Song of the Week - WEEK 211 Voting/WEEK 212 Nominating

Song of the Week. 200 Weeks and counting.
Week 211 Voting is open.
Week 212 Nominating is open.

THEME WEEK NOMINATION
There was a tie for second place in the theme week poll between "Famous Game, Obscure Name" and "Jap Bitch Can't Sing Weak," so I'm going to use executive privilege and choose the one I gave a vote to. We'll do the vocal week next time. So, everyone, get your nominations rolling for:

Famous Game, Obscure Name: Take well-known games (that wouldn't cut the mustard otherwise) and open them up with one caveat, that people nominate one of the most obscure tracks from the album.

As usual, we'll take eight nominations.

Oh, and I believe I have some music for you to vote on around here somewhere, let's see. Ah, found it:

THeme Week Nomination:

Title: Djose Temple
Composer: Nobuo Uematsu
Album: Final Fantasy X Original Soundtrack
Disc: 2 (of 4)
Track: 19 (of 23)
Cat. No: SSCX-10054~7
Year: 2001
Additional Info: Pretty sure this is the weirdest theme on the OST...at least I think so.

Muzza May 13, 2010 12:49 AM

ZiggyGo: I definitely think so too!

Famous Game, Obscure Name Nomination (#40)

Composer: Konami Kukeiha Club
Album: Genso Suikoden Original Game Soundtrack
Track Title: Theme of the Advancing Army
Track Number: 2-18
Year: 1996
Catalog Number: KICA-7696~7
Additional Information: This track is only played once in the game, and from my experience is one of the most unknown and underrated tracks on the soundtrack. I think it fits the theme week.

theme week, theme of the advancing army, get it

orion_mk3 May 13, 2010 10:04 AM

'bout time! Old Man CHz seems to have let his vacation go to his head :D

Seriously, though, I believe there's the little matter of the theme week to address:

Album: Halo 3 ODST
Composer: Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori
Track Title: Something Like Sorrow
Year: 2009
Justification: The song plays all of once in the game and is part of a suite on the OST, plus I didn't want to be lame and grab a JRPG as was my knee-jerk reaction.

TheKnightOfNee May 13, 2010 03:48 PM

quick nom for theme week

Super Castlevania 4
Secret Room
track something disc something composer someone there's no time to look I seriously gotta get out the door now
But it plays in secret rooms that most people will never come across playing the game, and thus will never hear.

Chuckster May 13, 2010 10:49 PM

I know I have a nomination this week, but this is my theme week brain child and I'm hoping to sneak one in.

Composer: Noriyuki Iwadare
Album: Grandia II - Dues
Track Title: Dangerous Zone
Track Number: 1-07
Year: 2000
Additional Information: It's an overlooked track as it is, but even more mystifying is that 2/3 of the way through the song completely shifts gears and includes a second track that plays separately in the game. For some reason, they are grouped together on the soundtrack.

Edit: Hey, some votes!

(3 points) an cinniùint - The Flaming Tree: Fine, nom bias, whatever. Admittedly not a whole heaping of substance but right in the wheelhouse of Mitsuda's ethereal chops. Very beautiful.

(2 points) Rudra no Hihou original sound version - Beyond the Rising Moon: Ah yes, this the Ryuji Sasai of Mystic Quest fame that I've come to know and love.

(1 point) The Sims 2: Open For Business (Game Rip) - The Sims 2 NewWave Theme: Frankly this was a toss-up. Sengoku and Blue Wolf were close.

Elorin May 13, 2010 11:36 PM

Here's a theme week nomination. Except for a few pieces, I think most tracks from FF11 are not well known, especially the tracks by Tanioka (but do correct if I'm wrong!). So hopefully this one fits the bill.

* Artist: Star Onions
* Composer: Kumi Tanioka

(2 points) Rudra no Hihou original sound version - Beyond the Rising Moon
(2 points) The Blue Wolf and the White Doe: The Secret History of the Mongols - Wolves on Horseback
(1 point) Puchi Carat ORIGINAL SOUND TRACKS - Bad Moon (Sapphire)
(1 point) The Sims 2: Open For Business (Game Rip) - The Sims 2 NewWave Theme

orion_mk3 May 16, 2010 12:19 PM

Guess a little voting is in order, eh?

an cinniùint - The Flaming Tree A Mitsuda nom is almost unfair, considering the level of quality in most of his output. This isn't in his top tier, though; really more of an atmospheric track than anything else.

KAROUS original soundtrack SPRING RAIN - death from above 4098 (Stage5) Unlistenable electonic garbage. Sorry, nominator, I just can't see any redeeming value in this one.

Puchi Carat ORIGINAL SOUND TRACKS - Bad Moon (Sapphire) Some nice synth work and a decent melody and beat here.

