Best sports championship rounds of the decade
World Series - 2002, Angels/Giants. Just because of the dramatic comeback, the greatest player ever being involved, and it all being against the pleasant backdrop of California.
Runner-up - 2001, Diamondbacks/Yankees. The series was good in its own right, but also because this was the year the whole country supposedly rooted for the Yankees to win. Worst - 2008, Phillies-Rays. Bad weather, bad baseball. Of course since I wasn't interested I didn't watch much, so blast me if you must. Super Bowl - 2008, Giants/Patriots. Best game I ever watched at 7 am. Runner-up - 2009, Steelers/Cardinals. Some might have put a SB from earlier in the decade here, but this one captivated me. Maybe because it was an unlikely juggernaut vs. doormat franchise matchup that actually worked. Worst - 2003, Buccaneers/Raiders. Gruden! Stanley Cup Finals - 2003, Devils/Mighty Ducks. Giguere as the MVP, and the good games in Anaheim did it, despite the 3-0 games. Runner-up - 2006, Hurricanes/Oilers. I really didn't watch a lot of the other series, so I have to put this one, though this year's came close. Worst - 2002, Red Wings/Hurricanes. Eh. I was going to do NBA, but I just can't. I can't even think of any Finals that I really loved. |

The greatest World Series in my lifetime would have to be the 1991 series between Atlanta and Minnesota. This seven game series featured three extra innings games, and five games decided by one run. Arguably the greatest Game 7 ever? Yeah, it's got that too. Smoltz shuts the Twins out for 9 innings, Jack Morris shuts the Braves out for 10. The series was decided in the bottom of the 10th inning of game 7. It's tough to get any more epic than this series. |
