Teeth Whitening

Yeah, so I decided to try out those Crest White strips. My teeth aren't exactly perfect, so I figured I can make them a little whiter. I started using them today and holy shit, these things might be the most uncomfortable things I've ever used. You try to put them on your teeth, but I don't think the creators of these strips took into consideration the amount of saliva one would produce when sticking these to your teeth. It's almost impossible to get the bottom teeth strip to actually stay on. Does any one else use these, or has used them.. Run into similar problems?

I poked it and it made a sad sound Apr 2, 2006 08:38 PM

I've played with them, years ago. Back when I worked at the hotel, my associate Mike and I would stick them on our teeth and bet money on how who could go the longest interacting with customers before the customer said something.

I'm a smoker, and I have fucked-up teeth. But I am not about to go out and spend $40 on Crest White Strips so my teeth can be blindly white. I'm happy with what I've got.

IdleChill Apr 2, 2006 08:41 PM

I used them. Yeah, you do generate a lot of saliva, though I've never had that much trouble with keeping the bottom one on it seemed to stick pretty well.

They do work wonders, however, and I'd recommend them. =o

Well, that's a relief because if I went through all this crap for nothing, I'd be pissed.

Spyer Apr 2, 2006 09:35 PM

Worst product ever. I literally choked on one of them. Try sleeping with them on too. HOLY SHIT!

But, I guess it all depends on how good you can have the thing sticking to your teeth.

Maico Apr 2, 2006 09:37 PM

Well, I haven't tried the strips, but I did try that stupid Colgate gel one, where it comes in a little bottle and you brush the gel on. Didn't work out too well for me, neither do all these whitening toothpastes, and now they even got whitening mouth washes. What will they come up with next?

But I have seen an infomercial for some whitening product where I think it's a gel type formula too, but you use this device that shines a blue light onto your teeth that's supposed to activate the chemicals in the gel to make your teeth whiter or something. Looked kinda cool on TV, but hell, you never know with these damn infomercials. Could always just go to the dentist and pay a lot of money. 100% guaranteed or your money back.

You're not supposed to sleep with them, from what I read on comsumer report.

Megalith Apr 2, 2006 09:45 PM

I just use white out.

It tastes aight.

Elixir Apr 2, 2006 09:56 PM

You could always try brushing your teeth.

I heard it works sometimes.

It's recommended that you only use one strip for 30 minutes.

Also, when I used them, I did find them a bit uncomfortable at times, especially if I was sitting up and had the taste of hydrogen peroxide throughout my mouth. And yes they do work, they cost me $10 at the local Walgreens after a $10 mail in rebate. I don't know if the offer still stands, but it beats the $40 Sass says they're going for.

Thanks for the recommendation Idlechill. I may end up trying it out.

^ I lol'd.

I find that brushing teeth often is most effective; two-three times a day works fine. Even as a(n ex-)smoker and coffee drinkers my teeth are relatively clean looking.

Alice Apr 3, 2006 05:29 AM

I've used them, and yes, they do work. The thing I didn't like about them is that a couple of days after starting to use them, my teeth were so sensitive I could hardly stand it.

Also, the bleach must only penetrate the surface, because the extreme whiteness only lasted a couple of months. I have since had them professionally bleached by my dentist, and they stay white for a loooooong time when you use that stuff.

Quoted for truth.

Brushing your teeth a couple of times a day, or extra if you eat something particularly gunky, usually works a treat. My teeth are by no means perfect or the whitest of white, but I'm quite happy with them and people occasionally comment that they're rather white-ish, so I don't do too bad off the brushing method.

Alice Apr 3, 2006 08:14 AM

Well obviously you have to brush your teeth, silly. But I'm an ex-smoker and a big coffee drinker, and brushing your teeth gets them clean, but only gets them so white. If you want dazzling white movie star teeth you have to bleach them.

Just out of curiosity - why would you want "dazzling white movie star teeth?"

Are they, like, the standard of beauty these days?

Aardark Apr 3, 2006 08:31 AM

Overly white teeth are weird. Combined with a tan and the optional hemp necklace, they it just make one looks like a huge fag.

My question exactly. I'm quite happy with normal white-ish teeth thanks. Why would I want to look like someone's painted the insite of my mouth with white emulsion? No thanks, I don't see the need to abide by superficial celebrity 'beauty' standards.

Well, they make you look younger, for one thing. =/

On the same note, at which point do these freakish standards start to drift so far away from....human looking that people will start ignoring the standard?

Already you can see people in the movie business who look so horrific and similar to painted corpses.

But then I suppose beauty IS mutation. Sigh.

Alice, whiter teeth make you look younger? O_O Howso. (This country and the quest for eternal youth. ;_; )

Shadow Drax Apr 3, 2006 08:55 AM

I would like my teeth to be whiter, but not gleaming white, to me that just looks...well, too artificial. Hardly anybody has naturally gleaming white teeth. I'm pretty happy with my teeth just now, so I just use some whitening toothpaste every now and then (for a while at a time obviously, or it would have no effect!)

Alice Apr 3, 2006 08:58 AM

Because people's teeth grow yellower as they get older, obviously. Teenagers, for example, have whiter teeth than someone in their 30s. Yellow teeth make a person look older in the same way that wrinkles do, Sass.

Honestly, I'd rather have wrinkles than yellow teeth, though. I've always had this fixation on teeth, for some reason. It's the first thing I notice about a person.

But bleaching one's own teeth to obtain a "whiter smile" (and, you know, fucking stripping away some of the tooth enamel) seems so silly.

I just don't get this irrational fear of wrinkles, and aged teeth, and all the bad shit people associate with older age. I can't wait for gray hair.

But I am not going to rag on you for being so silly Alice. ^_^ Difference in opinion and lifestyle, suppose. <3

Alice Apr 3, 2006 09:14 AM

I wouldn't expect someone in their 20s to be overly concerned with the effects of aging. When I was your age I didn't worry about it, either. But when you look in the mirror one day and realize that the Grim freaking Reaper is staring back at you, little things like wrinkles and yellow teeth start to become a tad more frightening.

Maybe you'll be one of those women who really doesn't mind getting older...who knows? I wish I was more like that.
