'sup dude, welcome to the party. :)

Also here is a nomination, special thanks to DC72 for reminding me with his Plus Alpha nom a few weeks ago that Tsukasa Tawada did another pretty solid arcade shmup soundtrack. Going with a rip because the OST has a noise at the beginning and the stage clear fanfare stuck at the end of the track.

orion_mk3 Feb 11, 2009 01:28 PM

ABSOLUTE AREA -project THUNDER FORCE VI- - Cosmo Babylon The sound of this piece was pretty much in line with the other Thunder Force songs I've heard over the years. The synth and strings runs that dominate in places are nice, and the melody has its moments.

Afrika Original Soundtrack - Safari If I had to describe the music for Afrika, I'd call it "superheroes meet National Geographic." This song takes the game's main theme and puts it through a set of lighthearted yet exhilarating paces. That rambunctious feeling, offset by the more sweeping moments, is a real knockout (though I am of course a little biased).

Metropolis Street Racer (Game Rip) - Passion This trancy mix of club beats was pretty much what I expected after reading the title. The orgasm noises were certainly unique, but it's not enough to save the song from being pretty banal.

Microsoft Puzzle Collection (GBC Game Rip) - Jewel Chase A chiptune by Microsoft? Sure, I'll bite. It's got a nice jazzy swank to it, as befits such a mammoth corporation I guess. My only real complaint would be that it runs somewhat long.

Mushihimesama Futari Original Sound Track - On the Verge of Madness ~ Stage5 A much better take on the same style exhibited in Metropolis Racer, with more drive and an Asian fiddle (I think) instead of orgasm gasps. It's still rather mediocre, but it has its moments.

OutRun 2019 (Game Rip) - Victorious Another chiptune, this time with better synth and a more traditional structure. Has some neat stereo tricks and a decent lead melody.

Rainbow Cotton (Game Rip) - Track 8 This sounds very familiar, though I can't for the life of me place from where. Still, it's pretty good, with some nice synthiness and acoustic guitar parts.

Schrödinger's Cat - Die Katze von Schrödinger Game Soundtrack - MU ~Crisis in the Ancient City~ Crisis If you have a VGM nerd in a room, and there's a 50% chance a poisonously bad piece of music has been released, is the nerd dead, alive, or simultaneously dead and alive? Luckily this music is only weirdly inconsistent, not bad, with a yawn-inducing tribal percussion opening third that leads into a much better section.

Not the best of weeks.

The Point Spread
Safari - 3 pts.
Victorious - 2 pts.
Track 8 - 1 pt.

Nomination

Really digging this week, actually. I only found two of the tracks (Passion and Safari) forgettable. There's not enough points to give, which I don't think has ever actually happened to me.

2 points: Victorious
2 points: Cosmo Babylon
2 points: Track 8

Also, a nomination:
Artist: Konami Sound Team
Game Title: Elebits (Game Rip)
Track Title: Me and My Little War
Track Number: 27

Well, Passion was orgasmic ... but unfortunately for the wrong reasons. Victorious seemed to rip off the opening from Ken's Stage in Street Fighter II. And I could have mistaken Rainbow Cotton for a Wild Arms track had I not known.

Well, I'm reminded of Zero Wing more than anything. Loving it either way. :sega:

Muzza Feb 13, 2009 06:55 PM

Another SotW "Cosmic" track. *shock* Sadly ABSOLUTE AREA -project THUNDER FORCE VI- - Cosmo Babylon isn't one of the good ones. The melodies are seriously lacking in creativity to me, and the drive didn't really get me interested or engaged at all. I can see why some people would like this, but I personally don't.

Aww man I was thinking Afrika Original Soundtrack - Safari would be a, you know, Safari sounding track, with tribal drums and everything. =/ But the music's still pleasant: some nice orchestral flourishes and an infectious adventurous vibe. Not stunning, but it's nice enough for me to keep~

Richard Jacques, eh? I usually love his stuff---and Metropolis Street Racer (Game Rip) - Passion is also pretty good, in a cheesy and silly kind of way. I don't usually like this sort of music, but this one was just weird enough to get me hooked. "ohh" yeah.

Ouch my ears! I didn't like Microsoft Puzzle Collection (GBC Game Rip) - Jewel Chase at all, sorry nom. :eagletear: I think I'll just leave it there, since if I start analysing it I may become mean!

Mushihimesama Futari Original Sound Track - On the Verge of Madness ~ Stage5 is OK. I'm naturally not a fan of traditional Asian music and instrumentation, but this manages to combine it with some slick electronic overtones, making it more palatable. Not much in the way of melody, but the drive is enough to keep me interested throughout.

