Best of the Best, Volume I - Around the World Nice electronic groove here with a vague Asian lit to it. Nice, if not particularly melodic and rather full of nasty vox. Bloody Wolf (TG-16 Game Rip) - Staff Roll Excellent chiptune with a great melody, fine rhythm, and a funky edge to it. Other than being a hair short, there's nothing not to like! Emil Chronicle Online Original Soundtrack Vol.2 ~Door of Neogenesis~ - The thing (hiding in darkness) Suitably dark, but not much as a standalone listen. the seemingly random blasts of weird instruments didn't do much for me. Idinaloq (Game Rip) - Stage 3 Decent synthy stylings. Melody is a shade on the weak side, but the beats are fun enough that it's not such a detriment. KOEI Game Music Works: Yoko Kanno Collections - Distant Mountains and Rivers Has that sort of Tibetian monestary soundscape about it, which is lovely in a very ambient sort of way. Moon Crystal (Game Rip) - Evil Forest (Stage 1) Much as I like chiptunes, this one doesn't do as much for me as a lot of others. When the melody is at its highest level of development just before the loop, it's quite good; there just a lot of rather uninteresting filler in there too. Synaesthete OST - Credits Pure electronic fun with a driving dance beat but also a strong synth melody. Really makes me want to get up and dance; thank your lucky stars you can't see the result. Umineko no Naku Koro ni episode2 - Turn of the golden witch (Game Rip) - Worldend_dominator I really like the first part of this, which builds into an oppressive electronic feel. What comes after isn't as effective (the violin sounds pretty out of place) but the music is interesting throughout. A solid week to mark this anniversary! Here's to Week 200 and ultimate victory :D The Point Spread Credits - 3 pts. Staff Roll - 2 pts. Worldend_dominator - 1 pt. Nomination Composer: Danny Baranowsky Game: Gravity Hook Track Title: The Teaching Robot Additional Information: Looped for your pleasure. |

Trying to vote early this week. It was hard, really. Up to this point I still don't know how I should do distribute teh points.
Best of the Best, Volume I - Around the World: yeah cool beats and stuff, yeah it was nice, you might get a point Bloody Wolf (TG-16 Game Rip) - Staff Roll: doh really, it was short and then on top of it fades, which makes it even shorter (20% shorter I think) Emil Chronicle Online Original Soundtrack Vol.2 ~Door of Neogenesis~ - The thing (hiding in darkness): oeh, this was kinda all over the place, playing hide and seek, more hide than seek? Idinaloq (Game Rip) - Stage 3: boah, I played this as a recommendation of a shmup site in 2003 I think, it's a really short game, only 3 stages. It was hailed as very good, but I disagree, not much of a melody here, but it has a nice steady tension in it, might get some points KOEI Game Music Works: Yoko Kanno Collections - Distant Mountains and Rivers: oh definitely kanno, sounds pretty much like Napple Tale stuff, her music is very cute, calm, but I think this is more Kanno on autopilot, really can someone confirm that it's only 3:00 or so minutes? Foobar is displaying some 16:50 minutes, I might miss some decisive parts? Moon Crystal (Game Rip) - Evil Forest (Stage 1): ahh, uhh, no, kinda ok just Synaesthete OST - Credits: hmm, no really, don't ask me why Umineko no Naku Koro ni episode2 - Turn of the golden witch (Game Rip) - Worldend_dominator: oerks, this reminds me I should nominate some Zts stuff again, I haven't found any game composition by him to be really good, they are just bordering on it. This tracks has some really nice instrumentation and a good sound feeling he usually exhibits, but it's so submarine and scattered too, I already know and listen to it out of force of habit maybe just too much already, sometimes it's good sometimes it's so so. And the violin stuff is just his style, while orion is complaining, probably his most complex composition, he has a few more minor composition for this game, but this one is so fragmented. bleh, but really it's a good track. Point Spread: not really satisfied with it but time calls for compromise 2 Points - Around the World 2 Points - Idinaloq 2 Points - World End Dominator My nomination: year: 2003 oblivion <zts, NUMBER 201> [10] Tsukihime & Girl -doll |
An enjoyable (and very synthy) week.
(3 points) KOEI Game Music Works: Yoko Kanno Collections - Distant Mountains and Rivers: My nomination, and one of the few times recently I've listened to a new soundtrack obscure enough to warrant nomination. The album mentioned is a collection of various Kanno works and this was the best new (read: non-Uncharted Waters) track I heard. Lovely lilt, pleasurably quiet, welcome dollops of piano and violin at the right moments. Not particularly overpowerful or majestic but moving nonetheless. (2 points) Best of the Best, Volume I - Around the World: Another track with asian flavor, this one bolstered by catchy electronic support. (1 points) Umineko no Naku Koro ni episode2 - Turn of the golden witch (Game Rip) - Worldend_dominator: The beginning is pure heaven. Alas, the track develops from there -- and rather disappointingly, I might add, thanks to the violin. Overall it's still a rather intriguing track. As for the rest: Stage 3 has some neat rolling pianos -- can't think of a true negative to say about it. Staff Roll is an upbeat ending theme and dated in a good way. Credits is bouncy but definitely dated in a bad way. Evil Forest feels like they took a Little Nemo track and slowed it down. The thing's worse crime is that its instrument selection, while intended to be gloriously varied, just doesn't sound that great, any of them. |

