Remedies for Razor Bumps

I'm wondering if any of you have any effective ways of getting rid of razor bumps. They've been getting out of control for me recently.

Mucknuggle Apr 9, 2006 05:48 PM

Switch to an electric razor. This is the only solution that I know of.

What kind of shaving cream do you use? Do you shave against the grain?

Actually, to start off with, you're a guy and we're talking about shaving your face, right? Just clarifying.

Yes, yes, I'm a guy. I use a simple Gillette shaving cream. I do shave against the grain, and I know that if I want to prevent razor bumbs, I should shave with it but I want a close shave.

Be sure to change your blade regularly. It can get pretty nasty otherwise. Also, use a lot of shaving gel, and keep reapplying it as you go. Works for me.

Mucknuggle Apr 9, 2006 05:59 PM

What kind of razor do you use? I find that the only place I get razor bumps is below my ear, just below the jawline. And I use sensitive skin Gillette shaving gel - apparently it doesn't work.

I use an old Mach 3 Turbo, and I've rarely had problems. Like Capo said, just use lots of shaving gel (I prefer the gel, at least) and make sure your blade isn't too old. It seems counter-intuitive, but I've actually found that the more often I shave the less likely I am to get razor burn.

Exactly my set up - except I tend to shave usually only every three days (I'm lazy). I think I'll start shaving daily and see if my situation improves. If not, I'll switch up to electric.

Taterdemalion Apr 9, 2006 06:06 PM

But does anyone know of any cream or other substance that you can apply to the razor bumps to get rid of them?

Little Brenty Brent Brent Apr 9, 2006 06:07 PM

Mm, not really, since I've never really had a problem with them. I guess some sort of aloe gel or something might be worth taking a look at?

I really hate disposables actually... I would suggest you give up on those pieces of crap. Here is what I suggest, get a badger hair brush, some good shaving soap, and a safety razor, or if you really want a close good feeling shave a straight razor. You can get all of that here:

http://www.classicshaving.com/Home.html

The good shaving soap will lather up nicely and provide you with a very nice shave which will prevent your razor bumps.

Now if you want to keep your shaving the same then use a safety razor, it's safe (duh), it lasts for a good amount of time instead of dulling out in like a week and it'll give you a good shave. If you do a straight razor, be prepared to spend a good amount of time for your shaving, and it's a little more dangerous (you're shaving with something that you could chop a finger off with, well maybe not... but oh well) but it'll be the best shaves you'll ever get (unless you got a barber shaving you with a straight razor).

I use a straight razor, but it's completely up to you as to what you use in the end.

BTW, try shaving after you take a warm shower, and use warm water on your face before you lather up.

I usually shave twice, once with the grain, and once against the grain. This enables a really close shave, and also reduces the chances of razor burn and bumps as well.

My method as well, too bad I have acne, it makes the shave much more hazardous.
Because my job requires it I shave every (work) day, with a razor once a week and every other day with an electric.

I currently use an electric razor and I am having a nasty case of bumps. The manual razors are way better for razor bumps, on my face anyways. Im swtiching back.

I look like an acupunture session gone wrong right now :(

you should probably avoid touching your face in that area as much as possible. i have a tendency to ge some really bad acne, but they were usually in places that I would touch more often (forehead, nose, cheekbones). The areas around my stubble have almost never broken out. Also, I noticed that facial hair is a good acne preventative screen, since after all, you aren't touching your face if it is covered by hair.

Be sure to clean the area first. Take your shower with soap/body wash THEN shave, then take a quick rinse off shower. Personally I don't shave anywhere but my face. I preffer to rip the hairs out by the roots.

Wait, are you talking about razors bumps just on the face? Maybe I misunderstood the subject.

Kaiten Apr 10, 2006 12:22 AM

It would be hard to get razor bumps anywhere else, most of the other skin is smooth and body hair doesn't get very stubby below the face/chin in all but the worst cases of body hair.
My electric causes worse problems then my razor too, but it's so much quicker than shaving the old fashinoned way. That and the fact that it has a hole in the blade guard causes some major neck irritation.

ArrowHead Apr 10, 2006 03:19 AM

I used to get razor bumps on my throat, when I shaved with the grain. Now that I go against the grain, they're all but eliminated.

Vkamicht Apr 10, 2006 12:34 PM

Hmm, am I the only one who just shaves in the shower, with hot water and nothing else? I don't go against the grain or anything, and have never had discomfort problems. I finish the spots I missed when I get out. Very simple process for me.

Eleo Apr 10, 2006 12:56 PM

I get razor bumps. I swore it was acne up until I realized the bumps only appeared after I shaved and were practically gone when I let my facial hair grow out. Now if I had a full beard I'd let my facial hair grow out, but I don't; I have sporadic hairs growing out of various places of my face. Its increased in volume over the years, but at the age of 20, its still not consistent enough to look anything but bummy when I don't shave.

So, I looked up the problem and it basically said it's just hair growing under your skin instead of out if your skin. How to stop it? Don't shave so close. It said use a single blade razor. I found a double-blade. It shaves close enough so that it looks like you've shaved when you do but without shaving so close that the hair is no longer poking out of your face.

So while those Mach 3's are awesome and make your face feel super smooth AT FIRST, in the long run they're bad for you. I'm a black dude so my hair naturally curls, so this is especially a problem with me.

It does too get stubbly if you shave it. My last girlfriend would get razor bumps sometimes, and trust me, she wasn't shaving her face.

rocketdog Apr 10, 2006 01:09 PM

gilette released a new shaving cream called fusion. u should check it out.

OmagnusPrime Apr 10, 2006 01:18 PM

I don't know if this has been suggested already or not, but one thing it could be is the blade on your shaver. If you haven't switched the blades or bought new ones for a while then I'd also recommend giving that a try.

They also a make a razor by the same name. The cartridges have 5 blades on one side for most shaving purposes and one blade on the other side for detailed jobs like sideburns.

It's actually just a bit better than the Mach 3, and about the same price. I switched over to Fusion when my Mach3 blades ran out and the local shop didn't have any in stock.

Taterdemalion Apr 10, 2006 03:10 PM

The thing is I used to only get a few bumps while shaving with a two-bladed razor or sometimes a Sensor 3 from Gillette, but I've been recently using a Shick Quattro, and the bumps having been getting out of hand since then. I put two and two together and stopped using those and recently bought some single bladed Bic razors, but am still getting bumps.

I will now wait a week to let my hair grow and let the bumps go away before shaving again, and when I do I'll use the tips you have all suggested. I will, however, not switch to an electric razor because I reall like my close shaves.
