Icelandic volcano - Hope you've got no flights planned

So a volcano has erupted in Iceland and grounded most flights across Northern Europe.

I'm not flying anywhere so it doesn't really affect me but I'd be concerned that if there's enough crap in the air to bring down a plane, it has to fall to earth somewhere, right? I might not bother washing my car any time soon.

Anyone got any good volcano stories?

"We have two heavy floods coming out from the melting of the Eyjafjallajokull glacier," said police spokesman Roegnvaldur Olafsson.

The eruption in a remote area about 125km east of Reykjavik was bigger than the blast at the nearby Fimmvorduhals volcano last month.

"It is very variable how long these eruptions last. Anywhere from a few days to over a year," said Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson, a professor of geophysics and civil protection adviser in Iceland.

"Judging from the intensity of this one, it could last a long time," he added.
Ignoring how hilarious those Icelandic names look this may not be the last air travel disruption due to ash. Britain will continue to be inconvenienced as Iceland explodes and floods.

I'm nowhere near any volcanoes, but I used to hear about the Mt. St. Helens eruption all the time when I was younger. This was the eruption teachers and such always showed pictures of when volcanoes came up mostly because of how devastating it was and the fact that it's still active.

Sometime in the 90s, during one of Etna's eruptions I was flying somewhere on holiday and we passed over Sicily at night. That was when I saw it - Lava!

I hope my life won't be affected by this. I have a flight planned in the beginning of May.
