Forum Idea

So... This will probably be shot down - but what about a forum to just ask questions about.. well jobs, and the like.

Take me for an example - I'm an airline pilot, and if someone has a question that I can answer, I would love to answer it. We could have a sticky where people who were willing would give their job title/whatever, and you know...

Stupid idea probably , but you never know.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Jul 23, 2009 02:41 AM

There have been "ask a <whatever>" in the...sewers, I think it was, but those were joke threads for the most part, like "ask a lesbian" and what not.

I'm sure it would do fine in general discussion, but it might require a bit of a lengthy writeup to let people know what the thread is all about.,

Jessykins Jul 23, 2009 02:48 AM

There was an ask a lesbian thread? Who the fuck made it?

nuttyturnip Jul 23, 2009 07:42 AM

There was a whole string of "Ask a..." threads during one of the crashes (the one before the most recent one). They popped up on Serious Business, and then carried over here briefly when GFF came back up.

Hey Locke, given that planes can take off on auto-pilot, fly on auto-pilot and land on auto-pilot and given that more plane accidents are caused by pilot error than anything else and the US Airforce is pretty much only going to be buying drones from now on, have you considered retraining to prepare yourself for the point in the near future when pilots are obsolete?

nuttyturnip Jul 23, 2009 08:42 AM

We'll still need trained pilots for the resistance, when the machines rise up against us.

Krelian Jul 23, 2009 09:05 AM

We've already got the truth hurts, which is (roughly) the same gimmick in reverse.

If you need your fix for this sort of thing, there's a subreddit that serves the exact purpose you're looking for.

Sarag Jul 23, 2009 10:20 AM

I like the idea but I'd like it better if this wasn't a video game forum, because most of the people who have careers here probably have it in some field within computer engineering or computer science.

So some schmuck will ask what the best way is to sort a linked list in C and you'll have 83947347394739743957395 beardy nerds fighting over algorithms, languages, and why would you even be using a linked list in the first place

Basically a giant sweaty unwashed sausage fest.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Jul 23, 2009 11:23 AM

So what is the best way to sort a linked list in C?

RacinReaver Jul 23, 2009 01:59 PM

By outsourcing to an Indian.

Would you board a flight knowing there was no pilot aboard? I sure as hell wouldn't - even if I wasn't a pilot.

Bigblah Jul 23, 2009 10:43 PM

why are you optimizing prematurely

Gosh, do I hate those generalizations. Not everyone is a 300 lbs turtleneck-and-glasses-wearing nerd around here, okay?

Zergrinch Jul 24, 2009 03:49 AM

But lurker never said "computer engineering" or "computer science" = 300 lbs turtleneck-and-glass-wearing nerd :(

She's in the field too...

Musharraf Jul 24, 2009 04:22 AM

Sorry, it was the only bias I could think of at the moment

Sarag Jul 24, 2009 09:26 AM

Mush in workchat there are about five or six computer people reliably in chat

and another three or four who are in EVERY OTHER FIELD

so...........................................

Additional Spam:
I mean if you want to tell yourself that video game forums are grossly skewed towards people in computing then that's fine but you are lying to yourself

other fields (excepting retail and waitstaff) are generally grossly misrepresented

RacinReaver Jul 24, 2009 11:30 AM

Do I count as computer.

FatsDomino Jul 26, 2009 10:28 AM

you count as science if that makes you happy :rr:

Well, as a classical musician (who SINGS) I should be a homo.
