Wii Drivekey?

Hey everybody - haven't posted here in quite a while.

My girlfriend just got me a Wii for Christmas. I was looking into modding the thing, but don't really know where to find the best source of information. I remembered getting quite a bit of help from here before when I modded my PS2, so I figured maybe somebody here will be able to at least point me in the right direction.

From the little research I've done, it seems that most people are all about the Wii Drivekey, as it doesn't require any soldering and supports all Wii systems. Anybody have any experience with those, or recommendations on what to get?

Why would you hardmod a Wii when softmodding is so much easier? =/

...because I didn't know you could!

But I am going to certainly look into it now. Thanks.

Yes! Do that. You will be surprised at how much you can do.

I assume there is nothing wrong with linking to WiiBrew ?

FatsDomino Dec 27, 2009 06:07 PM

Nope, feel free to even make a guide if you want to.

Considering that the best guide ever went down along with Yafaze, it might be nice if someone felt like recreating that for forum use. It wasn't the guide that got Yafaze taken down, incidentally. It was the zero-day warez.

Hey, that Homebrew Channel looks pretty amazing. I'm pretty interested in running my game library through a network, as I'm currently building a 3TB NAS with WHS loaded on it. It would be great to have everything centralized that way. I've found a little information on how to do that, but I'll have to look a little more.

Are there any must have homebrew apps that I should know of after loading the channel?

Hmmm... I honestly recommend just getting an external 200 to 500 GB hard drive and hooking that up to the back of your Wii and running your games off of that. It's what I do and it's damn fast. I'm not too confident it'll be all that good running off of a NAS.

Hmm... I had no luck getting games to run from a hard drive. Had to settle for a 16GB flash drive. Even that is acceptable, because it holds more games than I'm likely to play at any one time...

I wasn't able to get game to load from ANYTHING except DVD-R. That's MINUS-Rs only. I have a USB-powered external [320GB] drive that I'd totally use for running games off of, but I have no idea how. I had no idea you could, even. D:

In theory, it is easy. There's a homebrew app that serves as the loader, and a Windows app that specially formats a partition on your hard drive and transfers games to it. In practice, it can be picky about drives.

Hmm, I'll have to look into that. Any idea if you can load GCN games the same way?

As far as I know, you can't. :(

How awesome that would be...

FatsDomino Dec 28, 2009 09:54 PM

Yeah, I'd fucking love it if it could do GameCube games. For those wondering about the harddrive thing I've had great success using Western Digital portable hard drives.

Sousuke Dec 29, 2009 03:40 AM

I've been able to run Gamecube games from burned DVD-Rs, but that's about it. I haven't figured out how to properly make multiboot ones either, so as not to waste discs and stick multiple games on one disc. I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually though.
