Perseid meteor shower

Google's got their image up, and the first article is

It says that while last night was the best chance, tonight could be pretty good too.

Did anyone go out late to try and catch these last night? Anyone planning to do anything tonight?

I'm in Boston, so it's a little tough for me. Looking see what sort of places further north I could go that'd offer decent viewing spots.

I'd love to take a camera out there and just do some bulb shots on a decent tripod. But, alas, I'm in California. :(

I went out on the back patio for a short while and looked. I didn't see a single meteor, unfortunately. They're pretty unmistakable in the sky but perhaps there was still too much city glow for me.

My brother reports that he went to a much darker area for around five hours. Through the whole time, he spotted only eight meteors which is kind of disappointing. But a friend on Facebook, who came up to this county for viewing, counted thirty.

I just think western New York was not the ideal viewing region.

Apparently it's supposed to be best tonight, from what I heard.

Which is awesome, cause it's mah birthday. :D

If I remember tonight, I will try and catch a glimpse. I doubt I'll see much though, living in bright-ass Las Vegas.

Yeldarb Aug 12, 2009 09:01 PM

I'm going to see what I can observe from my "quaint" little town. I'll report back what I see.

Everyone was on twitter say "METEOR STORM!!!" I honestly thought it was some pokemnz attack, then when I found out it was a real one later that night I was already too lazy to walk all the way to my mirror.

NinjaguyDan Aug 12, 2009 10:33 PM

WNY too Crash?

I went outside for an hour and saw one, but that was about it.
Thanks for posting Radez, I've never seen a real shooting star until tonight.

Sarag Aug 12, 2009 11:30 PM

Didn't see SHIT. I think I have to be farther away from civilization to really get anything.

Dark Nation Aug 13, 2009 01:50 AM

We had thunderstorms tonight, of all times and places (The freakin desert), so no meteors were spotted or much less attempted.

Radez Aug 13, 2009 02:10 AM

Yeah, I guess Massachusetts is pretty overcast tonight. I drove about an hour outside of Boston, to a beach actually, and all the way it was basically cloud cover through the horizon. Not a star visible. Oh well.

Vemp Aug 15, 2009 05:31 PM

IT WAS RAINING! Curse the heavens and their evasive majesties!

How did I miss this thread??? Tuesday night there was an event at the planetarium for it but when we went outside to look for meteors, it had clouded over so we didn't see anything. Last night I had a friend from the planetarium over to play with my telescope (we were looking at Jupiter and three of it's moons), he saw three meteors and I didn't see any :(

Well it was super foggy in Buffalo/Cheektowaga that night, so I couldn't see shit.

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Aug 15, 2009 08:45 PM

Do you live right down by the river or something? The sky was clear as a bell one county up.

Grundlefield Earth Aug 15, 2009 10:54 PM

No I live in N Cheektowaga. However, I was coming home from work at 2:30-3AM from the Buffalo/Cheektowaga townline near the 190.
