Gunslinger Girl

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunslinger_girl http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/ency...me.php?id=2947 I just finished watching this, and I'll say this anime is pretty messed up. It's about training a bunch of girls into perfect killing machines. The thing is, they're all "innocent". You see these girls kill everyone, and you see them smiling so innocently. It really does give you the chills. This isn't one of your stereotypical "girls with guns and sex appeal". The action isn't the main point of this series, rather the development of character. Well more like discovering more of the characters. I thought this anime was very well made. The greatest aspect of this series I think is the way they handled the music. Everything goes very well in synch with each other. Each scene, each dialogue, each songs. |
I liked this series so much that it has the dubious distinction of being the source of my first avatar/sig. Also, when I took a trip to Japan, I made a point of wandering into a store and purchasing the soundtrack <3.
A pretty thoughtful series, really. Some parts were a bit forgettable, but others (like an early episode with Rico and the ending) were well-done drama. Nice animation and a great soundtrack makes this a winner. Ever read the manga? I've seen it in stores a few times but never really bothered to flip through it. |
I thought the ending was very well done. From my experience, most animes have pretty lame/retarded endings.
But I thought this one actually fit very well. Spoiler:

Gunslinger Girl is sitting at the top of my all-time favorite series list. What started as a "girls with guns" genre kicked those expectations in the guts once the producers began to explore the daily lives of the girls, both on missions and while they're at the Social Welfare Agency.
I think the factor that draws me to the series comes from watching the girls develop psychologically starting with their attachment to their handlers. As I watch the girls in action and at the Agency, I often find myself wondering about their thought process and how they reconcile being girls, but also killing machines. Even though the cybernetic enhancing technology shown in the series is far ahead of its time, the message is definitely relevant, especially in societies that employ children as soldiers (think African countries embroiled in civil war just as an example). As far as the ending goes, it's pretty depressing and gives us no indication as to what will happen in the future, so that area is blank. The manga does continue the story and I may pick that up in the future just to find out more. Still, the emotional rollercoaster ride that this series puts me though has not found a parallel, and the issues it brings up puts this series as my favorite. |
I watched this a few months ago. I enjoyed the episode with the one girl one was so obsessd she killed her trainer and herself. Overall there were definately some pretty touching moments but all in all I didnt enjoy myself half as much as I thought I would.
The girl who always seemed to be injured really made me kinda sad. |
I was very impressed by the story and music in this anime. Using young girls as assasins and what not. Also having a strong bond with their masters was interesting. I think the anime came out before the manga, right?

Oh my God. I don't think I can watch this anime with the same heart again... The Invislbe Children is a documentary where the exact process is done to train such children in Northern Uganda.. |

... I wouldn't go as far as saying exact same process, the chidren there are obviously treated way more worse, also minus the implants. ---- Anywho, I love this anime, it ranks way up there in my top 10 anime list. I originally watched it because of flashy guns, but then a really good story revealed itself and got me hooked. |
I haven't seen the series yet, but the soundtrack is one of my all-time favorite anime soundtracks, ever. Wonderfully done classical music with lots of strings and memorable melodies. I Especially like "Costruzione". What a happy little ditty! I'll bet something horrible is probably happening while it plays, though. :\

Good reasons all; testify, brethren!

I also remember that there're a trio of PS2 games floating around; pity they were never picked up for this side of the Pac. Now, if they were redone using a mix of engines and mechanics from kill.switch and Everything or Nothing... Hmmm... what could you get if you combine tech from kill.switch and GSG? Answer: the Agents and Zealots from Bullfrog Software's last great hurrah, Syndicate Wars. Heh, heh, heh... |

I just finished watching this series. It took me a while considering its short length, but it did get a bit depressing at times for me (especially with the sad music).
Creepy as hell though, since the DVD cover (I found this 2 disk imported DVD set) has Henrietta wearing a uniform which looks exactly as the ones my sister wears at her school. O_O Just found a wallpaper with that pic (without background). The series turned out surprisingly well-thought out and emotional - when the summary I'd gotten initially was basically "brainwashed assassin girls with guns". |
I liked this anime but not as much as everyone else seems to. Some of the girls seemed very interesting but didn't have much time spent on them. I wish they had spent more time on each character by making this a 26 episode series instead of 13.

I bought the first DVD along time ago and never really watched it until I read this thread. So I dug it out and decided I would actually watch it for once and damn i'm glad I did.
This is only coming from the fact I have only seen the first 4 Episodes, I am very much enjoying this series. The idea is a very neat one in my eyes and the story so far is awesome....plus as many of you have already put out there the music is great. I can't wait to get my hands on the rest of the series so I can catch up to you guys and actually have more to contribute about this series. |

I do believe that people who have read onwards are finding some of the other girls, most noticeably Petrushka to be pretty awesome. I don't know what the opinion is regarding Beatrice though. Guess that means I should crack open Volume 4. |
I've still yet to buy the dvd collection but its just as good if I have triad-fansubs version on me still ^^;.Well for those people other than me who are wondering about that sequel....
