FTP server trouble

I want to make a FTP server to share my files with a select number of friends, but I can't seem to be able to allow them to connect. I made a username and password, and I disabled any firewall protection that might get in the way, but when ever they connect it just says that the target machine cannot respond. Any suggestions?

If you've made sure that all firewall settings (router and otherwise) are set correctly, make sure that your friends are connecting to the proper port.

scotty Apr 7, 2006 09:26 PM

I told them to connect to port 2100

OnlyJedi Apr 7, 2006 09:38 PM

Do you use a router? You may need to set up port forwarding. It can usually be set up by going to http://192.168.1.1 with a standard web browser (from within your network of course!), though the specifics vary from router to router.

Another thing to try; if you have a second computer on your network, try using that to connect directly to your FTP using the internal IP address; that may shed some light on things.

Make sure that your FTP daemon (whatever it may be) is set to use that port (or listen on that port or whatever you want to call it).

scotty Apr 7, 2006 09:55 PM

I do use a router, and I am set for port 2100, and I cannot use my dads PC because its screwed beyond repair but I can connect to the server myself if that counts

Double Post:
Do I need a dynamic IP, or is a regular one fine?

scotty Apr 9, 2006 06:58 PM

please help i still cant get it to work, and I dont know how to set up port forwarding OnlyJedi. What is that link supposed to do?

OnlyJedi Apr 9, 2006 10:02 PM

Most routers can be configured by pointing your browser to http://192.168.1.1 which is the usual IP address a router takes. But I guess that depends on the brand of router you have, so knowing that would be a big help.

In order to really help, we need to know some things:

1. What FTP server program are you using?
2. What brand of router are you using?
3. Are you sure the FTP server is configured properly (i.e can you access it)?

My first inclination would be to think you need to turn on DMZ for your router. As to how to do that, search for your router's help guide.

scotty Apr 10, 2006 12:24 AM

ok, I am using Bulletproof ftp server
router is D-link model # Dl-524
http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/167...srouter5uv.jpg
If I try to access my own FTP I am able to log in fine
I'll look into this DMZ thing
EDIT: I found out that I have to go to 192.168.0.1 to configure it, now enabled I'll post when I can get my friend to test it out

Basil Apr 10, 2006 01:21 PM

Damn, this is the same router I have. My FTP issues might be solved. I should test it again sometime...

scotty Apr 10, 2006 06:18 PM

nope problem still not solved, any other steps I should take?

Double Post:
can someone try it please?
IP: 192.168.0.101
User: test
no password
Port: 2100

J-Man Apr 11, 2006 12:10 AM

This is all I'm getting:

A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.

Anyone have any ideas?

Wrong IP. That's your computer's IP that's fed to the router ONLY.

What you need is the EXTERNAL IP. The easiest way to figure this out is go to www.whatismyip.com and use the IP it gives you in the FTP connecting info you give out.

As for port forwarding, you can look up how to do it on your router at www.portforward.com

And you don't need a second computer to test, BTW. You just load up an FTP program like WS_FTP or whatever you use to connect to FTPs, type in the info you'd normally hand out and try to connect. If it doesn't connect, you screwed up.

scotty Apr 11, 2006 12:35 AM

oh, then my ip is 207.6.52.231, I can connect to my own server fine with my client, but not with the 207 IP and I have enabled port forwarding already

wtran168 Apr 11, 2006 02:11 AM

See if you can telnet to the port.
telnet IP port

So in your case "telnet 207.6.52.231 2100" and that should give you a session. This wont allow you to do anything with it, but it means that the port is open and accepting connections. To make sure it isn't a firewall issue as well, I sugest to turn it all off just to test. Sometimes (actually a lot for me) you think you've got it right when you haven't.

scotty Apr 11, 2006 12:15 PM

Telnet? I dont understand... I'll check it out when I get home from school

Free.User Apr 11, 2006 10:44 PM

Scotty, open the command promt (Windows sign+R, and then type cmd). In that box type in "telnet 207.6.52.231 2100" without the quotations. Also, if your firewall pops up after you type that in, just allow it to proceed.

It should also be noted that Scotty is on Telus ADSL, which is notorious for such problems (they do such things as port21 blocking, becuase they hate it when their clients create servers).

scotty Apr 12, 2006 12:44 AM

ok I went to cmd, and before I could do anything it said:

"The VTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. CS:054a IP:0102 OP:ff ff 8a c4 8b Choose 'Close' to terminate the application."

and if I choose ignore it closes anyways
oh free.user, I tried to get a VPN server like you recomended trying, but It just installed tagasaurus:( took an hour to remove most of the viruses...

Free.User Apr 12, 2006 12:50 AM

If you want to set up a VPN as an alternative, try Hamachi. It's small, easy, and it works.

As for that command prompt error...well I've never even seen that before.
