iMac optical drive spinning loud and fast!

What I at first thought was a fan problem turns out to be my optical drive. It's spinning fast, without any disc inside it. It makes a very loud noise constantly.

Is there a way to stop the spinning of this? Or at least bring it back down around 1xxx RPM?

Hmmmm interesting that they say these sounds are normal. It sounds just like a disc is constantly spinning up. Strange they don't mention whether it's normal for it to be occurring 100% of the time. Anyway, thanks for that site.
