them, plus the piano solo probably is my favorite part itself half way through this.

That must've been a long long while back, possibly '05 or before, which I have little to no knowledge of. It has not been seen anytime afterwards in any BSC, including preliminary rounds.
