Router problems
I hate routers. Always giving me problems.
This new problem involves one of the three laptops that are connected wirelessly. Just this morning I updated the firmware to latest and the laptop was working fine at the time. Now it is not. It says it's connected to my network but the darn thing can't connect to any website. The error message I'm getting is that it's NOT connected. I've tried rebooting the laptop and disconnecting/reconnecting to the network but I can't get a page to appear. I'm pretty much out of ideas at this point. All the other laptops are working fine except for this one. |
A bit more information could help:
- What router? - Wireless setup (encryption, etc.) - What laptops? (most important: which WiFi card?) - Which operating system? - What app do you use to test? - Do pings work? - Does pinging inside the internal network work? |
That would help.
It's a Linksys WRT310N router with WPA2 personal encryption. Acer Aspire laptop. Can't check the wifi card right now. Win XP. Haven't checked the others yet. I don't have it on me right now. I tried IE and Google Chrome to test connection and nada. |
Then try pinging the other systems in the internal network. In both ways (meaning if machine A is the problematic one and B and C work: try pinging B and C from A and also try pinging A from B/C).
More stuff to try: - Check event log on system A for suspicious messages about the network - Is there some sort of log on the router? If yes, then check it - Try resetting the router settings (backup everything important prior to do that), sometimes rebooting doesn't do the trick - Try disabling WPA2 and test connection with unencrypted setup |
Ah I figured it out apparently. I checked the laptop and noticed it was not set to obtain the IP address automatically. I changed it and now it works again. I dunno how it got switched. I certainly didnt do anything this morning.
Anyway, thanks a lot for the help LiquidAcid. I'll close the thread now. |
