BitTorrent help
 

I recently discovered Torrents, but when I use Bittorrent to start downloading them, it never wants to actually start :-s Maybe because I'm using a network internet connection... Or maybe because I don't understand how Torrents work... Or maybe there is a better application for downloading torrents.

In any case, some help would be really appreciated. :-)

Arguably the best BitTorrent client. It's defintely the smallest and the one that uses the lest resources. Being on a network connected to the internet (guessing you don't have any ports forwarded to your PC) might slow the torrent down, but it usually shouldn't stop it.

actually that didn't work either... When I did the speed configuration thing when you first start the program I could test forwarding a port or something like that and it gave an error saying it couldn't...

Having the port your Torrent program wants forwaded isn't essential. It just means that you're less likely to connect to somebody else on the same torrent who's in the same situation. Ask whoever set up your network or if you know what you're doing, forward the port yourself. You can also try here for help.

How many peers/leechers/seeds is your client reporting? If there's not many seeds and alot of leechers you might just be in a queue. Has it actually connected to the torrent? If it has, all you have to do is just wait, and you should eventually get everything.

0 seeds 0 leechers, so Utorrent can't connect to the internet... I tried messing around with the settings but at one point it became to complicated. I guess in this case I'll just have to accept not being able to use torrents.

I'm also on a network connection and have used utorrent. I had really good speeds at first but then they have started to decline, even worse than dialup. I use BitComet now and have much better connection speeds.

Yes, if there are 0 seeds and peers then the torrent is dead.

how can you possibly test bittorrent speeds? Theres never a constant so testing one client to another is impossible. Luck, seeds, tracker, peers, peers connections... too many factors to consider. Its annoying when people say its slow without any evidence. If you have your ports properly forwarded and the client isn't banned by others, it'll be fine.

First of all, uTorrent sucks.

Second of all, get Azureus.

Lol ... I guess thats why it rose from nothing to being the only client in competition with azureus... By sucking.

That and the other clients aren't actively developed as much as the 'two competitors.' (Either that or they suck, noting the mainline client.)
µTorrent has always seemed fishy to me; things seem to download much slower with it than with Azureus. (Also, µTorrent may only take up so much RAM itself, but I notice that the total physical RAM remaining when running it is about the same as when Azureus is running.)

So what you're saying is people switch to utorrent because it has lots of updates, not because its better. I see.

Are you trying to argue that azureus uses the same amount of ram as utorrent? That's wrong. Because if not, what are you saying?

If your really like azureus better, then use it. It's an amazing client I agree. I myself use it on my home computer with a 1gb of ram. But the fact is utorrent does almost everything that azureus does (cept rss 2.0 support ;( ... Thats why i use azureus on my home computer ) and does it with less resources.

Try reading next time: I said that while µTorrent's process itself takes up significantly less then Azureus's, the total free physical RAM on my computer always seems to end up being about the same between each client.

Also, don't put words in my mouth. I never said, "lol utorrent is only used because it has updates lol." I am saying that it's the only client in competition out there because there aren't many clients with much to look forward to, due to a lack of development. (Granted, this is referring to Windows.)

I'd like to point out that I never said, "OMFG I hate µTorrent. EVERONE USE AZUREUS" with any sincerity. I wanted to point out that one can't say that µTorrent is the only true competitor to Azureus without fully considering why.

Here's the thing. Download speeds don't vary from client to client, they vary because it's a natural thing for P2P.

If properly set up, any BT client will do the trick. Choosing one is just a question of personal preference.

And that of course is the big pitfall I'm faced with. Properly setting it up, because I know there must be a way around my problem. Just fidding around with all the options isn't going to get me there though... And I'm no pc wiz when it comes to network settings.

I've tried quite a few torrent programs (the original BT, BitLoard, BitComet, ABC, and uTorrent), and ABC works the best for me.

I tried utorrent, and god the interface was sexy. But I couldn't get any speeds. I tried at least 20 good torrents with lots of seeds and leechers, and my speeds wouldn't go past 15 kB/s, even with my ports forwarded and my settings optimized to the max.

I tried the same torrents on ABC, and there were no problems at all. It's funny how torrents are different with each person. :)

Bitcomet for me since it is "easiest" to handle.

People get uTorrent because it's as good as Azureus but uses about oh, 5% of the system ressources of Azureus...

I am currently having problems seeding a torrent after I originally posted it at the GFF Tracker. Nothing I do will allow me to seed it more, only download. Since it's fully on my PC, it's a waste of space just to download it and seed that way...

Anyone have any idea how to get uTorrent to access the torrent without downloading it? I am sure it's set up correctly, but so far only creating a new torrent is working.

Usually when that happens, look under the 'files' tab and make sure they're all 100%. It's most probably just that the directory you told uTorrent it was in is wrong. Example :

My music is in F:/LOSSLESS/album

When I tell uTorrent where to download so to seed, I just need to tell it to go to f:/LOSSLESS/ and it will automatically enter the appropriate folder. If i told it to go to F:/LOSSLESS/Artist - Album, it would look into F:/LOSSLESS/Artist - Album/Artist - Album, and not find the files it needs to seed.

Yeah, though will need to check to see if that's the issue here. That said, I just started to reseed the Salamander ~Again~ album and it started with no problems...

EDIT: Thanks, it was pointing in the wrong location after all and didn't notice. It's working fine now.
