Record of Agarest War - Goes Where?

Idea Factory does more sexual favors to get their shit brought stateside. This time Aksys (of recent Blazblue reputation) has taken the plunge, bringing over an old PS3 Strategy/RPG Dating Sim, Record of Agarest War.

Fighting plays out like a strategic RPG where each character has his/her own set of moves, but by moving each character to an appropriate square, you can chain characters together and pull off combos. After each round of combat, each character will regenerate AP and accumulate SP points. When enough SP points have been accumulated, characters can unleash special attacks.

The game includes dating sim elements through its "Soul Breed" system which allows the player to create a new character by pursuing a relationship with a female character.

It's like if you could pop out babies in Persona 3 and 4, only minus a good game on top of that.

The game is not getting a retail release, but will instead be distributed only via PSN. I guess this will minimize the losses. No price or date announced yet, either.

Ahahaha, Soul Breed. POP OUT BABIES FOR EXTRA XP!

I came into this thread with a small glimmer of hope that this had something to do with Record of Lodoss War. I am leaving this thread saddened and confused.

Soul Breeding sounds hilarious enough to warrant a download if they made it cheap enough. $5 would be fair for baby popping adventures.

"soul breed" aka "fuck bitches"

they just had to be indirect, do they

So much for the Digital Only version of the game.

That is a RIDICULOUS mouse pad.

The Plane Is A Tiger Jan 26, 2010 09:38 PM

I applaud anyone brave enough to actually buy that in a store with a straight face.

SailorDaravon Jan 26, 2010 09:51 PM

I honestly cannot believe that MS is letting them get away with putting that out in the US. Hooooooly shit, titty mousepad. I almost want to buy it just to applaud their bravado.

not only is it going to happen way more frequently than you expect, but there'll be a bunch of 14 year old boys who get their mothers to buy the box set for them.

Imagine how that transaction is going to play out.

Chaotic Jan 26, 2010 10:48 PM

I still can't believe this is only rated as a Teen game. o__o

At this point, they don't NEED their mothers to go and get this.

"Hello, do you have the, uh...'Really Naughty Edition' of Record of Agarest War?"

"...the one with the boobs mousepad and the big pillow case featuring one of the girls, right?"

"...yes."

"I'm sorry, ma'am, but we sold out of that this morning. Flew out of here, actually."

"PHEW! Alright, I guess he won't be getting that. I guess I'll get him Grand Theft Auto IV instead."

They should've tossed in one scene of gratuitous gore to bump it up to an M rating. Then it might have been the top grossing game of the year.

Aksys also released a video demonstrating the creepy things you can do with this stuff.

Sarag Jan 26, 2010 11:24 PM

Fucking video games.

Maybe I'll take up rock climbing instead.

Who am I kidding? This game wasn't even on my radar, and now it's going right up there next to my Ar Tonelicos, just to cement the fact I never want to have another woman near me ever again.

Omnislash124 Jan 26, 2010 11:59 PM

Is this disc based release a 360 only? I would kill for a PS3 version that wasn't PSN.

Oops, sorry, posting from my dupe account.

I was about to say that you really don't, Omni, since Aksys has never made a game that wasn't terrible, but then I saw your av.

Carry on, Soldier.

I bought the EU PS3 version before I even realised this game was for ronery otaku. I haven't tried it yet, and I honestly can't tell if this kind of marketing makes me more or less eager to do so. :tpg:

EU PS3 version is on disc, but supposedly features a localisation which is nowhere near as good as the US version. Different companies each producing their own localisation. Apparently it starts out fine but then falls apart with bad spelling and engrish in later chapters.

I'm going to have to rifle YouTube for actual gameplay before an opinion on the game itself can be conceived, but I am obliged at this juncture to congratulate MS for their apparent possession of intestinal fortitude in this matter.

I gave the game a quick spin today. There are a few little things about it that aren't ideal, but it seems to be your basic SRPG with generic animu plot. There are scantily-clad boobies on display in the first few minutes of the game, and if you're so inclined you can hit the circle button to remove the text boxes and other obstructions for a proper look at the bare flesh.

It would be a massive stretch to describe anything I've seen so far as potential wanking material for teenage boys, mind you. Unless it gets a lot more smutty the further into the game you get, I suspect a lot of people who bought the "naughty version" will be disappointed. Unless they are just so desperate that even the skimpy costumes available here constitute sufficient gratification.

One thing I'd love to know though... why does the music in the cutscenes have to be such poor quality? The music in the rest of the game is fine, why do the cutscenes have to sound like badly encoded MP3s.

If ya got any questions, I'll do my best to answer 'em. Bear in mind though that I only just started the game. If anyone is really desperate to get this game early, I could come to some arrangement about shipping a UK version to America... assuming you'd be willing to scratch my back on any import purchases I need a willing proxy for. PM me if so...

One last thing I'd like to mention. Much to my surprise and pleasure, certain aspects of the battle system remind me of things which are to be found in Final Fantasy Tactics, but not in many of the other SRPGs I've played. Several reasons. If your characters die, you can resurrect them on the battlefield. There's a world map to move about on, with random encounter spots. You get to select which way your character will face after they move... little things.

There are other cool things about the battles as well, like the way you can set up combination attacks with your allies. I've barely begun to discover what you can do, but fortunately there are plenty of tutorials that pop up the first time you discover a new feature in battle.
