Aww, what the hell. Of all of the Insector X tracks, we get "Oriental Fear"; the most boring one. I was actually considering nominating "Tropic Gym" or "Skylight Tune" sometime in the near future, but I guess I'll hold off for a while.

Hey, I've also got a nomination question. As you may remember, there was a track from FantaVision called Moony in last year's BSC. It made it to the third round, so by convention it wouldn't be eligible for SotW. The track I have in mind is an arrangement of it from the sequel, Futari no FantaVision. They're pretty similar in structure and feel and have some of the same elements (beep-boop, that chime riff, the string melody), although the elements are used differently and there's new material (some EP, new perc, and bass).

Thoughts? I can post them both up if people want to compare them.

Muzza Jun 2, 2008 11:51 PM

^^ I know both of the tracks in question (<3 both Fantavision soundtracks), and I'd have to say they're different enough. So, I personally see no problem with you nominating it~!

orion_mk3 Jun 3, 2008 02:25 PM

I can't remember the track you mention for the life of me, CHz, so it must not have made much of an impression. You and Muzza saying they're different is enough for me.

Incidentally, I have an interesting issue. I've recently discovered a composer's site that has some great music samples on it, but 90% of them are completely untagged, so I have no way of knowing if they're tracks from his games or original works. Is that kind of shruggery adequete?

Which composer are we talking about here? I'm sure some people here could help identify the tracks.

Muzza Jun 6, 2008 04:34 AM

I had such a difficult time choosing which track to nominate from the fantastic Unknown Origin album. Atelier Elie Unknown Origin - The Tale of the Seagull That Couldn't Fly ended up being my pick, and it's probably my favourite by a margin. Trademark gust bounciness, a spectacular melody and some refreshing sound samples combine to make one of my favourite Atelier songs ever (and that says a lot). If that flourish at 1:42 doesn't hook you, then I don't know what will. <3

Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex -Hunter's Territory- Prototype Sound Package The Link - PRAYER ~Praying~ (REMIX ver) essentially only has two prominent elements: the guitar and angelic vocals. Not a bad mix, I must say (and that guitar line surprisingly didn't grate on me), but I just think 6 minutes is waay too long. Were this shortened to 3 minutes, I would have happily given it a vote, but I almost fell asleep here. >_>

I've been thinking of looking into this soundtrack, so Guwange ESP Ra.De. Original Soundtrack - [Underworld Cherry Blossoms] - Stage 3 will be a good test to see whether I should spring into OST-acquiring action. I've gotta say I'm impressed; the lush Asian soundscape is really vivid and full of colour, and the evil giggles at the start of each loop are a fitting touch. Yeah, if it's all this classy I'll definitely be looking into it.

Insector X - ORIENTAL FEAR (Pyramid)'s attached cover art frightens me. >_<" Anywho; this is a pretty good piece with a nice, cohesive feel to it. I'm kind of umm-ing and ahh-ing over whether to like this track or not, 'cause it borders on monotony, but the use of some tuned percussion licks sold it. The steel drums and bass solo was also a really cool touch. Conclusion: a bit boring, but the varied, exciting instrumentation keeps it above the water (or in this case, sand).

Fleeting rock. That's all Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection - Premonition is more me, sadly. It's nice while it lasts, with some sweet guitarin' and a fluid progression. But there's no hook. No "wow!" factor. I'm just left feeling a bit empty inside after listening. A decent listen while it lasted, though.

PinkSweets ~After Ibara~ Original Sound Track - Sorelle forti -Strongest Sisters- Stage3 is some nice danceable techno. Entertaining from the get-go, it maintains a respectable level of energy and enthusiasm, and really gets my knocking my head. :rabite: Very point-worthy, methinks.

Snatcher & Policenauts for the win. It's so severely under appreciated it hurts. :( Policenauts F/N - MY LOVE is a great, high-quality arrangement that you don't see enough of. The instrumentation is crisp, and the subtle melodies shine through the tangible developments. Perhaps a point will go this way (I can think of much better from the F/N album, though) (Can't wait for the Policenauts translation!)

The Nightmare of Druaga ~ Mysterious Dungeon - Promotion Medley (not used) doesn't really stand above the overpopulated crowd of heroic/militaristic orchestration, for me. The pizzicato string, harpsichord interlude halfway through is definitely the highlight, and is actually an excellent section that I might revisit again. But on the whole, it didn't interest me enough.

ohay it's a POINT

3 points: Atelier Elie Unknown Origin - The Tale of the Seagull That Couldn't Fly
2 points: PinkSweets ~After Ibara~ Original Sound Track - Sorelle forti -Strongest Sisters- Stage3

OK week without being phenomenal or anything.

Chuckster Jun 6, 2008 03:40 PM

Sure, I'll vote.

There's a clear separation from the top three to the rest, though everything else wasn't half bad.

Thanks to Darkcomet72, I noticed an error I made in this week's track information. The artist of The Nightmare of Druaga ~ Mysterious Dungeon - Promotion Medley (not used) should be Takayuki Aihara, not Masashi Yano. If you've downloaded the track already, either grab the updated version I just uploaded or change the tags on your own.