OutRun 2019 (Game Rip) - Victorious is decent and irksome at the same time. The synth is a bit grating and some of the melodies are annoying as hell, but overall I must say it's a pretty fun listen. Nice drive, especially (hahaha).

Rainbow Cotton (Game Rip) - Track 8 is definitely one of the more creative tracks this week. A great sense of variety and some smooth instrument choices craft a pretty sweet melody. Yeah, a thumbs up from me.

Schrödinger's Cat - Die Katze von Schrödinger Game Soundtrack - MU ~Crisis in the Ancient City~ Crisis was probably the track that most jumped out at me when I listened to the Schrödinger's Cat soundtrack. Awesome, real instrumentation and a lovely transition in feel and style. In fact the transition, with soaring guitars, is my favourite part, but things remain pretty cool from there too. Not as big a fan of the melody as I once was, but it's still extremely fun and danceable. =3

VROOM POINT DRIVE!

6th: Afrika Original Soundtrack - Safari
7th: ABSOLUTE AREA -project THUNDER FORCE VI- - Cosmo Babylon
8th: Microsoft Puzzle Collection (GBC Game Rip) - Jewel Chase

Objectively this week was OK, looking back on my reviews, but I can't help but feel it left a sour taste in my mouth. =/

Not a bad week. Only ones I didn't like too much were the ones I didn't give points.

Also, I'm not sure if the following is a valid nomination, as I've seen the album classified as doujin, but VGMdb lists it as an official album. What's the consensus on this?

Album Title: PSYVARIAR "THE MIX"

EGG MUSIC is mostly a digital download music label, featuring a wide variety of game music. Check out this list of releases, it's frightening. Lots of old games that never received soundtracks, from the MSX, X68K, GB, TG-16, X1, Genesis, honestly I could just name any old system popular in Japan and probably find a release or twenty. They also distribute albums that have been physically released, like Toshiharu Yamanishi's WANDERINGS and the Monster World compilation album.

They've also released a few albums physically, like that there Psyvariar arrange album. Other albums include several soundtracks by Ryu Umemoto, a Super Robot Wars vocal album by Koji Hayama, and the soundtrack to the game Circadia by old school Konami composer Yuji Takenouchi. The Psyvariar album contains an arrangement by one of the composers from the series.

EGG MUSIC is licensed by JASRAC, which is the Japanese copyright collection agency for, among other things, music. So, they're paying royalty fees and doing whatever else they have to do to be legit.

In summary, I consider this an official arrange album from an official music label.

Like this has not been common knowledge for years. You may also be intrigued to know that scientists recently found that the neck pivots, allowing the head and therefore eyes to be directed in different directions, and subsequently stumbled upon the astonishing discovery that the sky is in fact blue, not puce or taupe as had previously been conjectured.

This week was slightly below average. There wasn't anything awful but nothing really leapt out at me as being head and shoulders above the rest of the pack.

2 Points: OutRun 2019 (Game Rip) - Victorious
2 Points: Microsoft Puzzle Collection (GBC Game Rip) - Jewel Chase
1 Point: Rainbow Cotton (Game Rip) - Track 8
1 Point: ABSOLUTE AREA -project THUNDER FORCE VI- - Cosmo Babylon

Next week is the Battle Week, isn't it?

Yup, props to CHz for being ever resourceful. Don't what we'll do without him!

In any case, here are my votes for this week:

(3 points) Mushihimesama Futari Original Sound Track - On the Verge of Madness ~ Stage5

(2 points) Schrödinger's Cat - Die Katze von Schrödinger Game Soundtrack - MU ~Crisis in the Ancient City~ <Crisis>

(1 point) ABSOLUTE AREA -project THUNDER FORCE VI- - Cosmo Babylon

Knew how this was going to go from the moment I prepared the queue for this week, but the stuff I didn't give points to were also generally good. Or at the very least didn't offend me. Anyway I liked this week, this is what I am getting at.

(ohhhh mmmmm)

1 point: On the Verge of Madness ~ Stage5
1 point: Passion
1 point: Safari
1 point: Jewel Chase
Just missed: Cosmo Babylon, Track 8

Look at that, I'm only giving one single point to the Mushihime track. I'll admit, it's not the best Stage 5 theme Namiki has ever done, but it's still worthy of 2 points at least, unless the rest of the week just happens to be sublime. Hey would you look at that.

Too bad Victorious is lame, which is a shame since Outrun 2017 is pretty much the best game ever produced.

THE POWER OF WATER Feb 16, 2009 06:56 PM

Only thing I'm really surprised at is "Cosmo Babylon" placing. Other than that, things seem OK. Ridiculously close week, though.

Drakken Feb 16, 2009 09:42 PM

Drat, I forgot about this (as per usual). Would've pushed Track 8 into 1st place. Ah well. Nice to see Jewel Chase get some late appreciation.
