Recluse found dead in litter tunnel maze

Quote:

Gordon Stewart, 74, was discovered at his Broughton home after concerned neighbours called the police. Officers found his body in a labyrinth of tunnels he had created from what were described as mountains of hoarded litter.

He used to do his shopping at 8.30pm, he was a bit of a hermit really.

Those crazy Brits, but hey, at least they don't throw the litter on the streets like the Italians do.

They never show pictures of the wretched living conditions.

This is why people don't read newspapers anymore.

There's a great programme on UK tv called "How clean is your house" and another called "A life of grime" where they do in fact show people like this's houses, you should look them up Crash.

People like this are weird though and I'm amazed how often this sort of thing seems to happen. It's not like we have to pay extra to get our rubbish taken away or anything so why horde it?

Zephyrin Jan 8, 2009 09:17 AM

I believe they show one of those shows on TLC or some other station. How Clean is your House, I believe. My mother watches it.

Wouldn't be too hard to catch it.

How clean is your house is more people who never clean up and have a very dirty house, Life of Grime is proper whack jobs like this who store their shit in a box under the bed and have 45 pet cats.

If we're talking about the same program, it seemed to me to be more about OCD hosts scrubbing tile floors repeatedly for 7 hours and then powerwashing it with bleach before setting it on fire.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Jan 8, 2009 10:08 AM

Well yeah, there's that too but the first half of the show is about how shitty their house is in the first place.

I poked it and it made a sad sound Jan 8, 2009 10:21 AM

Ahahhaa YEEEEEEEEA. I remember two Brit birds doing some show (spin off from England, something like that S&M dog woman) where they came to the US and inspected homes for cleanliness and then went all military on tackling the job.

There's reasonable amounts of cleaning and then there's insane amounts.

Meanwhile, who in their right mind would sign up to be on that show KNOWING their home is a disaster and allowing the whole nation to see what a fucking PIG STY they live in?!

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Jan 8, 2009 11:20 AM

Kim and Aggie they're called. I guess at least you get a clean house at the end of it!

Alice Jan 17, 2009 04:37 PM

God, those women are hilarious. Has anyone ever actually watched the show? The big, blonde lady (Kim?) is an absolute riot. The houses are disgusting, though. And in every episode I've ever seen they always seem to do this thing which defies all logic where they scoop up some mucky, slimy putrid-looking sludge out of the bottom of the fridge or from behind the toilet and then they sniff it. I guess to verify that it truly is nasty before they clean it? I'm not really sure.

The story about the hermit is kind of sad, though. Sounds to me like he was one of those hoarders you hear about on Oprah.
