Your Place of Thought

So...my thought of the day that seems to interest me the most is, where do you people have your good ideas/epiphanies. The Shower? The John? Somewhere else?

I myself, find that my well thought out abstract ideas come about while I'm in the shower. Not in the matter of epiphanies, but I have good abstract, creative thoughts while I'm in there. Something on the bounds of music and art, and links between things that don't seem that they're similar. If I do have an epiphany, it's generally along lines of "Oh, so that's why the chicken crossed the road!"

Yeah, but anyway where do you guys have your greatest thoughts?

No. Hard Pass. Apr 9, 2008 10:40 PM

I used to visualize shooting scenes in the shower, still do quite a bit, but I find the best place for me is actually lying on my balcony in Montreal. Something about the location does wonders for my creative juices.

When that isn't available, I've taken to storyboarding while sitting in this old gnarled tree at a local park in Regina. I find the background city noise very conducive to creation.

I actually have to keep a writer's journal by my bedside, because my spot happens to be my bed, as I'm falling asleep (or even in my sleep). I'll be thinking about... whatever... and I'll either think up a line that I like, or an idea for a story, or something... and I'll have to jot it down.

I've heard lots of people do their best thinking in the shower... I must be the opposite, because my brain shuts down when I'm in the shower. I'm just like 'ohhh, hot water' *relaxes*.

For me, I favor small walks around wooded areas to get the blood flowing. I often take walks in the rain. It's very refreshing. I know that might sound a bit gay, but it's QUITE FABULOUS. My creative juices have an easier time of coming out when I am entreched in those elements. Sometimes I just stop walking in the forest, and sit by a brook for a while, trying to hear the gurgling OMMM manifest. It hasn't yet, but I'm working on it.

These are the moments I treasure.

Simply, I like to feel free and walking in a forest, away from the hums of the highway, always does it for me.

Throwdown Apr 10, 2008 12:22 AM

Some of my greatest ideas come from when I'm skateboarding alone in a culda sack that doesn't have any houses built in it. I had to think of a song for a class tv project and I wrote all the lyrics on the griptape of my skateboard with chalk.

In bed at night.

"Oh that's awesome, I'll get to it in the morning!"

*Forgets*

I definitely think the most about things when I'm out for a run. I usually run at night so it's nice and peaceful. Additionally I really like to just lie down and look up at the stars or clouds on a nice night/day. I really find it easy to get lost for a while in my own thoughts.

Star Man Aevum Apr 11, 2008 12:52 AM

Just about everywhere because it's a bad day when I'm not thinking about absurd ideas. Usually the better ones come to me as I'm half asleep and wake up going "Eureka!". The most recent occurance has led me to pursue a body of art work to work on during the summer where I take the printed designs on clothes a step further, such as turning those skeleton print zip up sweatshirts into an actual skeleton jacket.

DarkMageOzzie Apr 11, 2008 04:46 AM

Work, since working at a grocery store is so dull that my mind tends to wander. Otherwise when I'm hanging out with friends because we just come up with the craziest stuff.

Summonmaster Apr 11, 2008 10:55 PM

I wouldn't call them great thoughts in particular, but I usually have the most random thoughts come to me when I'm lying in bed or in the shower. If I'm in bed, then it's when I can't get to sleep at night that I start thinking about all sorts of things which chain from each other through even the faintest thoughts, which then leads to some abstract concepts. In the shower, I'll just space out once in a while, especially since I don't like to get out, and it also results in more focused thinking looking at several ideas.

kat Apr 12, 2008 12:23 AM

Lately the only great thoughts I really come up with are ideas of creative lessons for my classes. Otherwise, I'm not exactly going to come up with a solution for 3rd world debt. This happen either in my car while in transit or in bed on the rare mornings I'm able to sleep in and lay around in a half drugged stupor.

Arkhangelsk Apr 12, 2008 02:50 AM

I don't feel very special anymore now that so many people have said "the shower," but that's where I have the most thoughts and ideas drift into my head. There's not much else to occupy my brain, and unlike when I'm going to sleep, it's still functioning in a way that I can remember what I was thinking about more or less after I get out.

Of course, this pisses my roommate off, because I tend to use up all the hot water after being in the shower so long, what with all my thinking ...

my happy place

My place would have to be the outdoors. It's a specific outdoors, like a great location for camping, the weather have to be just right, good friends, good food, good music. Taking in big breaths and quietly watching the sun set in the spring, summer, and fall while the leaves from the tree sounds with a cool/warm wind blowing . Listening to the waves at the beach rushing in into the shoreline and the sand rustling as the water draws back. These things reminds me that things in life will eventually fall into place as long as I stay focus, keep working hard, and stay true to myself. :p

Traveller87 Apr 13, 2008 06:40 AM

I come up with storylines in the bathroom. But the bed at night is definitely the place where most thoughts happen - it's hard to switch your brain off and go to sleep.

Also, some cafés are a good place to write. J.K. Rowling got that right.

Thanatos Apr 13, 2008 07:56 AM

My room, I usually walk around back and forth in my room (it's pretty small, but enough for me to walk), and kinda just.. well, let the brain does whatever it wants. Usually, it drifts around my studies, but once in a while from my studies it'll jump into something odd.

Hydra Apr 13, 2008 02:31 PM

My best ideas tend to come late at night, when I'm buzzed on caffeine and in the company of someone who can give/take a good argument. When I'm most argumentative and hyper, that's when I'm "in the zone" for coming up with good ideas. (Edit: the "where" for this tends to be in a lab, but that's more circumstance than anything methinks.)

The shower just puts me to sleep.

QuentinT Apr 14, 2008 05:18 PM

The Shower for me, I tend to reflect and think about alot of moments in the past, the good times.

NinjaguyDan Apr 14, 2008 05:25 PM

Definately the bed for me, I finally just put a notebook and lamp within close reach of my bed because 30 minutes into 'sleep' I would have an idea for a song or something.

Bernard Black Apr 14, 2008 06:12 PM

Either at some ridiculous hour of the morning when I'm still ambling about, or when I'm at work and therefore can't write any of them down. Being in the close vicinity of my best mate is pretty good too; we go absolutely nuts when we're together.

i am good at jokes Apr 14, 2008 09:01 PM

When I need inspiration or if I simply feel wound up, I go out for a walk and try to keep to the greener paths through the city. When I was back home, I used to go out for a walk in the woods with my dog. In any case, the essential elements are that I be in an open space and that there be the least people around possible.

Rydia Apr 16, 2008 12:54 AM

As strange as it sounds, I don't really sit down to think creatively or to come up with ideas for anything these days. I've seemed to lose my touch for creativity over the last couple years, but I remember that most of my original ideas and the like seemed to come while trying to fall asleep. Nothing in the shower or while driving.

xgoaogo Apr 17, 2008 04:25 PM

Two "places": Walking around this dreary town and laying on my bed w/ some music playing.

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Apr 17, 2008 04:27 PM

The bathroom, the shower, the back porch off of my room with a cigarette between my fingers. Ideas come to me at any time, though, so I always keep a small black notebook near to hand.

Josiah Apr 18, 2008 02:20 AM

It's oftentimes bed for me, but sometimes it can be just about anywhere since sometimes the music I listen to prompts a train of thought that eventually leads to an idea. The sort of idea can vary, depending on what I'm listening to (VGM, a movie soundtrack, etc.).
