New face...new artz!

Hey all, I'm somewhat a n00b round these parts. Thanks to JoeCam for hooking me up with GF forums, and CHz for reminding me it exists.

I'm a cartoonist living in VT and studying comics at CCS. My artwork can be found...HERE! I'm open for illustration and comic commissions, and hope to be putting up some more VG-based work soon, including some fan-adaption comics!

FlozaxRollins Feb 1, 2009 05:22 PM

Here's some new art I've put up. They are 2 finished (almost) pages for a Golden Age style Funny Animals comic. (Ala Carl Barks Uncle Scrooge, Donald Duck etc.) When the whole story is finished and up, I'll share more. Enjoy!

I would hope so, I'm a pretty laid back fellow, I hope I get along with a lot of people! :P

Hook me up with a link to his work?

FatsDomino Feb 5, 2009 10:01 AM

Dubs hasn't updated his website in a while and I'm a bit to lazy to do any research beyond that.

Chip And Walter & Time Trouble - Jonathan H. Gray

He's done some of them Archie Sonic comics before and really likes dem Scrooge and Donald Duck comics like you.

Additional Spam:
Ah screw it I went and looked in his journal for ya

He had an amazing collage of Mickey Mouse comic characters as well but that seems to down for some reason.

I don't know exactly what it is about it, but I really like the art style you use in those comics. Feels very warm. It's not overly complex, either, which bothers me in comics.

Good work. Hope to see more.

The style is based on studying 1940s and 50s golden age Funny Animal comics. Ala: Barks' Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck. My editor for this project told me that in his research over the years he's found that 95% of the funny animal comics from the time, SUCK. But that has more to do with the writing than the art. I'm glad you liked it!

Though I never thought I could posibly get into a Children's Book, here now are 2 pages currently in progress for a book I've been working on...and I'm actually excited to be doing them!

Non-photoblue pencils, inked with a #2 brush and a japanese G-nib, on vellum finish bristol board. Color in Photoshop CS3, text laid out in InDesign CS3.

That House of the Dead one... That wouldn't so happen to be for that GoNintendo contest, would it?

Your art is pretty kick ass though. :3:

Thanks btw!

I really like the picture of the woman with the gun.

Araes Mar 7, 2009 08:54 PM

There's a part of me that actually likes the Joel stuff a little more in its simple line art form, prior to coloring. I think that's because the gradient coloring for the skies or large sections of blank space seems a little rushed, and might almost be better as single tone, like comics such as Tintin. Actually, thinking about it, the style of these in general seems very reminiscent of the Tintin series, particularly with the number of outdoor scenes you've shown.

FlozaxRollins Mar 7, 2009 10:41 PM

Time was an enormous factor. Coloring was the LAST thing I did before it was due, so I didn't have too much time to think about it. Gradients are kinda gimicy, and perhaps I would have done better to do a flat tone, like the rest of the illustration.

FlozaxRollins Mar 16, 2009 05:38 PM

Here's a short piece I did recently about the place I live, and a few of the people in it.

Darkk Child Mar 20, 2009 11:43 PM

that chick with the gun is definitely raw

FlozaxRollins Mar 21, 2009 04:43 PM

LOL...the chick with the gun is our town board planner. We had to use 3 of 4 people in town that we interviewed in our comics.

Here's another piece, building on character introduction, and will be a part of a much larger comic which will be my final project for the year. Keep your peepers peeled!

Here's my latest page, done in 4 quick hours in class the other day. Using an original script from Jason Lutes we were assigned first to draw various characters and locations in the story, then each given a page or two to do from the breakdown. This is "Dither" Sod running his horse to death as he flees for his life whilst charged with the delivery of a parcel in the 1860's Arizona desert. Straight up brush, nib and ink on paper over blue-line pencils.
