Awesome week. :D It was hard to give out points. :O
(3 points) eXceed 2nd -VAMPIRE REX- (Game Rip) - Welcome to Vahalla (2 points) Shining Theme Music Shiro SAGISU Collection - Inheritors of the Light (1 point) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV - Turtles in Time (SNES Game Rip) - Sewer Surfin' |
Request: After listening to this week's selection, I realized that I had chosen the shorter version of the track I intended to nominate, probably because I was hurried to nominate in time. The album strangely has several versions, identical apart from length, of the same track. Is it possible to replace the track (#02) I currently nominated by accident with the track (#21) I actually intended to nominate? The only difference is that #21 loops twice.
If the answer is yes, #21 is already uploaded to the FTP. Thanks. |
beatmania -
Pretty good ambient piece, which is strange being said about a beatmania track, though I'm unfamiliar with the exact game it's from. DJMax Portable Legacy - Light House A little bit fruity for my usual tastes. The concept is good, but I can't help but think the mixer could've used better synths. Secret of the Solstice (Game Rip) - the spirit of the jotunnheim I love this track. My only gripe is there isn't enough! Shining Theme Music Shiro SAGISU Collection - Inheritors of the Light This song put me right into the seat of a Vegas stage act, for some reason. Very typical sounds, but it's done well. Fun and easy to listen to. Thanks for taking care of the threadmaking this week, CHz! I'm on crappy hotel dialup, and it's the first 'net access I've had in two days. It may also be the last access for days to come, so I'll brave the monstrous load times and vote now.
beatmania HIROSHI WATANABE beat indication - DEEP CLEAR EYES I'm afraid songs like this just all sound the same to me. There's n real hook to set it apart from the pack. DJMax Portable Legacy - Light House A pretty standard tune, it's spiced up with some hilarious samples. Normally I don't like this sort of thing, but the barking dogs, burps, whistles and screams had me laughing, and the song actually felt kind of empty when they went away. eXceed 2nd -VAMPIRE REX- (Game Rip) - Welcome to Vahalla Not a whole lot of meat on this one at first, though it eventually opens up and gets more varied. Once things get moving, it's pretty good. Namco Game Sound Express VOL.16 Attack of the Zolgear - Exia Metropolis Some pretty dull parts, but when it's good, it's quite good. Secret of the Solstice (Game Rip) - the spirit of the jotunnheim This piano-techno fusion hit a lot of the right notes for me. I really like the repeating figures that persist throughout the whole song, and the piano part is pure bliss. It even has a rainstick! Top-notch. Shining Theme Music Shiro SAGISU Collection - Inheritors of the Light This has a really strong start that it never really follows through on. Instead of ramping up to something special, it takes a much easier and cheesier sub-Iwadare route--very disappointing. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV - Turtles in Time (SNES Game Rip) - Sewer Surfin' This entire OST is terrific, with lots of high-energy and fun songs that make good use of the SNES sound chip. I chose this song to put up because it doesn't feature the theme from the cartoon series, which might've raised eligibility questions, but it's always been a favorite. The Granstream Saga Original Sound Track - To Those Who Challenge Fate (Ending A) I hoped for a bit more from Tanaka, who I've always had a soft spot for. But he doesn't deliver anything super-special, though there are some nice flourishes at the beginning. The Point Spread Sewer Surfin' - 3 pts. Spirit of the Jarfignugen - 2 pts. Welcome to Valhalla - 1 pt. |
Next nom:
Album: Bandit Kings of Ancient China Track Title: The Ryousanhaku Suite Track #: 7 Artist (arranger): Norio Maeda Composer: Shinji Kinoshita, Kazumasa Mitsui Year: 1989 Info: VGMDB Comments: A rare arranged track from me. Also my longest nom ever. |
Maybe I should nominate something too.

