Fucking birds!

So, after a year of neglect, we've had numerous pigeons roost on our balcony, trash accumulate, etc... But we've finally cleaned it all up!

But the pigeons are still coming back... We've tried killing them off with paintballs and pellet rifles, but the stupid birds keep deciding to come to our balcony. Is there a more effective (and if possible, just as satisfying) way to solve this problem?

I've seen plastic owls in awnings and stuff. Maybe that can help.

One of my classmates tried that, but the problem is, that even with the utter stupidity of the birds, they get used to seeing a perched owl in the same spot that doesn't move :(

Poison some food that you place out on the balcony.
They will come in hordes, and die in hordes. >=-D

but see, the beauty of the paintballs/pellets were that we'd hit the birds on the balcony, and they'd either be too stunned, or too wounded to start flying before falling the 14 stories to the ground.

And the beauty of poisoned food is that you don't have to wait around for the birds to come. They will come eagerly to their deaths, rather than having it brought to them.

Just shoot them. At least they're not crows.

I recall about 5 or 6 years ago the crow population....going extinct.

But then you have to deal with the bird carcasses.

makura Apr 1, 2006 05:09 PM

What do you think of some sort of wire netting? It might be ugly, but the pigeons won't be able to land there. Maybe you can take it down when you need to use balcony.

Locke Apr 1, 2006 05:10 PM

Too much work - plus we'll be using the balcony quite often from now on.

I agree with the poison.

makura Apr 1, 2006 05:23 PM

I read that some people use cd's and pinwheels to reflect light to discomfort the pigeons to fly away. Or something that makes loud noise at times.

Go for the pinwheels, lots of them.

I remember seeing in a King of the Hill episode to apply to the surface they land on, some kind of gooey substance, since pigeons apparently hate "slimy things." I don't think you'd want to some goo on your balcony though.

makura Apr 2, 2006 04:43 AM

Their feathers might stick to the substance. Pinwheels I say! Or get a cat or dog to chase them away

I've heard of a product which is basically electrified metal strips that you put on the ************************************************** ************************************************** ************************************************** ************************************************** ************************************************** ************************************************** *******************************
(sorry, my rat decided to help me type)

Metal strips which you put on the rail of the balcony and they're electrified. The pigeons won't land on 'em anymore.

You ought to be able to turn 'em off when you have company up there too as I imagine they'd plug into a typical outdoor electrical socket.
