X-Box (non 360) Modding

I'm now getting an old Xbox, so I can go ahead and mod it in order to turn it into what you'd consider a media center / codefree HD DVD player.

So much for the intention. You guys got any advice on how to actually do that...?
Other than "dude, use google"

LiquidAcid Sep 6, 2009 07:05 PM

You could use XBMC (XBox media center) for that.

XBMC Online Manual - XBMC

The online manual supplies you with everything you need.

I softmodded mine using Mechassault like on this video YouTube - How To Softmod Xbox

You're going to need an Action Replay and Ndure's Installer and one of the three games where you can use the exploit. They're the original Splinter Cell, Mechassault or 007 Agent Under Fire, and all of them have their own version of the installer so make sure you get the correct one one. Back when I did it you needed a specific version of the game as well, I'm not sure if the newer versions of the installer work on all versions of the games, though.

Once you have the Ndure Installer's save onto the memory card that comes with Action Replay you just copy it over like on the video, run Mechassault, then load up the save file and it'll reboot the console into the installer as seen on the video. After everything is intalled I'm guessing what you want is the Xbox Media Center to play all kinds of video files. It's really simple, I did it all in about 20 minutes. It was a long time ago but I think I can help you through it if you need.

Cool, thanks I'll pester you with questions when the thing's arrived. :)

Soluzar Sep 8, 2009 08:09 AM

It's really easy to do. Count me as another person to pester with questions, if ya like. It might be hard to find an Action Replay these days, but you can always make a homebrew USB adapter for any XBOX Memory Unit. Once you own the proper game and have the appropriate save file available to you, it's basically an automatic installation process.

Be warned though... it's not so great at handling styled softsubs or h.264 video format. For standard definition video with simple subs, hardsubs or no subs at all, it's great.

Just some question. Which Action Replay do I need, and does this tutorial support for the 360?

DATEL ACTION REPLAY POWERSAVES FOR XBOX 360 - FREE POST - eBay (item 200366753044 end time Sep-23-09 08:19:22 PDT)

Is this good enough, plus is there any specific memory card I need for the xbox 360?

That would work for modding XBOX, but none of this is applicable to the 360.

Chingy Sep 9, 2009 06:40 AM

What do you mean by pf applicable to the 360?

I have watched the youtube movie, but just a another question. Is there any other specific devices I need before I can softmod the xbox 360?

Right now I know I need a Action replay, and a Xbox 360 USB Memory stick or something, plus one of the games: Splinter Cell, Mechassault or 007 Agent Under Fire.

I have tried to googling around, but the information is so messed up! What I mean is the info I found aroud on the net is like 3-4 years old, and I don't know if it will work if I'm going to try to play newer games today.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Sep 9, 2009 06:52 AM

He means "of". It was a minor typo.

Because they're talking about the old Xbox, and you're wrong in thinking they're talking about the new one. You know. 2001 to 2006? Large. Black. Halo 2? Yeah.

That one.

Chingy Sep 10, 2009 12:23 AM

Whops, I should have known the minor typo. Anyway, I knew they were talking about the old one, but I was thinking if it might work out with the new too.

Is the procedure the same as the old one?

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Sep 10, 2009 12:31 AM

No.

No, it is not. 360 modding is an entirely different process, which I do believe you already have a thread regarding.

Anyone wanting to post info regarding that, use this: http://www.gamingforce.org/forums/ha...-mod-chip.html

Chingy Sep 10, 2009 07:04 AM

Haha, true. The thing is I just saw another guy which almost had the same topic as me, so I just used both for the same questions (kinda stupid, yeah...). I didn't think so much about it anyway.

Alright, Thank you for your help though! I will just try and looking around the link Ryu did provide me.

Soluzar Sep 10, 2009 07:06 AM

XBOX 360 can only be modded by way of opening it up. There's no software modification like on the original XBOX. They learned a lesson.

Chingy Sep 10, 2009 03:03 PM

Alright, thanks for the info Soluzar! I will check around more info!

Thanks a lot!

Okay additional question: is it possible to unlock the HD capabilities (since i have it hooked up with a component cable) with softmodding, or is that something i need to go hard-mod on the thing?

Detection Sep 28, 2009 03:15 PM

With the XBMC I'm pretty sure you can, haven't tried it since I don't have component cables for it though. I know for sure I've seen emulators on it that can do at least 720p.

Tellurian Sep 28, 2009 04:52 PM

Kewl. Thx.
Still need some components for pulling it off... Mainly the Action Replay thingy. Splinter Cell shouldn't be too hard to find in some used game bargain bin...

Question:
Is it possible to use one of these USB-Controller switches instead of an memory card thingy?
Basically because the controllerport / USB adapter is a lot cheaper...

Link me. I'm not sure what you mean. It's possible to make or buy a USB adapter which will connect XBOX memory unit to the PC... if that's what you mean, then... might work.

Tellurian Oct 1, 2009 11:25 AM

Amazon.com: PC USB to XBOX Adapter for Xbox Linux Use a Mouse & Keyboard: Video Games This.

Goes into the controller port, to attach USB stuff into there.
Dunno, I read descriptions where it said that this could also be used to plug USB storage media into the 'box, which is basically what I need to transfer the "corrupted" softmod safe files.
Or do do I absolutely need a memory card for that?

Soluzar Oct 1, 2009 11:33 AM

Oh right, I'm sorry I should have realised... you can use that. Somehow.

It's a lot easier with a real AR Max, sad to say... but this will work.

Using A Usb Stick To Transfer Gamesave Exploits! - Scenyx Entertainment Community

Try that tutorial, it should help ya out. It will have some terminology that's confusing for a noob to the scene, but read it through and then ask what you need to know. I'll do my best to help. For starters... xbins is the IRC channel and FTP server where you get XBOX homebrew binaries. If you ever see any reference to getting files from the "usual place" this is it, lame as hell, but it stopped MS from shutting down the forums I guess. No overt distribution of copyright material.

Just hope you don't have a v1.6 console, which blocks the use of USB mass storage devices in this way. If you do have a v1.6 and honestly I forget how you can tell, there is another way. For what it costs, I'd try this way first though.

It's always hard to be 100% sure without trying first, but I think this might work, too.

Instead of using a memory card and game you can open up the xbox and use a hot swap method with a computer (IDE). I put XBMC but wasn't very impressed with the quality.

Here is the link I used:
(How to softmod your xbox...for FREE)

Be careful it might void your warranty! lol