Rudra no Hihou original sound version - Beyond the Rising Moon Rudra is Ryuji Sasai's magnum opus, a perfect combination of melody and rock elements. I especially like the theme and variations approach--every main character has a theme, a badass boss battle theme, and a section of the ending theme (i.e. this).

Sengoku BASARA 2 Original Soundtrack - Yukimura Sanada's Theme Some odd FX here, but otherwise a decent rock track.

starmine - Harmony and Lovely -contemporary chamber mix- I wasn't quite sure what to expect from the "chamber mix" aside from chamber music, which is like Sominex to me. It seems to be a jazzy fusion-ish piece instead, though, with some interesting things going on (as well as a woman who really wants a can of Slice).

The Blue Wolf and the White Doe: The Secret History of the Mongols - Wolves on Horseback I don't know how well an ehru represents the Mongols, anthropologically speaking. I tend to dislike the sound of the instrument unless it's done just right, which isn't the case here.

The Sims 2: Open For Business (Game Rip) - The Sims 2 NewWave Theme Mark Mothersbaugh and his team are highly underrated as a VGM composer, as this nifty bit of synthpop proves.

Nice week. First and second were easy but third place was unnaturally tough.

The Point Spread
Beyond the Rising Moon - 3 pts.
NewWave Theme - 2 pts.
The Flaming Tree - 1 pt.

I guess it's time to start preparing for SotW's annual accommodation for the BSC (two-week voting periods, etc.) while we're at it.

Elorin May 16, 2010 12:39 PM

Nice week in general with a number of standouts.

(2 points) starmine - Harmony and Lovely -contemporary chamber mix-
A very smooth and slick number. Easily one of my favourites of the week. Makes me wish I have more time to find tracks like this.

(2 points) The Blue Wolf and the White Doe - The Secret History of the Mongols - Wolves on Horseback
Took a while to build up but the pay off is worth the wait. Nice one.

(1 point) The Sims 2 - Open For Business (Game Rip) - The Sims 2 NewWave Theme
I was, for some reason, reminded of music from the Lemmings at some point. I think it has to do with the instrumentation and its bouncy style.

(1 point) an cinniuint - The Flaming Tree
Unassuming and contemplative. In short, I like it.

Just missed: Rudra no Hihou (Good old school vibes there but I did wish it could have been much more at several points.)

Lolman May 16, 2010 04:35 PM

(3 points) Rudra no Hihou original sound version - Beyond the Rising Moon
(2 points) The Sims 2: Open For Business (Game Rip) - The Sims 2 NewWave Theme
(1 point) The Blue Wolf and the White Doe: The Secret History of the Mongols - Wolves on Horseback

ZiggyGo May 16, 2010 08:00 PM

3 points: death from above 4098*
2 points: The Flaming Tree
1 point: Beyond the Rising Moon

*props to the nominator for nominating my favorite theme from KAROUS!

TheKnightOfNee May 17, 2010 01:57 AM

Jesus, this is another really good week. Something's getting snubbed on points here.

2 points - KAROUS original soundtrack SPRING RAIN - death from above 4098 (Stage5)
2 points - starmine - Harmony and Lovely -contemporary chamber mix-
1 point - Puchi Carat ORIGINAL SOUND TRACKS - Bad Moon (Sapphire)
1 point - The Blue Wolf and the White Doe: The Secret History of the Mongols - Wolves on Horseback

Holy crap that stage 5 theme, even better than my nom. Most other weeks that thing would be taking a good three points with it.

Darkcomet72 May 17, 2010 02:01 AM

2 points: death from above 4098 (Stage 5)
2 point: The Flaming Tree
1 point: Bad Moon (Sapphire)
1 point: Harmony and Lovely
Just Missed: Yukimura Sanada's theme, The Sims 2 NewWave Theme, Wolves on Horseback, the first 6 seconds of the Ryuji Sasai track

The weeks have been really good as of late, wonder what's up.

To be honest, I'm mostly unfamiliar with Mitsuda and his works outside of CT, Gun Hazard and Sailing to the World. These last 2 noms by him have been super good, especially compared to some of the stuff by him I've only heard in previous BSCs.

IT IS 3:00 AM

Muzza May 17, 2010 02:42 AM

When I hear a tsugunai piece I can't help but compare it to "Happiness", one of my favourite Mitsuda compositions ever. an cinniùint - The Flaming Tree is pleasant, but is lacking in distinctive character and atmosphere.

I remember liking the other KAROUS track that was nominated a couple of years ago (I think I liked it, I do remember it so that's more I can say about most past tracks), and KAROUS original soundtrack SPRING RAIN - death from above 4098 (Stage5) is also fine. Really liking the drum work.

Puchi Carat has a wonderful soundtrack. <3 Puchi Carat ORIGINAL SOUND TRACKS - Bad Moon (Sapphire) is admittedly one of my least favourite tracks from it, but it's still decent fun. The synth lead is more jarring than catchy, but at least the jazzy backing is good.

