Spring has not been kind. Sinus infection/cold left me bedridden since Thursday of last week, so I missed last week :(.

Last Resort (Game Rip) - Don't Touch Me Baby [STAGE 5-1] Started out a little mundane, but the synth melody that eventually kicks in is pretty nice.
Merregnon Soundtrack Volume 2 - Forgotten Memories Dark, troubled, and rather filmic--like the scene in the James Bond movie when the girl gets shot and dies in his arms. It's got an attractive sound but the melody is a little diffuse, which will probably cost it points among regular voters. Monster Maker - (Bonus) BGM Selection I wouldn't have thought "orchestral overture" for something called "Monster Maker," but here we are. The music is nice, but the suite structure works against it--as soon as one of the pieces begins to make an impact, we're off to the next one. It's also ungodly long (almost 12 minutes!), to the point that it might even be eligible for "Epic Proportions" when it comes to that. Mouryou Senki Madara 2 Sound Fantasia - Lily of the Valley (Isolated Village in the Valley BGM) Very pastoral, with a really lovely part for clarinet/oboe. Very relaxing and soothing. RIZ-ZOAWD Original Soundtrack - Sandy Beach of Star Fragments I like the new age atmosphere of this one, which blends nicely into a selection "beach sounds" and a strong melody. Though of course I am biased a little. SQUARE ENIX MUSIC Presents Music for Art - Flying Universe I've been meaning to sample Music for Art to see if it's worth picking up, but a lot of the names in the credits turn me off (damn you, Ishimoto!). Mitsuto Suzuki is a total unknown to me, though, probably because most of his work has been as an arranger. That skillset sort of shines through here; the music is very ambient and well put together but doesn't have too much substance. The Sword of Xuan Yuan Side Story - The Clouds Faraway Game Original Soundtrack - Tears Running Madly (Battle Theme) Does the Sword of Xuan Yuan even have a main story? The music is what I've come to expect from the series: competent, with a definite Eastern flair, but not especially memorable. Trine Original Soundtrack - Dragon Graveyard Trine was on my own radar for a nomination, so it's good to see it here. A nice blend of renaissance instruments into a more contemporary package. Interesting week. Everything had some merits, so point allocation was très tough. The Point Spread Sandy Beach - 3 pts. Dragon Graveyard - 2 pts. Forgotten Memoreis - 1 pt. Nom to come. |
Last Resort (Game Rip) - Don't Touch Me Baby [STAGE 5-1] is a bit bland; not my kind of music all in all. Percussion is alright but desperately needs some melody to back it up.
Merregnon Soundtrack Volume 2 - Forgotten Memories is an OK moody piece, but the atmosphere isn't emotional or distinctive enough to really allure me. It's well produced but I won't be in a hurry to revisit it. Getting over the hilarious fact that the BGM selection screen in a Monster Maker game has such grand, epic orchestral music, Monster Maker - (Bonus) BGM Selection is pretty good really. Of course it didn't have my attention all the way through, but there are some variations in melody and style throughout, so it's surprisingly decent in the end for an 11 minute orchestral tune. Mouryou Senki Madara 2 Sound Fantasia - Lily of the Valley (Isolated Village in the Valley BGM) is very pretty, very pastoral. It's got a whimsical charm to it that's wonderfully captured by the oboe. All the accompaniment is good as well. I've liked every track I've heard from Mouryou Senki Madara, I should really check the soundtrack (and its arrange album) out in its entirety. I just flat out don't like the score to Riz-Zoawd. Everything's a bit jumbled and none of the melody's are anything special to me. RIZ-ZOAWD Original Soundtrack - Sandy Beach of Star Fragments has some agreeable Opoona elements, but there's nothing at all to grab onto. Through one ear and out the other, pretty much! boring Sakimoto is boring SQUARE ENIX MUSIC Presents Music for Art - Flying Universe is a beautiful piece of ambient techno, IDM, whatever you want to call it, from Mitsuto Suzuki. It's my favourite composition of his, with an airy tone combining with a more bubbly and innocuous melody. And that soft percussion at 5:00, sweet. When is Mitsuto Suzuki gonna score his first game (he'd be perfect for something like Opoona 2). The Sword of Xuan Yuan Side Story - The Clouds Faraway Game Original Soundtrack - Tears Running Madly (Battle Theme) is an enjoyable and dynamic Asian action tune. Nothing much else to say (no real highs or lows), but it's particularly solid, this one. The harpsichord in Trine Original Soundtrack - Dragon Graveyard is really annoying, and it all sounds a bit cliched. It generates a nice atmosphere though, which is admittedly made better by the cliche choral and instrumental touches. what's the POINT of a dull sakimoto tune, i just don't-- 3 points: SQUARE ENIX MUSIC Presents Music for Art - Flying Universe 2 points: Mouryou Senki Madara 2 Sound Fantasia - Lily of the Valley (Isolated Village in the Valley BGM) 1 point: The Sword of Xuan Yuan Side Story - The Clouds Faraway Game Original Soundtrack - Tears Running Madly (Battle Theme) 4th: Monster Maker - (Bonus) BGM Selection 5th: Trine Original Soundtrack - Dragon Graveyard 6th: Merregnon Soundtrack Volume 2 - Forgotten Memories 7th: RIZ-ZOAWD Original Soundtrack - Sandy Beach of Star Fragments 8th: Last Resort (Game Rip) - Don't Touch Me Baby [STAGE 5-1] Nice week. Appropriate variation of ups and downs, with a couple of neat discoveries. |
Not going to lie -- not a big fan of this week.
(3 points) SQUARE ENIX MUSIC Presents Music for Art - Flying Universe: You guys hit it on the head. Subtle techno elements, nice ambient atmosphere. It doesn't hit you over the head with anything but it makes for a relatively lovely, if fleeting, whole. (2 points) The Sword of Xuan Yuan Side Story - The Clouds Faraway Game Original Soundtrack - Tears Running Madly (Battle Theme): About what I expected. It's hard to hold it against this track when so many other songs hit the actioney Asian theme so competently. (1 point) Last Resort (Game Rip) - Don't Touch Me Baby [STAGE 5-1]: It's got some nice elements. Odd name for an action side scrolling background theme. |

Fascinating week. Also, fantastic week, seriously wow, every tune here is great. I had some massive difficulties assigning points here. The first 30 seconds of Tears Running Madly were gold, and the orchestration is tops all around, but god that pop melody prevented it from getting points. Don't ask me why I didn't give Flying Universe any points I don't even know The Monster Maker medley was very well done, though some of the endings were pretty abrupt. The 3rd, 5th, and especially the beginning of the last tune were so good I can't complain, though. Of course I have to give some love to Don't Touch Me Baby, it was a potential nom of mine. The arranged track for the Neo Geo CD version is also pretty good, check it out. :thumbsup: |
