Time Travel!

So, I'm sitting here all bored like, unable to sleep and I got thinking about time travel and how awesome it would be if I could go back about 4 hours and go to bed.

So here is my question at large, if you had the ability to time travel, where would you go? Why would you go to that time period? and lastly, if there was a person you could meet in that time period, who would it be?

For me, it would be 1776. After reading David McCullough's book with the same name, and watching the HBO series, it peaked my interest even more.

Also, I feel like partying with Ben Franklin would have to be the most fun ANYONE could have, there are a few other delegates that seemed like they knew how to have a good time too.

So, if you could go anywhere in history, what would be your prime location?

I would go back as far as necessary to make myself a permanent deity figure. You know, rule the world and all that jazz.

But on a purely for fun basis, I think I'd just go back in time and bang all my friends' moms. MILF HUNTERS.....IN TIIIIIMMMMMEEEE!!!!~111

I'd actually go forward if that were possible. It would probably be a crapshoot for how it would play out, but I'd invest in the markets before I left to hedge my bets, in case those are still around. I'd guess 200 years as I'd want to get over the Singularity (if its real) and see what's beyond. Who I'd meet would really depend on how things unfold. Maybe go talk to Kirk if we're all super-happy Roddenberry vision, Hari Seldon if galactic empire's in the cards, or Mad Max to buy a flamethrower if things go bad. On the off chance my only choice is Skynet, then I'll see about turning that Time Machine right the hell around.

I wish I had the creativity to think of this...Some of my friends moms were HOT back in the day...

And then you'd be all like 'Dude, I might be your DAD.' Or something.

That aside... I'm not exactly sure where I'd go. Future? Probably. Not sure how far ahead, though. I've probably been watching waaay too much Doctor Who to formulate a cohesive response to this.

I'd go back in time to see how accurate certain historical accounts are. Whenever I'm reading about historical stuff I always go "wouldn't it be cool if we knew for certain?"

Isn't that what primary sources are generally good for?

Anyway, me, I dunno perhaps just to catch premieres of the great classical works, to actually experience hearing a work for the first time, and knowing it will be one of the most lauded pieces of music in the future.

Actually, I decided to theme my radio show around this today. Going pretty well so far... Even mentioned lurker's response. I'll probably throw a few others out there too.

That's totally awesome. If I knew how to access your radio show I would totally listen.

Keep me posted on what people are saying on it if it's a call in show!

This, on a dot. It'd be interesting to see how things actually played out.

I feel like this thread doesn't address the larger and more important consequences of time travel, particularly traveling to the past. Causal loops, spawning parallel universes, paradoxes, and possibly coming to terms with the harsh reality of determinism. It's not all fun and games, guys. You could break the entire fucking universe.

Plus you'd have to account for the position of the planet. I don't think you want to travel back into the cold vacuum of space.

Timberwolf8889 Aug 9, 2009 01:01 AM

Why you gotta be like that...spoil everyone's fun?

Eleo Aug 9, 2009 01:02 AM

Not to mention the universe is expanding, you probably could time travel back to Earth if you wanted to.

Ozma Aug 9, 2009 01:46 AM

We are only imagining things. Take it easy.

(Serious ones) Lots of reason...maybe from some events I'm curious such as the destruction of Berlin Wall [is that how you people name it? sorry if I'm wrong --'] to actually meet some historical people I adore. Or may just to see how actually people lived when technology was not as sophisticated as today.

(Funny ones) To know whether Mona Lisa exists or not^^

For history accounts, since I've studied three different versions of an event at school (which tend to crash and deny each other), it might been quite nice...as long as I don't ruin something by doing anything stupid like tripping over the street and stumbling over Hitler^^

1. goto the future, acquire some stable, good, powerful genetic mutation stuff.
2. goto the past, apply the gene on my youngerself.
3. ???
4. PROFIT

(bonus)
5. stay in the future that has safe/common space travel and get off this rock (that would be Earth).

If I could travel back in time I would:

1. Watch Apollo 13 lift off.
2. Find out who built Stonehenge.
3. Shake Moses' hand.
4. Prove that the pyramids of Egypt were built by robot aliens.

I want to go back in time to the Renaissance and see all those great paintings in their original glory. And maybe find out who Leonardo da Vinci was painting when he painted the Mona Lisa. :)
