Robotic Parts
 

With more and more companies and scientists figuring out ways to replicate human functions into synthetic parts, whether it be prosthetic arms that can hook in with nerve endings to computers controlled with your brain, it's only a matter of time before we start seeing some of those technologies coming our way.

That said, the ethics involved aren't really at stake here, thus the reason for being in general discussion. Instead, I'm more interested in the cool and hypothetically good aspects for the sake of science fiction fun. And since I've been reading Neuromancer lately, it kind of popped up in my head.

The morality of replacing parts of your body with robotic pieces aside, if you could swap out one of your fleshy components for a better, more efficient replacement, what would it be? What wouldn't you replace if the technology were available?

Even something simple like your teeth and jaw. No more cavities, cleaning, broken jaws, or chipped teeth. Or robotic eyes that could zoom, have readouts and process light more efficiently. Possibilities are endless, and slightly terrifying.

I'm pretty much looking forward to a complete, Robo-cop style, cyborg refit. There are that many parts of me that have suffered a bit of wear and tear over the years, the sooner I can replace them with an adamantium exoskeleton the better frankly.

Just yesterday I posted this article on Facebook which I originally read in this month's National Geographic. Having said that, I probably wouldn't replace anything unless it absolutely needed replacement but I'll be damned if a lot of the shit they're building to enhance people's lives with bionic attachments isn't fucking amazing.

I wouldn't mind a new sniffer, personally. But only as long as it has an off switch. I kind of enjoy not being able to smell my own shit.

I kind of doubt that tech will come around in this generation, but it's nice to think about.

That's the thing, I wonder if any of these awesome bionic limbs would be built in with limits to how awesome they could be? They probably wouldn't allow a race of superheroes going around and punching through walls. But then they just need to make a wall that can regenerate itself and bam, you have awesome entrances to everything. Haven't they already banned runners with prosthetic limbs from running in the Olympics since their prosthetic leg is more efficient than their fleshy counterparts?

I've always been slightly entranced by the idea of the bionic eye. Switch on night vision or infrared for NO reason whatsoever other than to be awesome.

wow this is a tough question. my profession is finance and i deal numbers from morning to night. i think a great time save would be if part of my brain can somehow be connected to an electronic calculator that can do on-the-spot calculations.

not just simple adding and multiplying but a brain-calculator that can also conduct complex algorithms that take into account multiple economic indicators at the same time.

or even a foreign exchange market addon so that i can convert to and from currencies in the blink of an eye and using the latest exchange rates.

Isn't that what computers and actual calculators already do though? Doing those calculations in the blink of an eye is already possible is it not?

Not to mention they'd probably fire everybody but one guy, because that's all they need to perform the job. Say hello to unemployment.

I think he means being able, say, look at a price in Yen on ebay.jp and then instantly knowing how much that is in every other currency.

My fantasies nowadays generally revolve around data capture and playback. Unfortunately, I think that'd requie a revolution in data storage capabilities. I'm talking video/audio feeds right now, although recording and playback of tactile experience would also be rather incredible.

Essentially the ability to immerse oneself in an old experience but within a different emotional context.

I'd quite like robotic skin also.

I like the robots and the concept ideas of robos since childhood. Actually I have decided to make robo who have great eyes like zoom lance camera. Lots of utilities done by the robo. But the project was stopped in between but still I like to talk on that matter very much.
