Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition

I picked this game up in the past week and I am loving every minute of playing as Vergil. The game is not as much of a ballbuster DMC1 was (the first time through), but still had its moments (even on Easy against the Doppleganger). But Beowulf+Vergil means ass kicking to no end, it makes B ranking or better no problem at all.
I hope DMC4 can continue the trend of good DMC sequels, DMC on the PS3 will be a sight to behold. For those who have beaten the game: How hard do you think the game was, and have you unlocked Nelo Angelo yet?

Single Elbow Mar 2, 2006 09:24 PM

The initial difficulty was a breeze. Really a breeze since I finished it without using any items (save for level 20 and I really want to finish the game so I used a gold orb). The following difficulties were manageable.

For Vergil, I liked using him even though he was slower than Dante. Beowulf alone causes good amounts of damage while Yamato's range was admirable, same for the combination blades which are pretty fast.

Gripe is that Vergil had no story on his own (end of cutscene showed at base of Temen-ni-Gru and started at.. Dante's place and followed Dante's trail from there?) and Jester. Fighting Jester was fun, sure, but I don't see any reason why I should encounter him.

To date, I haven't finished any modes that will unlock massive damage during DT and the Bloody Palace as well.

Overall, it is quite satisfying. Like you said, it may not be a smashing great time like the first, but it has its moments with Vergil.

I'm curious to see how crazy Heavan Or Hell mode is when I finally get there... But that's a ways off, I'm still on Normal with Vergil (Dante has been badly neglected since I beat the game).

Hantei Mar 2, 2006 09:27 PM

Enjoyed playing through with Vergil, but haven't really gotten around to getting all the bonuses as I had lost most of my addiction to the original release.

However, Bloody Palace has been pretty fun, especially once you get near the end of it (once you hit the 9000 lvls it's DMD or VMD mode). Vergil is the best when it comes to Bloody Palace. Spamming Phantom Blades and comboing at the same time pretty much makes you unstoppable in there, though it's exhasting once you reach the last lvl (it's Dante vs Vergil DMD, where I unfortunately died, almost beat him too). That's probably the best thing about Vergil, being able to mash out your projectiles while comboing with your melees at the same time. As that method drains boss's HP really quickly, and makes short work of enemy sentries.

The only thing I didn't like about Vergil was his style, or better yet his lack of a double jump. It was so difficult (even frustrating at times) to platform with him, as it took a bit of practice to peform Trick Up (when trying to complete Secret Missions or reaching hidden items/orbs).

Additional Post:
Regarding DMC3 figures.... Organic Hobby is releasing/distributing Kaiyodo's fully posable, new joint articulation line of figures called Revoltech.

One of the figures in this line, that they're making, is Dante from DMC3!

Dante is going to be fully posable as opposed to the DMC1,2 KT figure line. His cape can be morphed into any style, he can mimic any pose from the game (thanks to the new joint system they've created). As for accesories, he'll come with Rebellion (awakened form), Nevan, Ebony&Ivory, Shotgun, alternate head, and some sort of stand.

Dante, along with the rest of the Revoltech figure, will be about 6" tall with 14 points of articulation and comes accesories/weapons and additional/replacable parts. Set for release some time in May, at a price of approximately $22.

I'll definitely buying this one, as it's looking to be one of the best Dante figures available.

Some images of the Dante figure, plus an image how the joint looks/works.

That's some high quality stuff. Most Action figures I see are over glossed $4 plastic that's even below the standards of a happy meal. Of course what would you expect from Japan?

Megalith Mar 3, 2006 02:11 AM

All of these "ultra-poseable" figures are worthless. What am I, 5 years old.

Can I please get my Lady statue already.

Well, yeah.

What's different in the Special Edition version over the original DMC3? For it's price it better have something worthwhile otherwise this is just going to be another attention seeker.

Fucking seconded. Also, why does Dante look like a gym teacher.

Vergil is pretty fun to play as. I haven't played as Dante in a hell of a long time, so going back was kinda weird. Bloody Palace is fun but I keep getting ass-raped in the 8000s over stupid crap.

  • Playable Vergil, which was probably the biggest addition, who also comes with unlockable costumes, one of them being Nelo Angelo
  • Jester is a boss - can be fought against 3 times
  • Gold (JPNS ver) and Yellow (NA ver) orb continue system
  • Demo theatre - view the game's cut scenes after viewing them
  • Bloody Palace - goes all the way to lvl 9999, and you actually get something out of beating it
  • Turbo mode - game speed is approx 20% faster
  • Very Hard Mode - which is the equivalent to the NA version's Hard mode
The goods are worth the lowered price IMO

Cirno Mar 3, 2006 04:35 AM

It should also be noted that though the game can only be played 20% faster, it does make for a different experience. There's no reason to go back to the normal settings after playing Turbo mode.

