Jade's Game 2, sometimes incorrectly referred as Beyond Good & Evil 2

The best Zelda game that wasn't a Zelda game is getting a sequel!
N-Europe: News: Beyond Good & Evil 2 In Development
Another Sauce, but French!

I had just whacked off but immediately sprung another when I read the headline.

The government lies! Join the rebellion!

HOLY LIVING FUCK ...!

*Ahem* I am excited to hear the development of a sequel to the game Beyond Good and Evil is in production.
I wonder if they will go multi-system or stick with one platform?

RABicle May 15, 2008 01:40 PM

Oh it'd have to go multiplatform.

When you factor in that the previous game never made any money and Ubisoft will only okay this game if it's on everything from PS2 to Wii to PC to Xbox 360 and hope that somehwere it might find an audience (probably wont.)

it's crazy. This is the best game I ever played on my PS2, I borrowed it off a housemate, and on a whim like two days ago found a PAL Gamecube copy on ebay and bought it instantly. AND NOW THIS!

map car man words telling me to do things May 15, 2008 01:43 PM

This is lovely news. It's always great to hear support for a sequel even when the original wasn't a success. All the more confidense in quality over calculated profits.

I played the original on GC and loved it to bits. Hopefully Ancel isn't forced to dump the unsolved story threads out of pressure to make a fresh start with the series.

Wow. I should just cut the bullshit and buy the PS2 original while it's still around. Gamestop is selling that game for around $8 used.

Dark Nation May 15, 2008 01:52 PM

That reminds me, now that news of a sequel has been reveled, I remember I have the PC Version sitting around here somewhere, I never got to finish it thanks to my graphics card shitting on me due to Oblivion, ... and I was so far too.. One reason I never reinstalled is thatI'm a little paranoid about it messing up on me again, plus I'm kinda low on HD space.

So, should I go find a copy at Gamestop? ... and PS2 or GC version if I go?

RABicle May 15, 2008 02:02 PM

Face it. The GCN controller is just more comfortable than the Dual Shock. Get it on GCN. I've heard Xbox copies are the cheapest hough cos lol, far to cerebal for Halo crowd resulted in no sales.
Also the PC copy had a showstopper bug in it if I recall. A friend of mine was complaining about it to me. I told her to just get the patch but she'd already lost interest.

Also lol: Gechmir can stop waiting.

The GC pad works better, at least for me it did. I also played Sands of Time and Spartan: Total Warrior on the GC for this reason (not to mention Killer7 and RE4).

orion_mk3 May 15, 2008 02:36 PM

Terrific news! And I'd heard that there would never ever be a sequel due to the original's inexplicably bad sales performance. It really needs one, too, as there were a tong of plot threads left dangling.

While seemingly impossible but great things are happening to the franchise, how about an OST? I hope they bring back the same sound and cast in the sequel.

Inhert May 15, 2008 02:46 PM

OH YES!!! it's been so long since i wanted a sequel of this game!

and I guess the fact they ubisoft just release the game on steam wasn't random XD

I'm currently replaying the first one, god this game is so good!

can't wait for the sequel!

Gechmir May 15, 2008 03:03 PM

I just came

:tpg: Oh dear lord...

Totally need to buy a copy of this and Psychonauts. I got to, like, the VERY end of BG&E twice and both times, my computer shitcanned.

My PS2 shitcanned whilst doing ICO, coincidentally. It seems that my hardware can't live up to awesomeness specs of this caliber :argh: Best news I've heard in weeks. Thank you, Rab <3

Double postin' here~

I made a topic on this over at SomethingAwful, and someone chimed in saying that Ubisoft has a convention at the end of this month ("Ubidays". How bland) where I suppose they make their upcoming release announcements. Either it'll be announced, or Ancel is raising a storm over this (a PR storm regarding the game) so Ubi will be forced to officially greenlight it.

Seems like he was overstepped on Rayman for the Wii (according to an article from ~2 months back), but Ubi said to make up for it, he could do a project of his choosing. He's been chugging on this for a year, and that matches up in the timeline, doesn't it?

Beyond Good & Evil 2: Beyond Good & Evil 2 Is For PS3, 360

What the? WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS? As if tasteless PS3 and Xbox360 owners will buy a single copy of this game. This is totally fucked. Much like any third party game of worth, the original game sold better on Cube than the other platforms.

Dopefish May 16, 2008 09:03 AM

This game better be ported to PC or there WILL be hell to pay.

YOU HEAR ME, UBISOFT? HELL. TO. PAY.

The game hasn't even been approved by Ubisoft yet, it's still pretty early days, so there is no ruling out a PC or Wii port at this stage. But if it turns out that the game is only going to be for 360 and PS3, that pretty much rules out the thrid one ever seeing the light of day.

:( I have an Xbox 360

I know what you mean though RAB, its all the regular people with the 360 who would just gloss over the game and not even consider getting it. Alas it looks like it'll be up to the Atlus crowd to support the game for making the game a proper trilogy.

Oh and just to pour salt on wounds, I came across this mockup many moons ago:

Yeah, because Wii owners have proved that they're SO GREAT AT BUYING ADVENTURE TITLES, I FUCKING FORGOT. Okami's done what, 90,000?

