Machinarium

Not sure how many are already familiar with it, but Machinarium is the upcoming new point & click adventure title from Amanita Design, the Czech developer of the beautiful and bizarre Samorost and Samorost 2

Storyline in a nutshell:
Quote:

A little robot who’s been thrown out to the scrap yard behind the city must return and confront the Black Cap Brotherhood and save his robot-girl friend.
I'll let the screens speak for themselves.

Game is coming out this fall. Pre-order available for 17 icobux. I can't fucking wait <3

Game is out now. Available on the developer's site, Steam and a number of other dl stores. LOOK IT UP.

OmagnusPrime Aug 6, 2009 06:05 AM

Definitely looks absolutely fantastic (beautiful and bizarre is a good description). Will have to check out that trailer when I get home tonight. Unfortunately since I'm Mac-based these days I doubt I'll be able to play the game.

The trailer is on Gametrailers.com, and as far as I know Macs can play flash video (e.g., Youtube). There's also an option (usually) to download the video to your comp, in .wmv and .mov formats (That latter being what you'd be after).

Having that said, this game has a VERY unique artstyle, or at least one I haven't seen before.

map car man words telling me to do things Aug 6, 2009 06:36 AM

Nowadays Gametrailers.com requires a log-in to be able to download, but the HD trailer is available for streaming in flash, quicktime and wmv formats as well as download.

THE POWER OF WATER Aug 6, 2009 06:41 AM

I think he's referring to the game itself, not the trailer.

In which case don't fret! They're coming out with a Mac version too.

Seriously dudes grab the pre-order for this game, it's three bucks less than the regular price, AND you get some high res pics, AND you get a few tracks from the soundtrack. Plus this is going to be fantastic, poor little robot drummer boy ;____;

Muzza Aug 6, 2009 07:03 AM

Man, I'm sold. I love the art style and the premise of a robotic metropolis. Stories with robots like this little guy always seem to get to me, too (for example, WALL-E, or Cube from Live-A-Live). I haven't played the Samorost games but will do so as soon as I can.

I'll definitely be getting Machinarium.

map car man words telling me to do things Aug 6, 2009 07:12 AM

Oh right, how silly of me. I was focusing more on DN's post than OP's.

But yeah, preordered dat shit, gonna check out the pack when I get home.

EDIT:
OH GOD HI-RES POOR LITTLE ROBOT DRUMMER GUY IT'S ALL SO TOO MUCH ;_; <3

OmagnusPrime Aug 6, 2009 07:20 AM

CHz is correct, I did indeed mean I wouldn't be able to play the game (not the trailer). But that's awesome news if they're doing a Mac version too. I mean, really there's no reason not too, so woo. Might have to lay down a pre-order then. Will check it out later for sure.

Dark Nation Aug 6, 2009 07:30 AM

Ha ha, yeah I thought he meant the trailer. Well, I might pre-order it, depends on how things go.

Sarag Aug 6, 2009 10:49 AM

I'm p sure the guys illustrating this game should be illustrating children's story books too.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Aug 7, 2009 05:12 AM

Oh my. Oh my.

The art in this preorder package is :3::3::3::3::3::3::3::3::3::3::3::3:

Music's pretty good too. I hope they hit the October date. No reason not to, really, so yay~

This.

Stuck my pre-order in and looking forward to when it hits as the art/music in the pack is definitely rather lovely. The trailer also is pretty awesome and seeing the artwork in motion is quite something.

Slight FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF because they're coming out with a gorgeous retail version in some European countries, with soundtrack CD and Samorost 2 as well.

Machinarium (inkl. Samorost 2): Amazon.de: Games

I'll probably play the dl version I've preordered and try for a physical copy later. The game will probably not have any written dialogue, so german menus wouldn't be a bother. Or they make a small english translated print later. Who knows. Still. Do want ;_;

No. Hard Pass. Oct 9, 2009 02:52 AM

Q. Why do the nazis get it? They don't deserve it.

map car man words telling me to do things Oct 9, 2009 02:58 AM

They have benign publishers. No one elsewhere would buy it anyway. Most of the point & click games come from Germany and Russia these days.

But... but... WE would buy them. I bet Skills would, too. He's not completely lame.

Explain Hasselhoff. And Falco.

Don't worry.

I can wait.

Hamu-Sumo Oct 10, 2009 04:37 AM

For all topics about Hasselhoff you should contact the NASA and ESA organizations. I'm not familiar with alien species unfortunately. And well, regarding Falco, what's to explain? He rocked too hard with Amadeus and died out in the dark. That's sad because the Vienna dialect is funny to listen but even almighty kinds can't influence the wheel of fate without burning the fingers.

map car man words telling me to do things Oct 16, 2009 02:26 AM

Just got my download link for the game and soundtrack in the email. Fuck yes, I can't wait to get home and play this. Awesome timing, just in time for the weekend too and I just finished Ninja Gaiden Black last night, with not a game to play. FAN-TASTIC.

EDIT:
Good god their poor little server is overloaded. I'm getting 15-24kb/s at best :(

Additional Spam:
Game is pretty awesome so far. It looks absolutely gorgeous. They're still using flash, but the animation is just beyond everything. There is hundreds of little minute animations going on in every screen and it's really like a picture book beautifully come to life. Everything oozes character and cheeky humor. The slapstick is really something.

Control and interface feels like a natural progression from Samorost (where you only clicked on items for actions and never moved your character or examined anything), with you moving your little robot guy around with a mouse click, and clicking on items for actions, taking one screen at a time. You can only interact with objects that are in your reach, so you can't just sweep the screen for items of interest, you first have to walk up to them before you even know if it's usable. It takes some getting used to, but does not feel counter-intuitive at all. Items you pick up will go into your inventory, where you can combine and use them as you see fit. I love how he eats everything to store them.

You can stretch your character to make him taller or shorter, in order to reach higher or lower locations and it works beautifully hand in hand with the simplified interaction.

As suspected before, there's no dialogue or written text, everything is portrayed in speech and thought bubble animations.

The amount of little idle animations on both the main character and the world around him is just amazing, it's all so wonderfully charming. You even get to see some of the untold backstory if you leave him still long enough and he starts remembering things about him and his girlfriend, how they met and stupid things they pulled off when they were little. It's so cute I could cry.

Oh and to get an idea of the detail on screen, here's a fullsize screenshot:

Yeah. JUST got home from school myself and am dealing with this same issue, but I can't really wait for it to finish.

At my current speed it'll take another four hours before it finishes :(

Gechmir Oct 16, 2009 03:55 PM

Saw adverts for this on Steam. I'll definitely hit it up =o

I cancelled the original download and proceeded to get it with flashget, just in case firefox decided to simply forget it was downloading something.

It eventually speeded up and I got it in about 90 minutes total. Originally it estimated it'd take past 3 hours.

THE POWER OF WATER Oct 16, 2009 07:03 PM

I know everyone is playing this game right now instead of reading GFF, right (right, faggots), but if you have some time away from the game for some reason, Boing Boing posted a bunch of concept art scans from the artists' sketchbooks.

Some of us aren't playing because their damn server IMPLODED when my download was at 94%.