A perfectly lovely week. I wish I had more points to give out, but I don't want to devalue the strength of the top two selections.
(3 points) Secret of the Solstice (Game Rip) - the spirit of the jotunnheim (2 points) eXceed 2nd -VAMPIRE REX- (Game Rip) - Welcome to Vahalla (1 point) beatmania HIROSHI WATANABE beat indication - DEEP CLEAR EYES Just missed: Inheritors of the Light; Sewer Surfin' |
beatmania HIROSHI WATANABE beat indication - DEEP CLEAR EYES was ultra smooth and slick. All of the little instrumental touches work, and the piece progresses with nice fluidity and elegance. A wonderfully chilling piece of music; I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish.
Well this DJMax Portable Legacy - Light House song was just plain fun. There wasn't really a strong melody that stuck to me, but everything else is bubbly, infectious and enthusiastic. The numerous sound effects work really well with the synthlead, as well. Yup, very entertaining! eXceed 2nd -VAMPIRE REX- (Game Rip) - Welcome to Vahalla had me mildly interesting for the first couple of minutes (it was sort of that "in one ear out the other" situation), but then 1:49 happened and really got me hooked. From there until the end I appreciated the overall funkiness much more. <3 Combo breaker~ Yeah, I didn't enjoy Namco Game Sound Express VOL.16 Attack of the Zolgear - Exia Metropolis too much. Sounded a bit too tiny and repetitive to my ears. The lack of a strong melody also hurt this one. Yeah, I don't think I'll be keeping this one. Yup, sounds like soundTeMP! I've been meaning to check out the fantasy MMORPG music scene, and this Secret of the Solstice (Game Rip) - the spirit of the jotunnheim track just gives me more reason to do so. Gentle, emotional and uplifting in one, this track is a nice, laid back listen. Doesn't wow me (probably because there wasn't a good climax like I was expecting), but it's still great, especially for a 2 minute tune. Shining Theme Music Shiro SAGISU Collection - Inheritors of the Light was another one of those fleeting tracks. It was nice, upbeat and engaging throughout (I remember some cool trumpets~) but once it ended I was left fairly empty and "uhh what"-like. A nice piece of music (if memory serves), but nothing truly stuck to me. Holy cow~! This is some really kickin' music, huh? Yeah, this Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV - Turtles in Time (SNES Game Rip) - Sewer Surfin' is a great little tune. Funky, catchy, bouncy--and it's all complimented by an awesome melody. I like this one lots! Kouhei Tanaka's the man. The Granstream Saga Original Sound Track - To Those Who Challenge Fate (Ending A) has some pretty sweet orchestrations, that's for sure, and the elegant violin really gives the piece a strong voice. The backing strings are also particularly great. Stirring, captivating and appropriately dramatic; just what an ending track should sound like. man, that POINT you're holding looks pretty cool and rounded~ 1 point: beatmania HIROSHI WATANABE beat indication - DEEP CLEAR EYES 1 point: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV - Turtles in Time (SNES Game Rip) - Sewer Surfin' 1 point: DJMax Portable Legacy - Light House 1 point: The Granstream Saga Original Sound Track - To Those Who Challenge Fate (Ending A) 1 point: eXceed 2nd -VAMPIRE REX- (Game Rip) - Welcome to Vahalla 1 point: Secret of the Solstice (Game Rip) - the spirit of the jotunnheim 7th: Shining Theme Music Shiro SAGISU Collection - Inheritors of the Light 8th: Namco Game Sound Express VOL.16 Attack of the Zolgear - Exia Metropolis Very cool week, a six-point-spread was the only way to go about it. Only a couple I could do without, the rest have earned a nice spot on my hard drive~~ |
This week gets a slightly biased point spread, but it's okay because it's for HIROSHI GOD DAMN WATANABE

2 Points: Shining Theme Music Shiro SAGISU Collection - Inheritors of the Light 1 Point: Secret of the Solstice (Game Rip) - the spirit of the jotunnheim So close, sorry: Sewer Surfin'; Exia Metropolis This was a really solid week. I could've split the points more, I'm sure, but the three I chose were definitely the most interesting for me. The others were definitely good, just not quite so captivatingly. |
1 Point - beatmania HIROSHI WATANABE beat indication - DEEP CLEAR EYES
2 Points - DJMax Portable Legacy - Light House 1 Point - Secret of the Solstice (Game Rip) - the spirit of the jotunnheim 2 Points - Shining Theme Music Shiro SAGISU Collection - Inheritors of the Light |
This was a pretty good week with a number of exceptional tracks. These were the standouts for me though.
3 points: beatmania HIROSHI WATANABE beat indication - DEEP CLEAR EYES 2 points: DJMax Portable Legacy - Light House 1 point: The Granstream Saga Original Sound Track - To Those Who Challenge Fate (Ending A) Just missed: Sewer Sufin', Inheritors of the Light I would have liked to give an extra point to Ending A, but I've actually seen the ending. |
Nomination!

