Shitty covers of good songs.

Hey all, I just heard Marilyn Manson's cover of 'Personal Jesus', by Depeche Mode. That guy has covered at least a few good songs and made them complete ass. Including 'Sweet Dreams'. Disturbed did a pretty awful cover of "Land of Confusion'. Am I the only person who is sick of these terrible bands / singers covering classic songs?

WolfDemon Jul 8, 2008 09:32 PM

I liked Disturbed's "Land of Confusion." :(

I think the absolute worst covers I've ever heard were My Chemical Romance's "Under Pressure" and Killswitch Engage's "Holy Diver."

Shinedowns "Simple Man" was complete desecration

That one was really not too shabby. Their original work is about 5 time worse.

'Smooth Criminal' by Alien Ant Farm, I can almost listen to it, but when compared to MJ's, it is dog shit.

To see the epic win of failure in this category (though some people might get a kick out of it), look up Rolf Harris doing a cover of Bohemian Rhapsody. I shit you not that crap exists.

Midna Aug 4, 2008 06:22 AM

Sorry for the bumpzilla, but Cake's cover of "War Pigs" is just bad. I couldn't even listen to the entire song because it was so uncomfortable to listen to. Gave me flashbacks of watching the school talent show in 6th grade and cringing as a girl sang "Waiting for a Girl Like You" so off-key that some of the teachers were laughing.

Krelian Aug 4, 2008 06:29 AM

Moonsorrow's version of Metallica's "For Whom The Bell Tolls" is fucking terrible in a I'll-listen-to-it-and-laugh-with-a-friend way.

In Flames' version of Genesis' "Land of Confusion", on the other hand, is a fucking godawful rendition of a great song that makes me seethe. Disturbed's version is likewise pathetic.

Also, Northern Kings (Scandinavian power metal supergroup - no shit it's going to be bad) recorded a whole album of pop covers, butchering Radiohead, Phil Collins, Mister Mister and others in one fell swoop.

Hell, most metal covers of other songs are bloody awful. I did a few entries of these last year; don't know if they're still hosted though. Injecting growls and whatnot into Madonna is a goddamned cringeworthy affair.

The 80s fucks who decided to cover BOTH "Baby I Love Your Way" and "Free Bird" in ONE song could possibly be tops on this list.

Misogynyst Gynecologist Aug 4, 2008 10:14 AM

Was it Limp Bizkit or Uncle Cracker who covered "Behind Blue Eyes"?

The Atari's cover of Don Henley's "Boys Of Summer".

The Duff sisters cover of "Our Lips Are Sealed" (Not a great song to begin with but still awful cover)

Jessica Simpson's cover of "Red, Red Wine" (Or whenever she sings at all)

Gwen Steffani's cover of Talk Talk's "Its My Life"

Puffy Daddy and all involved (yes, even Sting) for "I'll Be Missing You"

khan0plinger Aug 9, 2008 11:44 PM

Fallout Boy's cover of Michael Jackson's "Beat it" is pretty bad.

Zephyrin Aug 12, 2008 09:07 AM

Heh, I was going to mention Northern Kings. The worst cover on that album is Journey's Don't Stop Believin'.
As far as some of the others mentioned, I like Disturbed's covers. Shout 2000 is pretty good. They covered Land of Confusion and did a pretty good job, but In Flames tried to death metal it up and did horribly.

AAA's Smooth Criminal sucks because, well, the original song is fucking awful all by itself.

Fallout Boy is pretty bad. Even their name is stupid.

Rotorblade Aug 12, 2008 10:08 AM

I don't know who actually did the cover, but there's a JC Penny commercial around that has a terrible cover of "Don't You (Forget About Me)."

To go in a slightly different direction, the song that made Natalie Imbruglia famous {at least for a day or two}, Torn, is a terrible cover of an excellent song originally by Ednaswap. Too bad no one has ever heard of Ednaswap, or even know that Natalie Imbruglia was doing a cover of that song.

Excellent suggestion. I actually have all of Ednaswap's albums (except their LP "Chicken") and their redux band attempt called Annetenna.

At least we can't say LeHah doesn't have the power to make people cry.

;_;

Dopefish Aug 13, 2008 09:55 AM

In the same vein as LeHah's Kids, Inc. videos, Kidz Bop has sufficiently ruined both good and bad songs (mostly bad songs) by allowing kids to sing them. There should be a law forbidding children from singing anything that isn't a children's song or a holiday song.

Nonsense.