My next nom:

Composer: Y. Suzuki
Game: Operation Logic Bomb (SNES rip)
Track: that path right after area B and before the final boss (Stage 4 on the SPC set)
Track #: 11 on the SPC set
Year: 1993
Source: Game profile: Operation Logic Bomb ~ SNESmusic.org
Additional info: snesmusic.org lists the track in question as "Stage 4" which is inaccurate, as the game only has two main stages: Areas A and B. Between them is a short transition stage where "Stage 2" plays, and "Stage 4" plays on the second transition stage between B and the final boss. I am unsure what to rename it though, and wouldn't mind if it's kept as Stage 4, I just wanted to point it out.

surasshu Jun 7, 2008 07:07 PM

Not the worst week ever, but Cave just bullied out the other ones, so all I really had to think about is where to vote the leftover point.

4 points 3 points - PinkSweets ~After Ibara~ Original Sound Track - Sorelle forti -Strongest Sisters- Stage3
2 points - Guwange ESP Ra.De. Original Soundtrack - [Underworld Cherry Blossoms] - Stage 3
1 point - Policenauts F/N - MY LOVE

... Some stuff went wrong--that'll teach me not to do this stuff when I'm drunk.

EDIT: Reviews:
PinkSweets is one of my all-time favorite soundtracks ever, so I could nominate almost anything from it and it would garner 3 points from me. This track in particular is really awesome, from start to finish it is a no-nonsense track.
Guwange is another incredible soundtrack, and an awesome game (I never played PinkSweets but it looks good). This track is really great in-game since it's such a change of pace, so maybe I'm slightly biased. But the unique atmosphere and the subtle leads really do it for me.
Policenauts is a game I really want to play, and if this song is any indication, I should download the soundtrack as well. Great mellow track, no comparison with PinkSweets or Guwange in my opinion, but solid stuff.

Of the other tracks, GitS' Prayer impressed me a lot too. It's loud and aggressive, and in another bracket I would've given it a point or two. I only gave Policenauts a point over it cause that's just the kind of mood I'm in at the moment. The rest wasn't terrible but I couldn't really get into it.

It's Sean Beeson, late of Eternity's Child. I'd wager few have ever even heard of him :) I'd put an EC track up if the game weren't *brand new* and the waiting period issue still on the table.

In other news:
Atelier Elie Unknown Origin - The Tale of the Seagull That Couldn't Fly Stylistically, this reminds me very much of Okage: Shadow King (the good parts); it's got a pleasing melody and a healthy quirk count. Very nice!

Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex -Hunter's Territory- Prototype Sound Package The Link - PRAYER ~Praying~ (REMIX ver) I guess this is about what I'd expect a game based on a sci-fi anime to sound like. The vocals are actually the best part of the track, lending it a jazzy, vaguely Bondian feel. It gets a bit much at the end--the track is definitely bloated in terms of length.

Guwange ESP Ra.De. Original Soundtrack - [Underworld Cherry Blossoms] - Stage 3 Atmospheric to be sure, with a nice overall sound but a lack of real staying power. And those laughing child vocals? Über-creepy.

Insector X - ORIENTAL FEAR (Pyramid) It gets the "Egyptian" sound right, but there's not a whole lot to the track besides some vaguely Gyptian chords and a lot of drum loops. Pretty desolate.

Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection - Premonition I can't tell you how tempting it is to make a "music to smack your balls around to" crack and compare the track to porno music. Frankly, it's just a thoroughly average "rock without screamy vocals" song.

PinkSweets ~After Ibara~ Original Sound Track - Sorelle forti -Strongest Sisters- Stage3 Certainly as hyper as one expects from PinkSweets. The constant piercing tone of the synth and frantic layering of trance loops eventually gave me a headache.

Policenauts F/N - MY LOVE If any track this week sounds like porno music, this is it :) There's nothing really remarkable about it; your standard easy listening music.

The Nightmare of Druaga ~ Mysterious Dungeon - Promotion Medley (not used)
More of an overture than anything else; it's got a decent enough progression, but the tinny synth and lack of any really outstanding melody handicap it somewhat. The lighter, plucked string section is a highlight, though.

First place was easy; it's second and third that were a bit challenging this time.

The Point Spread
Atelier Elie - 3 pts.
GITS SAC - 1 pt.
Guwange - 1 pt.
Nightmare of Druaga - 1 pt.

3 pts. - Premonition - It's funny, I first heard this a couple months ago, thought it was OK, and that was that. I stumbled upon it again last month and thought, "Hey, this is pretty good, funny that it comes from a budget pinball game." The more I listened to it, the more it grew on me, to the point where I actually nominated it for BSC '08. It's not amazing nor the best vg rock I've heard, but it's definitely an enjoyable song.
2 pts. - MY LOVE - Very solid. Not surprising considering it's from an arranged Policenauts album. Would have gotten 3 points had my nom not been here.
1 pt. - ORIENTAL FEAR - Lots of cool little things going on here.

The Tale of the Seagull actually didn't do anything for me, which I thought was kind of odd considering it's an Atelier track. Prayer and Underworld Cherry Blossoms were underwhelming. Also, Sorelle is getting way too many points.

Wow, talk about a track nickel-and-diming its way to victory. I never saw that one coming. I expected Policenauts to take it this week.

(Didn't see the third place winner coming either.)

THE POWER OF WATER Jun 9, 2008 12:17 AM

It's not really nickel-and-diming if, out of sixteen voters, seven people gave it 2 points and one gave it a 3. Eight multipoint votes is more than any other track got. :(

I didn't think PRAYER could pull out a place this week either, but I'm quite pleasantly surprised that it did. Excellent, varied material this week.