Ryuji Sasai is pretty much the greatest VGM composer musician ever, and is cooler than any normal person. Rudra no Hihou original sound version - Beyond the Rising Moon nicely captures his spirit and energy; I enjoy it while it lasts of course though I can't say much about it afterwards. Fleeting, but the best kind of fleeting.

Sengoku BASARA 2 Original Soundtrack - Yukimura Sanada's Theme is painfully generic. I mean, damn.

starmine - Harmony and Lovely -contemporary chamber mix- really sounds like some of Kikuta's h-game work in places (that running keyboard). It's fairly nondescript save a few nice flourishes (2:40 is very nice).

The Blue Wolf and the White Doe: The Secret History of the Mongols - Wolves on Horseback is particularly good. What starts as a moving call into the wilderness gradually transforms into something more elegant and human. The piano adds an excellent touch.

I'm a sucker for Mothersbaugh and his main theme for The Sims 2. The Sims 2: Open For Business (Game Rip) - The Sims 2 NewWave Theme is arguably my favourite arrangement, having a wonderfully produced new age feel while retaining some tasteful pop sensibilities. The section from 1:34 to 1:52 hooks me every time!

POINTs abound; POINTs flourish

3 points: The Sims 2: Open For Business (Game Rip) - The Sims 2 NewWave Theme
2 points: The Blue Wolf and the White Doe: The Secret History of the Mongols - Wolves on Horseback
1 point: KAROUS original soundtrack SPRING RAIN - death from above 4098 (Stage5)
I Can't Believe It's Not Point!: Rudra no Hihou original sound version - Beyond the Rising Moon
5th: starmine - Harmony and Lovely -contemporary chamber mix-
6th: an cinniùint - The Flaming Tree
7th: Puchi Carat ORIGINAL SOUND TRACKS - Bad Moon (Sapphire)
seriously, what: Sengoku BASARA 2 Original Soundtrack - Yukimura Sanada's Theme

Very solid week. I'm sensing another tight end result!

Regular nom:

Album: Nervous Brickdown (DS rip)
Artist: Xavier Thiry, Sylvain Hellio, Mathieu Stempell
Track Title: Paper (Stage)
Year: 2007
Info: The 2SF file has a fade out at the end which would make looping properly impossible, so I think I'm gonna use the one I ripped myself and loop it.

3 Pts.} Puchi Carat ORIGINAL SOUND TRACKS - Bad Moon (Sapphire)
- It may be nomination bias, but this was my favorite here today anyways. I particularly enjoy the synth chords, and the sudden change to the section in minor that still retained the upbeat feel at the same time. A really awesome jazzy feel. I also like the bassline in that section. This used to be my favorite video game track for a while if I were to exclude the many FM synth chiptunes that tend to dominate my favorites.

2 Pts.} starmine - Harmony and Lovely -contemporary chamber mix-
-I kind of feel guilty having these two at the top, since the two I was familiar with already are the ones I'm giving the most points, but I really love this track. The piano at the introduction with the ride cymbal pattern and bongo accompanying I think is awesome. The rhythm of strings quickly moving down in large intervals at the beginning section is pretty nice sounding in my opinion. Once this gets in to the main calmer synthy electronic groove that later gets other layers over it, it feels really nice. The delay echoes fading out and fast piano are really enjoyable to me throughout.

1 Pt.} KAROUS original soundtrack SPRING RAIN - death from above 4098 (Stage5)
- This is rhythmically pretty interesting. I also really enjoy the percussion and delay echo synths not syncing to each other. This really gets the most enjoyable to me though when all of that becomes juxtaposed with the panning synth pad on the nice chord.

THE POWER OF WATER May 18, 2010 05:47 AM

We have seven theme week noms, so we can't start that up next week, but we also only have seven regular noms (counting the above post). Anyone want to throw in a plain ol' ordinary nom to prevent a six-track batch?

Darkcomet72 May 18, 2010 10:38 AM

Here is a regular nom:

Gamerip: Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising
Composer: Yoshito Hirano
Track: Battle Fanfare
Track #: 46 on BHHQ rip
Catalog #: n/a
Year: 2003
Sources: Black Hole HQ - Advance Wars 2 Soundtrack , Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising for Game Boy Advance - MobyGames
Additional Info: Track also goes by the title "Victory Fanfare". Taishi Senda is also credited, but he only did the tunes that were ported from the first game (most of the character themes, a few others). Will upload shortly.

Also I have a potential nom for the Famous Game Obscure Name week: the regular boss theme (Koopa Junior) from Super Mario World, but I fear it's still too popular for this contest. What do you all think?

TheKnightOfNee May 18, 2010 11:08 AM

I think this might bump Darkcomet, which I don't mean to do, but I also found a regular week nom and want to post it before I forget it exists. (which sometimes happens)
