MS Notepad replacement?
 

I'm looking for a notepad replacement that color codes HTML and CSS, and shows line numbers on the left side. Other features included should be searching and replacing text, and changing the font being used by the notepad. It would be perfect if this was all the replacement did, but I'm not too picky.

VIM is quite awesome for all this. Of course, it takes a little getting used to if you've never used it or VI before, but it is my editor of choice.

If you want a Windows-only program and don't mind piracy/buying it, EditPlus is a close second for me.

I'm a fan of EditPlus 2. A couple yearsago, I too wanted to replace Notepad. I first settled on NoteTab Pro, but it wasn't satisfying enough. EditPlus 2 is a monster and has been my notepad replacement since, almost 2 years now. XEmacs is sweet too, and I keep that alongside since I have cygwin.

I love TextPad too. EditPlus might be better, but I'm so used to TextPad that it cuts anything I have to do in half. TextPad makes it incredibly easy to set up calls to external programs using the document you are currently editing.

I've been using EditPad Lite (there is also a Pro version) for years and I am completely satisifed with it. Even Lite is a monster of a program. I'm never going back to Notepad. Haha.

I use EditPad Pro. It kicks ass. Right now I'm using the Version 6.0.0 BETA 9 (open only to people who bought V5). It includes all new icons and tons of added features. Wait for the final version to come out and buy it. Tabbed files, spell checker, syntax highlighting, encoding display and conversion, and more options and text manipulation features than I can fathom.

I've used both EditPlus and TextPad before, but they didn't give me all of the features I wanted. After using EditPad Pro 6, I honestly can't imagine what more I could do with a text editor.

I pretty much use Textpad for everything also. Color codes everything in HTML, CSS and PHP (Maybe more, not sure). It also works very well for Java.

anyone know of a notepad-replacement program where you can color certain words each time they're typed? like if i wanted the word "shit" to turn red when i typed it (changed via some control panel or options menu), it would do it.

(basically, to clarify, i want customizable syntax highlighting. i realize editpad pro has this, but yeah, i don't want to pay for it.

TextPad does as long as you are willing to tie the coloring to all files of the same extension. You can create a syntax file that allows you to define keywords that always get highlighted in a certain color.

I would think any program that has syntax highlighting would have customizable syntax highlighting. That being said, vim ftw!

I have to echo the first poster and the one above me; vim is a great editor. Primarily because its available for just about any type of computer out there, and it can be used over ssh/telnet for remote coding and such. It does take getting used to however, but once you learn it, its a very powerful editor. And its open-source.
And a_naz, I have a mind to chop you up with my lightsaber for reccomending emacs ;)
(For those not in the know, the vim/emacs debate is a traditional "war" among unix users)
