Making a christmas gift help how they did this.
 

I was about to buy one of these, but it cost wayy too much so I decided to try to make it. Any idea on how they attached the tree to the wood base? Or what do you think is the best way?

They probably drilled a 1/4" or so hole into the tree and board and used a wooden dowel and some glue to join the two together. That would probably be the cleanest way to go, but I guess you could probably just glue the tree to the board and run a screw or two up from the bottom as well.