People EVERYWHERE are gonna gloss over this, regardless. Unless there's a marketing miracle, it's gonna be just as fucked. To go on about sales on the Cube being better than the other two, is like saying dogshit is better than horseshit.

RAB HAS BEEN THREADBANNED FOR TROLLING. NOT FOR HIS STATEMENT ABOUT SALES. NOT FOR EXPRESSING DISCONTENT THAT IT WON'T SHOW UP ON THE WII, BUT FOR BEING A TROLL.. Glad to get that out of the way.

Zip May 16, 2008 04:56 PM

YES YES YES YE YES YES YESYEYSYESYESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS I came buckets!!! been waiting for this since.. since.. since release day of the first one!
Hopefully they'll be able to duplicate the awesome feeling you get while playing it. Also hope they dont do a Warriors within and try to 'appeal to a wider audience' .

With news of this, I only have one question...

Where the FUCK is my Breakdown 2? Jesus Christ

I like how bringing Okami into the argument is useless.

Okami Wii is a 2-year old port, that didn't achieve sales when it was originally released on PS2. Also from what I am led to believe it has received little to no marketing on its new console.

Tagonist May 18, 2008 04:52 AM

For what it's worth, I've got both PS3 and 360, and I am SO buying this one when it comes out... *_*
BG&E was one of those famous games that were more than the sum of their parts. Plus, it had a pretty good cast of characters, including a believable, non oversexed female lead. Something not too often seen in games...

Forsety May 18, 2008 05:55 AM

I have a hard time believing that just because BG&E sold better on the gamecube when it came out theres some magical guarantee all wii owners will jump on the sequel, especially considering the wii caters to a whole new audience than the gamecube did imo.

Yes, they both try to cater to "nintendo fans" but lets face it, the wii caters to the whole "casual crowd" now too, and I doubt casual gamers are going to be all over a hardcore adventure title like BG&E-- just honest truth there.

With that out of the way, this is exciting really no matter what console it's on. Pretty much agreed it's not likely to sell well (no matter what console, really) but if something like blue dragon or eternal sonata can break 100k I'm sure this can too, and hopefully that'll be enough to consider it something above "horrifying failure" at the very least. :(

No. Hard Pass. May 18, 2008 06:15 AM

Well, I'm fired up for this one. The first game was great.

I spent more time, effort and money ($0) on this clown-grade Photoshop than Ubisoft will spend marketing Beyond Good & Evil 2. :(

Gechmir May 18, 2008 10:11 AM

Infernal, you may have been indifferent toward BG&E1 (from what I recall in a discussion long ago), but still! <3

Yeah, I'm uneasy about what they might do in their approach. As mentioned earlier, Jade is an incredibly believable main character. I love a busty lady as much as the next fella, but throwing in a Double-D female wearing less fabric than a necktie makes the whole approach pretty god damn childish. I remember starting off in The Witcher thinking it'd be pretty good in its approach to female main characters, until they suddenly turn slut mode and were all SEX WITH ME to the main character who would just go "ok =0"

I'm not saying anything like RAGE, FEMINISM NEEDS TO STEP UP. Moreso that a lot of the character-types and designs make me unable to take the game seriously. Although, it's odd saying that considering all the furries in this game =[ The storyline unwinding for some reason made me think of a nice, high-quality 2D animation movie made in the states (I mean good ones, like from a decade or so back!). No clue why, but it felt like an awesome movie-length cartoon of sorts.

As long as Ubi lets Ancel do as he wishes, it'll turn in to a faithful sequel (or so I'd like to think). Ubi sequels often leave much to be desired... Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is an awesome game and all, but it had tons of gripes. Plus its storyline is so, so, SO clumsy. #1's wasn't a masterpiece, but at least you could follow it with ease.

Splinter Cell? It'd have a good installment and get kicked to the shit group. Unfortunately, people for some reason gobbled up Double Agent which sucked BALLS. And now the whole series is on a shitty path with Fischer going AGAINST THE MAN.

Prince of Persia was much the same ;-( First one was awesome, #2 was shit, #3 was... Ehh. An improvement from #2, but still.

Jade is gonna get porked by her uncle in this sequel. Count on it.
Spoiler:
Yes, "porked". I said it.

This is a sequel to a game that's a few years old, where the original didn't achieve sales when it was originally released on multiple platforms. The original also recieved little marketing back then.

My point was that third party titles of this nature aren't exactly picked up in droves by the Wii-owning demographic. Twilight Princess is a different beast entirely, coming from a well loved series, being a launch title, and being first party.

Perhaps there aren't enough similar titles on the platform to estimate exactly how well something of this nature would sell on the Wii, but I see a lot more parallels with it's theoretical Wii situation in Okami than I do in Zelda.

The Cube to Wii comparison isn't quite fair either. It's not exactly the same market we're talking here. Forsety has covered this entire point already though, much more succinctly than I could have.

It's not like I imagine it selling well on any console. But I don't see it doing better on Wii than on either of the other two.
