Another decent week.
(2 points) Gain Ground SX (Red Book Audio) - Stage 1: About what I expect from SNES-era action synth. It doesn't reinvent the wheel but it hits a lot of the right notes (and that's two cliches for the price of one for you). (2 points) Samsara Naga 2 - Swimming: Nice energy, and the piano really carries it through. (1 point) Sword of the New World: Granado Espada: Manifest Destiny (Game Rip) - Para Variar: Ironically enough, this has an Iwadare-esque vibe with the way it introduces and deploys its guitar. A fun, mid-tempo tune. (1 point) Clive Barker's Undying (Game Rip) - Immortal Soul: Slightly empty calories here, but I love its ethereal sound. As for the rest: Anthem of the Tyrant is actually my nomination, from a decent enough soundtrack, but admittedly it falls on the standard side, and the middle part is clearly its best segment; against weaker competition, I would have given it a point. Ghaleon's Theme -- you know, the actual Iwadare track this week -- is pretty standard for him, featuring some of his heavy-handed elements but never approaches truly gothic or epic. Be Your Age has some funk, but also doesn't feel mixed properly, leaving a sound that lacks teeth. choir of curse is all grandiosity but no payout. |
Chaos Legion Original Soundtrack - choir of curse (Boss BGM -type1-) I've generally liked what I hear in Chaos Legion--namely, a nice combo of contemporary sounds and classic choir. That same basic sound is here, though I was hoping that it'd get put through some more paces, as the tune really needs more development over its length.
Clive Barker's Undying (Game Rip) - Immortal Soul I'm with le Chuck on this one; very nice ethereal vibe overall but lacking in meat. Gain Ground SX (Red Book Audio) - Stage 1 Garden variety get-movin' synth. Good for what it is, but also rather samey. Jade Empire Original Soundtrack - Anthem of the Tyrant I have had some Jade Empire songs in my queue for a while; this isn't one of them. Frankly, I think that OST goes a little overboard on the Orientalisms a lot of the time and is at its best when it's more straightforward, and this is a good example of that. Sounds authentic-ish but doesn't really do much else. Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete Music Soundtrack - Ghaleon's Theme I've heard this one before, many times (always assumed Lunar was off-limits for nominating but I guess not). Good, but it wouldn't be my 1st or even 17th choice from the OST. Samsara Naga 2 - Swimming This sounds too fast for any of the strokes I know, although it does have that breezy feel that screams out "Caribbean." A little slight, but nice. Sword of the New World: Granado Espada: Manifest Destiny (Game Rip) - Para Variar Korea has been churning out an awful lot of high quality VGM since the turn of the century, and this is a great example of that. A really nice fusion of elements that ordinarily wouldn't go well together, with both a modern and ancient feel to it. Quite nice! Viewpoint - Be Your Age! (Area 3) Fuzzy funk that sounds like it was recorded on a tape deck held up to a TV speaker and then transferred to digital by way of wax cylinder. Funk isn't my bag even with crystal clear sound, I'm afraid--I am simply too square for it. The Point Spread Para Variar - 3 pts. Immortal Soul - 2 pts. Choir of Engrish - 1 pt. Nomination Composer: Bertrand Eluerd Album: Evil Twin: Cyprien's Chronicles Track Title: Theme de Cyprien Year: 2002 |
Crapppp, I nominated the wrong Chaos Legion song. I meant to nominate the drones of hell. This one's OK but repetitive and not nearly as good. :-/
Oh well. Shows how detached from SotW I've been lately. |
Next nomination:
Composer: Yoko Kanno Artist: Ilaria Graziano Album: Tank! The Best, from the game Cowboy Bebop: Tsuioku no Yakyoku Track Title: Pearls Disc: 1 (of 1) Track Number: 11 Additional Info: This track is one of the 3 that were included in this recopilatory album that were made exclusively for the PS2 game of Cowboy Bebop. The album was launched months before the game (8, if i'm not incorrect), but I don't think that they were just some bonus tracks that were included in the game as fillers. "Diamonds" and "Einstein Grooving" share the same melody in a moment, which suggests that they are narratively correlated (to the story of the game). Ugh, I hope that all this was understandable ^^U File: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=EOR6VUVW |

3 points: Clive Barker's Undying (Game Rip) - Immortal Soul
2 points: Viewpoint - Be Your Age! (Area 3) 1 point: Sword of the New World: Granado Espada: Manifest Destiny (Game Rip) - Para Variar Well. This is a pretty poor week. I hate sounding apathetic and to an extent mean in my SotW comments, but there's hardly anything good about this week. "Immortal Soul" caught my ear and makes for a nice listen, but isn't directly impressive. The funk of the Viewpoint track is good enough for two points; and the final point goes to S.F.A, even though this track is severely lacking in the energetic core and creativity S.F.A. is so renowned for. Good thing Drakken said nominating this Chaos Legion track was an accident, 'cause otherwise I was going to go on a full crusade against it. One of the most unappealing tracks I've ever heard in the SotW, I'm afraid! |

3 points - Samsara Naga 2 - Swimming
I think I've heard this track somewhere before. Anyway, I like the mood and instrument usage. 2 points - Gain Ground SX (Red Book Audio) - Stage 1 Has a good melody and stuff. Votes and nom coming soon nowish, placeholder here etc. listening now
Holy crap, I didn't know Gain Ground was put onto a CD based system. I love that game so much, it's good to hear that classic tune in a redone form. And oh crap I just spilled ice cream on my keyboard. The Lunar song gets points because nom bias and I really enjoy that song. The Swimming song's bassline started to sound really repetitive, but then it's also really awesome so I'm glad it kept playing. 3 points - Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete Music Soundtrack - Ghaleon's Theme 1 point - Gain Ground SX (Red Book Audio) - Stage 1 1 point - Samsara Naga 2 - Swimming 1 point - Viewpoint - Be Your Age! (Area 3) Immortal Soul nearly got a point too. |
I was detained in Pittsburgh for five days without a computer. Glad I didn't get shut out of the voting for this week. It's kind of unfortunate that I didn't find a ton of interesting material this week.
2 Points: Sword of the New World: Granado Espada: Manifest Destiny (Game Rip) - Para Variar 2 Points: Samsara Naga 2 - Swimming 2 Points: Gain Ground SX (Red Book Audio) - Stage 1 |
