Fastest and most reliable defrag
Opinions please.
|
for win 95/98/me, Norton Utilities 2002 has the best defrag ever made. Sadly its incompatible with the NT kernal so you can't use it on win2k and xp. Their defrag tool from utilities 2003 and up is pure shit, not much better then the built in windows defrag, if better at all.
for 2k and xp, I recommend O&O Defrag. It's blazing fast and does a good enough job. Haven't used anything that does a better job to be honest, even though it sometimes can't do anything about huge (1gb+) files if your hdd is too crowded (like, less then 10% free). But aside from that minor nuisance, its the best I saw for ntfs drives. |
Easily Diskeeper. It defrags lightning fast and in the background (it pauses when you use the HDD). It also can defrag at boot time and consolidate your MFT.
The recommended version is Diskeeper 10 Professional Premier if you use WinXP Home, but if you use WinXP Pro, Server Enerprise is the best route (note: you'll need to download an illegal copy of each if you don't want to pay hell-loads of money). |
I've stuck with O&O ever since I experimented with a bunch some time ago. I like it. It's ridiculously fast and does a good job I guess.

What is everyone's opinion of PerfectDisk 7? That is what I have right now, and so far it has served me rather well, but I am not sure if I can find something better.

Agreed there, Diskeeper seems to do a good enough job maintaining files for quick access. By the way, Kaiten you wouldn't happen to have Diskeeper 10 on you? :) |
O&O is the Photoshop of defragmentation. Don't settle for Paint Shop Pro.

There are many newer features over version 9, best of which, background defrag doesn't interrupt what you're doing at all anymore. |
Diskeeper is really fast but it doesnt defrag as well as PerfectDisk.

I like Diskeeper, unfortunately it's service is terrible at sticking to the schedule you set for it.
Apparently when you say "Weekends only, from 3 AM to 9AM," it doesn't think you really mean it, or something. |

With a decent PC and version 10, Diskeeper shoudn't even impact your HDD usage at all. I have a crappy 5400 RPM (not sure but likely) ATA66 hard drive and it doesn't slow Windows down defragging as near as much version 9 did. |
