That version of The Super Surfers suffers from clicks; here's a clean version. Sorry I didn't provide it initially; I'm at school and I don't have an FTP program set up on my laptop.

It's how it sounds on a real NES. Makes me wonder about the pros and cons of authentic vs. emulated audio.

orion_mk3 Mar 2, 2010 05:07 PM

I've uploaded Drakken's preferred version to the FTP, though only CHz has the authority to move it into the voting folder. As for which version we should use, my instinct says to go with what the nominator wants.

On another note, here are the theme week proposals we have so far. Let's get to choosin'!

Famous Game, Obscure Name: Take well-known games (that wouldn't cut the mustard otherwise) and open them up with one caveat, that people nominate one of the most obscure tracks from the album.

March of the Intros: Intro/main menu themes can be important for setting the mood of a game, regardless of genre. And they tend to be very short affairs, with some exceptions, so such a week could be an extended 60s week of sorts.

Whimsical Wonderland Week: With Alice in Wonderland hitting screens next week, perhaps we could do a whimsical week with numbers like slapstick songs and tunes that don't take themselves too seriously.

SyFyLis Channel Original Musics: Nominate your most out of this world game tracks with a sci-fi connection. Maybe tie-in with some major sci-fi game/TV series/movie launch.

Epic Proportions: Minimum song length of somewhere between 7-10 minutes, unlooped. And no maximum.

SotW Unplugged: An acoustic (or faux-acoustic) instrumentation week.

Instrument Discussion International of the Season (IDIotS): A week built around a specific instrument, like violin or piano.

Jap Bitch Can't Sing Weak: VGM with vocals, whether good, bad or plain ugly.

The Anti-Battle: Take the eight lowest scoring tracks in SotW history; Vote on Worst of the Worst with negative points given out.

.38 Doujin Special: Temporarily remove the rule against doujin (fanmade remixes) for a week of OCR-inspired madness.

I'm inclined to agree. I've updated the voting with the emulated version of the piece, and I put the game recording in the extras directory for people who are interested in that. I'm kind of partial to hardware idiosyncracies, personally.

Also, thanks so much for compiling those theme week suggestions. Saves me some work, and I'm always a big fan of me not having to do things.

I don't really know how you guys want to handle choosing, but we don't have to be super formal about it. How about we all just pick our top three choices? I'll go first:
  1. Whimsical Wonderland Week
  2. Epic Proportions
  3. Famous Game, Obscure Name

It also appears that I am due for a Nomination, so since this post isn't long enough already:

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Mar 2, 2010 10:17 PM

I suppose I'm due for a nomination again.

Album: Vent ~ Grandia Arrange Version
Composer: Noriyuki Iwadare
Track Title: For the Love of You
Track Number: 2
Year: 1998
Catalog Number: KICA-5004

A slightly different sort of SotW nomination.

As for theme week formats:

1: Famous Game, Obscure Name
2: Instrument of the Week
3: Whimsical Wonderland

Of course, I'd be up for breaking the rules for just one week with a Doujin Special. The whole Best Doujin Contest went over well, but it was never an official extension of SotW. We COULD try it here once just as a nice sorbet, to cleanse the palate of all the other stuff we've heard.

Rimo Mar 3, 2010 10:39 AM

(3 points) Winter Gold (Game Rip) - Medals
(1 point) Shinsekai Kivandelyan - Batsu Monster's Carnival
(1 point) Silver Surfer (NSF Rip) - The Super Surfers (High Scores)
(1 point) Technosoft GAME MUSIC COLLECTION VOL.5 ~ Thunder Force IV - Stand Up Against Myself - Staff Roll Arrange

Great selection this week. Silver Surfer and TFIV might have received more points if I would have perceived them as being more obscure.

Here are my preferences for the theme weeks, even though I would appreciate any of the submitted ideas:

1 - Jap Bitch Can't Sing Weak
2 - Instrument Discussion International of the Week (IDIotS) -> Saxophone
3 - Epic Proportions

And, nomination:

Artist: Bart Roijmans
Album: SAV
Track Title: Glooming
Year: 2008
Notes: This is an original composition by a game composer. It was however later adapted for use in the DS version of Aliens in the Attic.

