SaGa 2/Final Fantasy Legend II Remake
I heard about this days ago, but holy crap, I didn't think it was the Legend game I played (I thought I had been playing Legend III).
SaGa2 Not much is known, except that it's a remake for the DS. I'll add more when I hear about it. I remember buying the original on Game Boy eight or nine years ago, just because I wanted a portable RPG. I for one am excited about a remake, just because Legend II provided me with all the appropriate weirdness for a SaGa game-- four races to choose from for all four party members (nothing like having a robot and his mutant friends go look for his human father), weird leveling systems that changed depending on the race, traveling through a person's body and having the subsequent dungeon be a crudely designed human shape. The last SaGa game, Romancing SaGa, turned out fine, and the Last Remnant was great outside of some technical aspects, so I have a lot of faith in this one. |
Pardon my ignorance, but what does Last Remnant have to do with the SaGa series, other than being made by Square-Enix?
|
It's specifically made by the SaGa team, nutty.

Well, there you go then. TLR, from what little I have played so far, bears no resemblance to SaGa titles, so I had no idea it was from the same team.
|
Odd that they're remaking SaGa 2, given how its sales stack up to something like Chrono Trigger or various Final Fantasies. Square-Enix's financial reports don't show SaGa 2 as having been a blip on the radar, but Magic Box shows it as selling just slightly over 1 million copies in Japan.
In any case, this remake certainly comes as a surprise. Nice to see the SaGa team taking a bit more prominence in the company. Additional Spam: Quote:

As much as I loved the second one, I would have preferred the first SaGa to be remade (and not JUST for the wonderswan).

I can't remember playing the original SaGa 2, but so far remakes for the DS are doing pretty good. I'm not regretting buying the DS, it's every RPG fan's best friend!
Although I remember playing that "brown" SaGa game for the PS2. |
Hmm, I did play through FFL2 back on the gameboy, but I remember much preferring its sequel, FFL3. The sequel streamlined a lot of the awkward SaGa stuff into something closer to a Final Fantasy game. Plus, it had a pretty cool time-travel storyline if I remember correctly.
|
Well, this game looks like it'll be streamlined to some degree. A robot is getting healed by a regular spell, and I believe robots originally were not healed at inns or through normal items or magic.
|
I'd much rather have SaGa 1 remade for the DS. I wasn't a huge fan of 2, for various reasons, but I thoroughly enjoyed the hell out of the first game. It would be nice to replay Red's quest once again, or to go through Asellus' quest as well. I miss a lot of the supporting characters like Mei Ling, Rufus, Fuse and Gen also. The stories in 2 seemed lacking compared to the first.

I like 3 the most but then again I never finished either of the first two. Can't wait to hear the music.

If you've played this game before, it was under this title: http://www.coverbrowser.com/image/ga...games/39-1.jpg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SaGa_(series) For more info if you need it. |

Gustav's story began before he was even born, all the way through to his exile, to his return home years later, to his victory over his half-brother in the ensuing civil war, to his unification of various kingdoms, and even beyond his death; the developers taking care to thoroughly explain what happens in the ensuing power vacuum as his former generals begin to turn against each other. Then, quite appropriately, his story finishes with an epic final battle against an impostor and pretender to the throne, which leads to a true successor to Gustav's position. The Battle of South Moundtop is so hard that it actually has its own guide on GameFAQs. Fun stuff. |
Like Jazz, I remember liking Saga 3 better than 2. I think 2 had that system where each weapon had a limited number of uses, and 3 didn't, and that was the one of the main reasons I liked 3 better. I can't stand games where I only have a finite number of uses of a special weapon since I'll never actually use it out of fear of needing it later. :(
Also, 3 had time travel, airships, and cities underwater. |