2 points: Emil Chronicle Online Original Soundtrack Vol.2 ~Door of Neogenesis~ - The thing (hiding in darkness) 1 point: Bloody Wolf (TG-16 Game Rip) - Staff Roll 1 point: Synaesthete OST - Credits |
3 points: KOEI Game Music Works: Yoko Kanno Collections - Distant Mountains and Rivers
2 points: Emil Chronicle Online Original Soundtrack Vol.2 ~Door of Neogenesis~ - The thing (hiding in darkness) 1 point: Best of the Best, Volume I - Around the World Close: Idinaloq (Game Rip) - Stage 3 Not really a memorable field on this one, but the Kanno one was solid even though the piano sample wasn't great. If I could have given that 2 and a half points, I would have! I'll have to check out more of ACE's stuff. |
Best of the Best, Volume I - Around the World is OK, it just lacks that melodic punctuation and punch that makes a track like this attractive and memorable. The combination of sounds is intriguing, but overall they don't mix to create anything extraordinary. OK, passable stuff, but it'll be lucky to get a point.
Bloody Wolf (TG-16 Game Rip) - Staff Roll is a great go-to melodic chiptune listen---ones like this pop up in SotW every now and then, and I like their chipper, bouncy nature every time. Could've used a bit more depth, but that may have detracted from the simplicity that makes the track so affable. Emil Chronicle Online Original Soundtrack Vol.2 ~Door of Neogenesis~ - The thing (hiding in darkness) is a noisy, disjointed (although there is some structural merit to the track as a whole...) juggernaut of sound. Erratic, intimidating, chaotic; but I absolutely love it. I can't really comment on any individual elements to this one because they're kind of indescribable. But in it's entirety, it's a fantastic, albeit ineffable, musical journey through darkness, curiosity and mayhem. Superb instrumental touches, too (the bell things at 2:20, gosh). I like the arpeggio stuff going on in the background of Idinaloq (Game Rip) - Stage 3, but that implicit quality is completely overshadowed by some mundanely explicit electronic bleeps and attempts at melody. Yeah, not too much going on in this piece that I like. I haven't heard this Kanno piece, nor the album from which it is derived; after listening to it, I just get the feeling that KOEI Game Music Works: Yoko Kanno Collections - Distant Mountains and Rivers is pleasant, very easy to listen to, but it lacks that bit of quirkiness or flair that makes most of Kanno's compositions so illuminating. Gorgeous atmosphere, but compositionally it's a bit on the drab side (that violin towards the end really needed to take centre stage throughout to offer some life). The melody in Moon Crystal (Game Rip) - Evil Forest (Stage 1) is nothing to write home about, but I really like the intricate chiptune adornments here and there that give the piece a sense of mystery and trepidation. Overall, I like this one! Not sure what to think of Synaesthete OST - Credits. It's catchy and exciting, but also kind of run-of-the-mill and lame. I think the positives outweigh the negatives however as my overall impression is that this is a decent track. I doubt it'll get any points, though. Umineko no Naku Koro ni episode2 - Turn of the golden witch (Game Rip) - is the behemoth of the week---you know, the track that goes for more than 5 minutes, there's always one. :) I can't say that it's messy, because it isn't; I can't say that it's lacking in fluidity, because it isn't. What I don't like about it is the way it goes about handling its own momentum and melody, changing from instrument to synth rather crudely at times. I've probably contradicted myself right there...but I don't know what it is, this one sounds great, but doesn't do anything for me. Harpsichord's a plus though. HOWL point BELLS point GUITAR 3 points: Emil Chronicle Online Original Soundtrack Vol.2 ~Door of Neogenesis~ - The thing (hiding in darkness) 2 points: Bloody Wolf (TG-16 Game Rip) - Staff Roll 1 point: Moon Crystal (Game Rip) - Evil Forest (Stage 1) 4th: Best of the Best, Volume I - Around the World 5th: KOEI Game Music Works: Yoko Kanno Collections - Distant Mountains and Rivers 6th: Synaesthete OST - Credits 7th: Umineko no Naku Koro ni episode2 - Turn of the golden witch (Game Rip) 8th: Idinaloq (Game Rip) - Stage 3 A good week. No real complaints, since all the tracks made for a decent, or at least interesting, listen. Only a couple of keepers, but that's better than what some weeks produce! |

2 points: Staff Roll
2 points: Around the World 1 point: Stage 3 1 point: Distant Mountains and Rivers Just barely missed: The thing (hiding in darkness), Worldend_dominator Oh wow, someone else on planet Earth has apparently played Idinaloq. Honestly, it's been so long, like 5 years ago back when I played every freeware shooter ever, I barely remember the game or it's music, but Stage 3 is some seriously good work, I might have to revisit it. Great week, unbelievably difficult point spread. The Thing was pretty much awesome except for that... thing (get it) at 1:33-2:06, so it gets points docked for inconsistency. Similar case with Worldend; while the melody is good, the best part is by far the first minute, and it would've been a stronger contender if it simply looped that part over. Evil Forest was in the Best Chiptune Contest, right? It's more than decent, but it cannot match with the rest of this week at all. Around the World is the highlight for me, not only because it's gotten the most playtime, but because the only thing I remember Tom Salta ever doing was that atrotious "jpop" tune from Red Steel, and now I want to check out his entire discography :gonk: EDIT: Did I say atrotious? I meant AMAZING |

2 points: Idinaloq (Game Rip) - Stage 3 1 point: Bloody Wolf (TG-16 Game Rip) - Staff Roll 1 point: KOEI Game Music Works: Yoko Kanno Collections - Distant Mountains and Rivers Thanks for not looping around to the best part again, Staff Roll. While I didn't give the Emil Chronicle Online track any points, I can no longer claim that the sound team is completely incapable of making music with any redeeming qualities. |

Here are my votes. There were some really cool parts in "Worldend" but there were others that didn't work out as well. "Stage 3" was strangely addictive.

*shrugs* I personally didn't really care for "Around the World" but it seems to have had a sweeping victory here. Not my favourite results, these.
