Internet speed

I'm getting DSL for my new apartment and I need ATT because that's the only one available. What's a decent speed to get for browsing the Internet and playing online games? I don't really have a clue on how these numbers translate to. I figure 768 Kbps is way too slow. But 3.0 Mbps should be sufficient?

Absolutely. Unless you want to download loads of bluray remuxes/rips, this speed will not disappoint you.

I've got that speed from AT&T at home and have been pretty satisfied with it. The only time I really notice the difference between it and my old university connection is when I'm getting updates from Steam or other large files from really fast servers.

Your internet speed is irrelevant for most online games. It's the latency that matters, and unfortunately there isn't a way to be sure of that before signing up. Sure downloading large updates and whatever takes time on a slow connection, but what you really want to avoid is lag while playing. If there's any way to be sure of getting a nice low-latency I'd love to hear about it.

In general terms, 3.0Mb/s is quite a reasonable speed though. I know it's all the rage now to have 8Mb/s or more but what you're considering won't be too slow for browsing and streaming. Even most torrents can't max out your connection at that speed, so more would be irrelevant. There are the occasional torrents I see running at incredible speeds but I find those to be the exception...
