Children of Men: The TV Series

Children of Men: The series
Since it looks like Bionic Woman is not coming back to NBC, although nothing's been confirmed, the executive producer is moving on. David Eick is writing a pilot based on the Alfonso CuarĂ³n film Children of Men for SciFi.

The film, brilliantly directed by the Mexican filmmaker, was a grim tale about the future -- England in 2027 -- where women have become completely infertile and the human race faces a major crises with less than a century to survive.

At the SciFi Channel's upfront, Eick said the proposed TV series would veer closer to the source material, P.D. James' novel. "It's really taking root more in the origins of the novels in that it will focus on the cultural movement in which young people become the society's utter focus."

Eick's version of Children of Men will also not star Clive Owen, Julianne Moore nor Michael Caine, who were all in the 2006 feature film. The TV Children of Men is going to question how society defines responsibility, freedom and a sense of values when it doesn't necessarily believe humans will survive as a species. "It's not really a war show like the movie was. It's more an exploration of that issue."

Eick is also preparing Caprica, a prequel to Battlestar Galactica for SciFi.
That came out of left field!

I loved the movie, and yet I hated the book with a passion. So for me to see that this new venture into that world will be based closely on the novel is a huge let down.

Then again, Eick is a masterful story teller and I love Battlestar Galactica oh so much.

Thoughts?

I had no idea the movie was based on the book. I'd like to read it. And this is definitely out of left field. I hope it turns out well because I loved the movie.

Never saw the movie, but it did sound pretty interesting. I'll definitely give this show a shot.

While the movie was indeed one of the best of the past few years, I cannot really see how they are going to turn this into a TV show.
That said, I haven't actually read the book, so maybe the source material is better suited for that.

Anyway, it's April 1st, so I'll take ANYTHING news related today with a grain of salt...

I'll watch it if the main character is hot like Clive Owen. The pregnant girl will go into labor during the first season finale, guaranteed.

I'm usually game for this sort of thing, but after I watched Children of Men I realized a post apocalyptic setting just isn't fun without the apocalypse. I would watch it just to see what they'll do with such a setting. Although, I felt like the focus of the movie on the possibility of pregnancy was almost a cop-out. I would enjoy a television series more if there were zero chance of a pregnancy occurring, which really would force them to focus on the issues the original post mentions.

No, no, no, no, NO.

One of the main reasons I loved the film was because it hardly explained anything. I like that illusiveness in a narrative. It could work, I'm just not sure how much they could milk out of the concept.

I've never understood why everyone flocked to the film. Its not a bad bit of moviemaking but its certainly not the amazing cinematic experience everyone said it was. It had obvious plotholes and good production design - just like every other movie out there.

Maybe something is lost on me.
