Fighting Game Matchmaking Thread - "EM EM AY, EM EM AY"

Given the imminent release of Street Fighter IV and boost in interest with Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, I figure it'll be worth another shot at finding some competition within GFF's limited fighting game playing populous. If you aren't already familiar with GGPO or 2DF, then here's the gist of it:

GGPO and 2DF are two versions of lagless netcode for playing fighting games with anyone in the world. Barring a beyond terrible connection, you can actually get your ass kicked by folks from Japan in a playable fashion, if your heart so desires, via these two programs. You can find everything you need to know in order to get started at their respective homepages:

GGPO.net - Home - Lag Free, Online Arcade Gaming Goodness

2DF FreePlay

The difference between GGPO and 2DF is quality of netcode, variety, stats, and replays. GGPO offers significantly better netcode than 2DF, but 2DF offers a wider variety of games from SNK and Capcom. Including 2-Player Co-op titles if that tickles your fancy. 2DF is currently the only program/netcode to offer stats and replays, so you can go back and watch previous matches for improvement/gloating. GGPO's Dojo is down indefinitely, but if you're looking to skip stats and replays, your play experience will generally be better on GGPO unless you're playing Street Fighter 3: Third Strike or a game that GGPO doesn't support (in which case, it's impossible have any sort of experience when the game isn't supported).

So what if you already have GGPO or 2DF? Well, that's where this thread comes in. Establishing who plays as well as when they play will be good, for starters. Afterward, you can issue a time where you're available to play and folks who look here will, hopefully, meet you online for a few friendly games. Please post your GGPO and 2DF user names and let's get this rolling.

Good luck getting this one rolling, Rotor.

Don't be afraid guys. Even if you have the slightest interest, but are thinking "I don't want to just fight these guys and lose over and over again." we can support you with some links to some information that can help you get your game up with a little bit of practice. That's the best thing about most 2D fighters. It's pretty easy to get at an intermediate level (which is where I place myself. Rotor might too, but I won't speak for him) without having to put in too much time.

So, if you have any interest in fighting games at all, give it a shot!

As for my info, I pretty much use Manny Biggz universally.

I might look into this if it gets going, but I've never been very good at fighting games. Also, I'm probably gonna be busy with Fallout 3 and CoD WaW after Christmas.

Shenlon Dec 15, 2008 08:28 PM

so are those two applications like Mame but a browser type?
If we can get a few people for this I would love to go a few matches. I only play with a friend of mine in mame and I'm not so great but this would be fun either way.

They are basically emulators that allow you to play the games online via game lobbies. The thing about it is that it has a strong following of well known and respected players from all over the world (along with several other solid players). The roms are quite easy to find too. There's a rom pack over at pirate's bay I think.

I'm in on this as long as none of you get all poopsocky about my total disinterest in your Professional Skillz. Somebody hop on so I don't have to play KOF98 with a bunch of Brazilian pubbies.

Saxypunch on GGPO

Saxypunch on GGPO

I actually have to download GGPO. If you don't mind waiting a little while, I'll be more than happy to jump in on that.

Reading this thread really reminds me just how much I should invest in a PC input device that's not a wheel or flight stick.

Maybe after Christmas is all over and done with I'll just get myself some middle of the line stick or pad or something, but I refuse to get into any of this with my current selection of choices. No racing wheel is gonna let me Houyokusen, so.

Aw, even with a keyboard I'm sure there's plenty of people you could beat.

The CPU just owned me with fucking Chang, for example

A PS3 controller works pretty well. If you want, I'll find that link where I got the drivers for them.

Shenlon Dec 15, 2008 09:35 PM

ok so I got that ggop and set up my roms, luckily all arcade roms are compatibly with arcade emulators.

User name is Shenlon. All I need to do is set up my controller, might have time to a quickie if anyone is on. just name the game =p

Perhaps, but the choice has less to do with how competitive I think I could be and more to do with how frustrated I know I'll get if I'm stuck trying to do anything that's more than just a Lightning Kick.

On the flipside, I don't suppose it could be any more rage inducing than the 360 pad is for HDR. But that's one of the reasons I've basically put it down until I can grab a proper apparatus for all that in February.

Same problem here actually. Downloading it now.

Rotorblade Dec 15, 2008 10:19 PM

I refuse to play Manny in any other KoF than 98, and by now I bet that asshole has learned all the nice moves that make me despise him. Opening is updated. If you're going to jump on 2DF or GGPO, feel free to throw a post in this thread giving an estimated time you'll be on and such.

I'll always have Super Turbo, Manny.

FLASH KICK MORE

Shenlon Dec 16, 2008 08:18 PM

well I might as well say I'm free in the evenings (8pm eastern) if anyone is willing to throw down. Got most of the roms in the rooms list but to be honest our options would be much more open if we use Kaillera netplay ^^

I think you meant to say 2DF.

Rotorblade Dec 16, 2008 09:59 PM

Kaillera netplay offers a few more games, but that shit is negligible given how much of a hassle it would be to coordinate and play with an already ambivalent potential user base.

Ramenbetsu Dec 17, 2008 03:53 AM

I'm down for some fighting. What do you guys regularly play? I just signed up for a 2df account.

Rotorblade Dec 17, 2008 04:36 AM

I mostly play Super Turbo (Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo), though I'll play 3S, Samurai Showdown 2, and KoF 98 if I get the opportunity. I'm assuming your 2DF account is "Tokubetsu?"

Pretty much anything but the SF3 series. Mainly KOF and Mark of the Wolves though.
