Uploaded noms mean a faster, smoother SotW experience for everyone. Week 166 Nominating The Nominations Queue can be found here. The rules for nominating can be found here. |
Streetwize should be download-only, as it streams slower than its actual speed (and thus lower as well).

Nomination
Album: Luster ~ Music from Briganty PC98ver Track Title: Coda "Briganty" Track Number: 21 Source: This is the only source I've found. Additional Notes: This is from a rare H-game on the PC. Information on it is scarce; I can't even find a release date or composer credit. It's still a catchy track, though. I'll upload it to the database. |

I made the TimeSplitters track download-only also, since the sample rate screws up the playback for that one too.
|
I couldn't seem to connect to the SotW FTP again (what's going on there?) so I've uploaded my nomination HERE.
Also, some points: 3 points: - Flyff (Game Rip) - Theme 6 - Flying 2 Points: - Jazz Jackrabbit 2 (Game Rip) - Streetwize 1 Point: - Boom Blox Original Music - Blocks Up Hoe Down Flying was absolutely fantastic, one of the best tracks I've heard here in weeks. Alexander Brandon is always solid, and I liked the quirkiness of the Boom Blox track. |
beatmaniaIIDX12 HAPPY SKY ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK - [UK PROGRESSIVE] mind the gapThis one's all over the place. Some parts are all Kikuta-esque fusion, whikle others pour on the synths and still others go full-on 80's techno. The individual parts are quite good, but slapped together they just don't mesh.
Boom Blox Original Music - Blocks Up Hoe Down Mark Mothersbaugh is always good in a pinch, though I had no idea he was behind Boom Blox 'til now. He whips up a catchy and infectious country western stomp here, and what it lacks in originality it makes up for with goofy fun. I'll have to check out the rest of this OST. Cybernator (Game Rip) - Till the crack of doom (Final Stage) Pretty good chiptuney synth stylings here. It's maybe not the most remarkable song on the planet, but what it does it does well. Darius Remix - WAR OH! (Boss Scene 1) The gimmicks at the beginning are kind of annoying, but once things even out this should fulfil our voting member's daily requirement for funky Latin fusion. Flyff (Game Rip) - Theme 6 - Flying Exactly what a flying theme calls for: a good, fast-paced melody that soars right along. The piano and synths are especially nice touches. Jazz Jackrabbit 2 (Game Rip) - Streetwize Alex Brandon is another composer who usually comes through, and sure enough he delivers a delicious tracker-influenced song here. The synth lead is excellent, and the rhythm keeps things moving at a jaunty pace. Symphonic Poem Argos no Senshi Original Soundtrack - Geryon Hill Not bad as Japanese symphonic arrangements go, without the usual thin performances or questionable orchestration in evidence. TimeSplitters Future Perfect (Game Rip) - Subway The opening is pretty bad, sounding more like a real subway than anything with a mass of noise (which returns sporadically to interrupt things). The beats that later come in are promising until they're repeated without much alteration 2000 times. Good week, with only one real dud in the lot. The Point Spread Flying - 3 pts. Streetwize - 2 pts. Blocks Up Hoe Down - 1 pt. Nomination Composer: Nobuo Uematsu Album Title: Lost Odyssey Track Title: Theme of Pirates Disc Number: 1 Track Number: 30 Catalog Number: SVWC-7514~5 Year: 2008 EDIT: Good God, Crash and I have the same point distribution, posted within twenty minutes of each other. Surely a sign of the coming apocalypse :D |
I'm not so sure about the eligibility of Lost Odyssey, but I'm not feeling too strongly against it. What does everyone else think?
|
I say definitely not, but then I seem to have a much stricter idea of what SotW should be than most people do. It's my understanding that SotW is meant to highlight more obscure vgm that most people probably haven't heard, and I don't think Lost Odyssey falls into that category.
|
Lost Odyssey? Nobuo Uematsu? Seriously?
Quote:
I did some research for you. Here's the VGMdb entry I made. Composer name is CHEMOOL, a.k.a. Takahiro Yonemura. |
Doesn't seem like Lost Odyssey is going to fly. No big; I'll change it:
Composer: Winifred Phillips Album Title: SimAnimals Track Title: Forest Song (End Credits) Disc Number: 1 Track Number: 19 I suppose this also has the effect of banning Uematsu from SotW completely; maybe we should write that into the rules. |
Why's that? If someone nominates something of his from an obscure older game or a Flash game or something else that not many people know about, that could be fine. You just happened to pick a current major title of his; of course that's going to be too well known.