BIGWORM Mar 3, 2006 02:49 PM

I don't know why, but I seem to enjoy the Gauntlets than the Beowulf, even though they're technically the same thing. =/

Terran Gell Mar 3, 2006 05:26 PM

Playing as Vergil was amazing. Listening to him say "Scum" and "Die" while performing his rapid slash made me recall the days of playing the original DMC3 and wishing I could play as him.

The only 2 problems I had were that he didn't have his own cutscenes and you didn't get to fight Dante during the 3 encounters you're supposed to have with him. I could have lived with another month delay for them to add this stuff (even if it were done half assed). Hell, they should have just started making this special edition earlier :p

RYU Mar 3, 2006 06:16 PM

Dante is best to play game,Vergil is suck you can't play it on hard mode.the game make for dante only.but Capcom didn't working good on this edition try to play Vergil on stage 9,must change boss on this stage they didn't make any different.play Vergil vs Vergil :aargh: !!!!! also on cutscenes

Kaiten Mar 3, 2006 07:15 PM

Vergil definately is more technique oriented than Dante. While Vergil's weapons do more damage than Dante's (and have less techniques), with Vergil using your weapons correctly (especially using the Yamoto and with the Dark Slayer style). Vergil adds depth to the game when with Dante all I did is use Tempest and pounded the life out of the monsters.

Mucknuggle Mar 4, 2006 07:50 AM

How do you make good combos in this game? I can't ever seem to get good style points.

It's a combination of switching weapons AND combo orientation (re-switching combos in the middle and inputting a new one).

Just make sure you're attacking multiple enimies and varying your movements a lot. With Vergil it's VITAL that you use the Dark Slayer moves as often as possible, it's much harder for Vergil to block than it is for Dante (especially with the Yamoto). With Dante, use the Swordmaster sytle, the plethora of abilities you get with it makes your Devil Arms combo powerhouses.
Style points are generally the weakest area I perform in, though some missions are much easier than others to pile on style points. This adds greatly to the incentive to use combos and dodge well.

Eleo Mar 11, 2006 04:32 AM

I tried my hand at Dante Must Die mode and got my ass handed to me. I actually never played Very Hard mode; which I guess is the equivalent of the original version's Hard mode. I guess I'm kind of sick of playing as Dante, however.

I played as Vergil for a few moments. I'm really upset he doesn't actually have his own levels; own path. I don't expect him to have a completely separate game, but he gets one cutscene followed by all of Dante's levels. You even pretty much fight yourself where it would make more sense to fight Dante. Would it have been that difficult to make a few new cutscenes and redesign the Vergil battles?

Surely the gameplay is different with him, and it's definitely fun to play (and use the moves you used to loathe. Even still, playing as Vergil seems very tacked on, where I feel that a small bit of development could have made his missions more believable and engaging.

Cirno Mar 11, 2006 06:45 PM

Instead, Vergil gets to fight Jester (for no reason). Instead of creating an entirely new, somewhat boring boss, I think Capcom should've just redone the Vergil fights while playing Vergil's mode. I can kind of understand not changing the other boss fights, as Vergil never fought the majority of them in the first place.

Hopefully with DMC4, as Vergil's a rumored character (with official artwork of him in several of the press scans), we'll get him as a playable character with his own branching storyline.

That would be very nice, because fighting a red clothed Vergil just deflates the point of playing as Vergil. Vergil and dante are eternal rivals, they should have put Dante in those fights, I'd love to see how the fight takes place from the (truely) opposing perspective we saw when playing as Dante.

Cirno Mar 18, 2006 10:34 PM

Blocking bullets with well-timed slashes or having Vergil learn a "deflector" skill (like the one he uses in the boss fights when you shoot at him) would make sense. Dante would basically be Lady with melee attacks.

I guess the programmers were too busy working on DMC4 to polish Special Edition, which I hope is the case. Should that be true, this "laziness" can be overlooked~

Oh a deflector skill would have been handy, especially against those cycloptic-projectile demons. But i can see why they omitted it, cause Dante was the only one that actually shot bullets and the fights against"Dante" were really just Vergil.

They really could have done more to polish Vergil's game.

Goggles Mar 20, 2006 11:44 AM

Yeah, I wish Vergil had been more different, but I am sure they were hard at work on DMC 4 and making sure that Lady statue gets made (thirded?). Anyone know where I can pick up that Dante figure either? I ran a search on Organic Hobby and didn't get any official website.