beatmania HIROSHI WATANABE beat indication - DEEP CLEAR EYES
Smooth drum and bass + new age that I definitely enjoyed. Not so elaborated melody-wise, but the mood is good enough to excuse this. DJMax Portable Legacy - Light House Hyperactive for sure! There are some nice parts, and overall it's good for its style, but ultimately, it didn't have much impact on me. eXceed 2nd -VAMPIRE REX- (Game Rip) - Welcome to Vahalla Was a bit generic in the beginning, which almost made me loose faith in it, but then the synth lines got awesome and they won me over. Kind of a modern sounding retro-ish piece. Namco Game Sound Express VOL.16 Attack of the Zolgear - Exia Metropolis It's OK, but too "stock" and simple for me to start caring about it more than other tunes. Secret of the Solstice (Game Rip) - the spirit of the jotunnheim I like the sound and style quite a lot, but it somehow ends a little bit too soon in my opinion. Shining Theme Music Shiro SAGISU Collection - Inheritors of the Light The medieval introduction transforms into disco, which was unexpected! It's a pretty good piece, although I'm still not entierly certain how to judge it. I liked it a tad less than some other songs this week, but better than some others. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV - Turtles in Time (SNES Game Rip) - Sewer Surfin' Extremely energetic and quirky! In most occasions, Konami is synonym with "kickass VGM", and it's the case here. A bit short though, yet it follows the condensed chiptune format. And also, I wouldn't consider TMNTIV as being very obscure. However, I still prefer listening to a great song I'm somewhat familiar with rather than an unknown piece of crap. The Granstream Saga Original Sound Track - To Those Who Challenge Fate (Ending A) The door to the throne room bursts open! The Evil One is almost in grasp of the cup of destiny that is said to have the power to control fate. Almost everybody believed in this imaginary concept except Mata, a slave imprisoned in the dungeon. "STOP!" shouts the Hero. Ignoring this command, the Prince of Darkness wraps his left hand around the cup, an evil grin on his face. And then... nothing happens. "WHAT'S THAT? WHY ISN'T IT WORKING?" screamed the demon. An arrow aimed at the Evil One's head, a soft whisper comes out of the young man's mouth as he let the piercing object meet its destination: "Fate..." Realizing there was actually no real Earth-shattering or apocalyptic menace, the Hero and his friends feel somewhat funny after having spent countless hours going through deadly dungeons and killing tough monsters to save the world. "Oh well, better that than a bad ending, eh?" The Hero's girlfriend takes his hand, "You bet!" Now that peace is back in the kingdom, the heroes can finally rest. They take a nap for about a minute, then get up and smile while letters appear on the screen: "The End (Ending A)". Maybe that's why I'm having some difficulties enjoying some game music out of context... It's OK for what it's for, but not a 3-pointer here and now. ------------------ (2 points) beatmania HIROSHI WATANABE beat indication - DEEP CLEAR EYES (2 points) eXceed 2nd -VAMPIRE REX- (Game Rip) - Welcome to Vahalla (1 point) Secret of the Solstice (Game Rip) - the spirit of the jotunnheim (1 point) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV - Turtles in Time (SNES Game Rip) - Sewer Surfin' |
Some solid tracks in a pretty neat week. Really like the atompshere in my top two picks.

My next nomination:
Artist: Masao.Fukatsu Game: The Candystore's Manager 駄菓子屋 James Test Ver 0.10 (2002/6/23) Track: One night in... (Stage 1) Year: 2002 Sources: Spoiler:
Info: This is an abandoned freeware shooter with only one stage, though music and graphics for stage 2 exist. The music is original, and in MIDI format; I'll convert into MP3 and upload it shortly. A shame this game never got finished, because it has the best story of any game ever: Spoiler:

Darn. I forgot to vote >.<. My votes wouldn't have changed anything either way. It was a 1, 2, 3 as it is now.
|
Yup, very good result. Would have liked to have seen Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles snatch a position, but it's still good~
|
I dunno, the first place finisher took me by surprise. It was an okay track to me but I didn't foresee it placing. I thought Valhalla was going to claim gold, followed by TMNT or Inheritors of the Light.
