Scary books!
 

what a lame thread title ;___;

Anyway, I remember seeing a thread like this a while ago, but it was months ago and the crash erased it so I figured I might as well make a new one.

Basically, I'm looking for a scary book to read, so I'd like a few suggestions. Consider this just a place to talk about your favorite scary books and such. Whatever.

Personally, I guess the scariest book I've ever read was The Shining by Stephen King. It got me pretty excited at some points, and a little on edge at others. I'm not sure if I've actually been scared by a book (or a movie, for that matter), but I'm sure the Shining is the closest I've ever gotten. I guess I should check out some more King stuff, I haven't read much, so some suggestions there would be helpful.

I've read a good amount of Poe and Lovecraft, as well. Neither of them scare me in the least, but I love reading them just for their unique style, and since I live in New England I guess there's sort of a connection there. It helps with the imagery, I guess >_>

I remember Sass (?) reccomending The Amityville Horror. I read it and I was very dissapointed. Usually I get pretty engrosed with "true" horror stories written in the vain of a documentry (pretty niche, I guess >_>), but this was pretty boring to me. I've been scared more by random "true" ghost stories I've read on the net (for no apparent reason this one made me nervous ;___;).

I'm also about 2/3 done with House of Leaves (Mark Z. Danielewski). Apparently it's considered a pretty good horror book, but I really haven't read anything scary yet. Perhaps mildy unsettling, but ultimatley it's pretty mundane. However, I still reccomend it to anyone literate simply because it's so unique-- it's like nothing I've ever read before or even heard of, and I suggest everyone give it a try.

So what was my point...? Er, yeah, scary books GO.

I read quite a bit, and the most frightening book I can remember reading is "The Book Of Three" by Lloyd Alexander, which I read when I was eight. Thinking back, I believe there was some kind of living-dead situation. I'm pretty desensitized to horror related media, be it movies or books, because no matter how well the book is written, in the back of my mind a voice is always saying 'that's ridiculous'.

aparently the new stephen king book Cellular is quite good and scary. I think I'll buy it. I never really read scary book, well when I was young I did read some "frisson" I'm not sure if this collection was translate in english (or if the french version is the translation...) those I quite fun, but it's more suspence than scary...

Try "Fevre Dream" by George R.R. Martin. While I didn't find it very scary, I did think it was a very well written horror book. It is a rather original vampire story that takes place on a Mississppi sidwheeler boat during the 1850s. Check it out.
