Corrupt JPG's?

Just something that's been bothering me for a while. Sometimes, when transferring photos from my phone to my USB storage device, some jpg files become unopenable and "corrupt". I use irfanview to view files, and a message comes up referring to an unknown file header; unknown file format; file not found etc.

This doesn't really bother me that much, as the images I've lost have thankfully been pretty insignificant. Is there any way I can recover these images in the future, though? And can anyone suggest what I can do to prevent this corruption from happening? I doubt it's my USB device, 'cause it's always been pretty reliable and it stores mp3s fine.

Thanks in advance!

Maybe your USB storage device is broken, or the files transferred were incomplete?

Most likely corruption happened during the transfer. Always check after the transfer before deleting the images from your phone.

Do you have samples of the corrupted files? Also, what USB device are you using?

I'm pretty sure I wait until the files have finished transferring every time; I doubt the corruption occurs due to my impatience. But for the future, yeah, I'll copy files over first and check to see if they transfer OK.

Sadly I don't have any samples, but I'll be sure to bump this thread when/if it happens again. As for what USB device I'm using, just a generic USB 2.0 1GB which I got off eBay (I know, I know, shady etc) but it's honestly never caused me any problems before. Perhaps I should look into getting a more trustworthy brand-name USB device?

USB device is still rather vague (there are tons of them). What's the exact model and product type?

MuppeTFuckeR Oct 3, 2008 02:43 PM

He probably means a USB flash Thumb Drive since it's only 1GB.

Muzza Oct 3, 2008 07:47 PM

Well I think the USB device is an Alcor Flash Disk USB Device, since that's one of the devices that appears in my connected USB devices list.

What OS are you using? You could always update your drivers and see if that helps, but you have to know exactly which Alcor device it is. - DriverZone - Free Driver Downloads

So basically you go from phone straight to USB, via a PC? Why not put it on PC first?

Muzza Oct 3, 2008 09:59 PM

Because I am silly :( Oh well, thanks for the links Muppet, I'll be sure to be extra careful in the future anyway!