Even steveny week...
2 points - Shinsekai Kivandelyan - Batsu Monster's Carnival
2 points - Sonic Riders Shooting Star Story Original Soundtrack 'Zero Gravity Tracks' - Blast Town
2 points - Technosoft GAME MUSIC COLLECTION VOL.5 ~ Thunder Force IV - Stand Up Against Myself - Staff Roll Arrange

Week formats:
1: March of the Intros
2: Jap Bitch Can't Sing Weak
3: Instrument Discussion International of the Week (IDIotS)

New nomination!
Game: Queen's Blade Spiral Chaos (PSP Rip)
Composer: Banpresto
Track Title: 戦場に咲く華
Track Number: 11
Year: 2009

Ed Bellis Mar 4, 2010 11:36 AM

Nom time:
Artist: Masashi Kageyama
Game: Mr. Gimmick! (Game Rip)
Song: Strange Memories of Death (Unused)
Track Number: 19

Track was unused but is apparently in the sound test.

Weekly rankings:
3 points: The Super Surfers
2 points: Stand up against Myself
1 point: Medals

orion_mk3 Mar 4, 2010 04:41 PM

Blaze and Blade ~Eternal Quest~ ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK - Mine Cart Sounds like Uematsu's "Devil's Lab" on acid, which is not entirely a bad thing though I can't see myself listening to it too often.

Flyff (Game Rip) - Theme 5 - Playground Pure kooky fun. SoundTEMP can be tiresome at times, but few peeps do exuberent or kooky as well. The faux sax on this one gets me every time.

Million KNights Vermilion Original Soundtrack - Cheerful Party I thought that was a typo but apparently they're not knights by KNights, which brings a certain herpetological comedy troupe to mind. The song itself is a pretty standard rock tune, without much flair aside from a rather misleading pening and loop.

Shinsekai Kivandelyan - Batsu Monster's Carnival The word "carnival" creates certain expectations, which aren't really fulfilled here. Instead, there's bizarre off-kilter jazz and whispers that sound right out of a porno (and, for all I know about this game, they are!).

Silver Surfer (NSF Rip) - The Super Surfers (High Scores) I'm an apostate of the Church of the Brothers Follin, generally neutral or negative on most of their stuff, which I know puts me pretty far outside of the VGM mainstream. This is one of the better tracks I've heard from them, with a genuinely catchy level of funk and some of the more annoying (to me) tendencies reined in.

Sonic Riders Shooting Star Story Original Soundtrack 'Zero Gravity Tracks' - Blast Town Decent jazzy stuff, but not a whole lot of meat.

Technosoft GAME MUSIC COLLECTION VOL.5 ~ Thunder Force IV - Stand Up Against Myself - Staff Roll Arrange Your basic synth rock song. It's got more flair than Cheerful Party, but not a whole lot that moved me.

Winter Gold (Game Rip) - Medals Doesn't sound like any Olympic fanfare I've ever heard, but has its moments.

The Point Spread
Playground - 3 pts.
Super Surfers - 2 pts.
Mine Cart - 1 pt.

And, as if this post wasn't gargantuan enough...
Special Week Preferences
1. Instrument Discussion International of the Season (IDIotS) (specifically, a piano week)
2. Epic Proportions (no ideas for noms yet, but would like to see what people come up with)
3. Jap Bitch Can't Sing Weak (I have a great song for this from YDKJ4).

ZiggyGo Mar 4, 2010 04:47 PM

I'll be voting later, but as for theme weeks:

No special preference order:

Instrumentation Discussion International of the Season (Piano)
Jap Bitch Can't Sing Weak
Epic Proportions

Elorin Mar 5, 2010 12:33 AM

Preferences for theme weeks in no particular order:

- Instrument Discussion International of the Season (IDIotS): Agree with piano week but other instruments are fine, too, like strings.
- Whimsical Wonderland Week
- Famous Game, Obscure Name

No problems with other themed week ideas, too. Actual week voting soon!

Kaleb.G Mar 6, 2010 09:44 PM

May vote this week, or not. But here's a nom:

* Track #: 12 (of 42)
* Track Title: Frozen Frequency

How is it we have a track from Thunder Force IV that isn't Space Walk?

The World's Worst Guitar Synth splitting into two pieces is the pinnacle of all recorded music. I salute you, Ken Kojima, you magnificent bastard.

Nomination

Additional Information: I'd bet all my money that this track was composed by Toshiya Yamanaka (no luck with composer breakdown for this album). It's got his trademark guitar style.

I can't believe there was a point in my life where I didn't like Jeroen Tel.

Also wow, this Shinsekai Kivamvpfsljng tune is so awesome and the main reason Blast Town isn't getting 3 points.

Good week.