Nomination:
Track Title: Sun's Tower Album Title: Paper Mario (Game Rip) Composer: Yuka Tsujiyoko Year: 2001 I'll upload it. |

But it doesn't matter. I'll just save that song for the BSC, if we have one this year. |

Ugh, I need more points. I feel like I've heard versions of the Brandon "sound" in this track as well as others, but I'm not going to hold it against him. The other three were very fine representatives of their archetypes (flying, synth, orchestral).
(3 points) Jazz Jackrabbit 2 (Game Rip) - Streetwize (1 point) Cybernator (Game Rip) - Till the crack of doom (Final Stage) (1 point) Flyff (Game Rip) - Theme 6 - Flying (1 point) Symphonic Poem Argos no Senshi Original Soundtrack - Geryon Hill |
<<3 points>> Darius Remix - WAR OH! (Boss Scene 1)
<<2 Points>> Flyff (Game Rip) - Theme 6 - Flying <<1 Point>> Jazz Jackrabbit 2 (Game Rip) - Streetwize |
3 points: Flyff (Gamerip) - Theme 6 - Flying
2 points: Darius Remix - WAR OH! (Boss Scene 1) 1 point: Jazz Jackrabbit 2 (Gamerip) - Streetwize Wow, that Flyff song kicks ass. I wasn't expecting that at all! |
3 pts. - Streetwize
2 pts. - WAR OH! (Boss Scene 1) 1 pt. - [UK PROGRESSIVE] mind the gap A decently enjoyable week, with WAR OH! the only real standout aside from my nom. I love Mothersbaugh's Sims work, and Blocks Up Hoe Down is a well constructed piece, but hoedown type music isn't my thing. I'll have to check out the rest of the Boom Blox soundtrack, though. Flying is very solid for what it is, but it didn't jump out at me as this amazing song like I would have expected based on all the comments. Subway and Till the crack of doom didn't do anything for me. Geryon Hill was close to getting a point. Also, Paper Mario? C'mon, now. |
We've had a few tracks from TTYD and a few of the Mario sports games in the past, so while I am inclined to agree with Drakken re. Paper Mario, I think it would probably be okay.
2 points: beatmaniaIIDX12 HAPPY SKY ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK - [UK PROGRESSIVE] mind the gap 2 points: Cybernator (Game Rip) - Till the crack of doom (Final Stage) 2 points: Darius Remix - WAR OH! (Boss Scene 1) edged out: Blocks Up Hoe Down, Streetwize, Subway Liking this week a lot. I love this WAR OH! arrangement so much. "You know what this needs? A third keyboard solo." "GENIUS!" The Cybernator soundtrack kicks so much ass. Even after all these years, whenever you listen to it, Masanao Akahori still comes over to your house and punches you in the face. That's service and reliability I can trust. Boom Blox is a fantastic game, but I didn't really like the music altogether that much. This one is probably the best track from the game, very fun. |
Quick votes:
(3 points) Cybernator (Game Rip) - Till the crack of doom (Final Stage) I can't shake this feeling that I've heard this somewhere before. Perhaps an arranged version or medley on SotW? In any case, a very solid track. (2 points) beatmaniaIIDX12 HAPPY SKY ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK - [UK PROGRESSIVE] mind the gap (1 point) Darius Remix - WAR OH! (Boss Scene 1) Special mentions to "Geryon Hill" and "Flying". Both were close to getting a point. |
From the Wiki:
"The purpose of this event is to promote the proliferation of quality video game music that is seldom heard amongst the society of VGM fans." Besides a good amount of people hearing it in-game (as Paper Mario was a popular game and one of the only good RPGs on the N64), I'm pretty sure the soundtrack itself is really well known among vgm fans. Thus, not "seldom heard" by any stretch. |

I swear I'm not targeting your nominations. :( |
Aw nuts, the title of the Timesplitters song got changed from "Mind the Gap" to "Subway". There goes 80% of the reason I nommed my song.
Here's votes. 2 points - beatmaniaIIDX12 HAPPY SKY ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK - mind the gap 2 points - TimeSplitters Future Perfect (Game Rip) - Subway 1 point - Cybernator (Game Rip) - Till the crack of doom (Final Stage) 1 point - Darius Remix - WAR OH! (Boss Scene 1) I love songs about the subway system. Also, I'm fine with the Paper Mario song. I own the damn game and I haven't even heard the music from it. But I can see issues against it. |
