So I started playing Ninja Gaiden Black today..

Heard a bunch of hype about this game, with some people saying it's even better than DMC3. And to them, I say lol.

The controls in NG work, but they're way too slippery.

And the camera is probably one of the worst I've seen in an action game this past gen. It's really really bad.

I want to like this game, but it's just bugging me too much. I don't get the love some people have for it.

How many times did you die in the first level?

Well, just so you know that there's a difference between dying because a game is too hard, and dying because the camera is shitty.

Which is not to say that I think NGB is wurst game evar, but I agree that the controls seem off, and the camera is troublesome.

Twice. The game is a bit unfairly hard sometimes. They should have let the player have the easy mode option without needing to unlock it. That was stupid.

But that isn't why the game stinks. It's the sloppy controls and horrible camera.

LivingDreams Mar 29, 2006 03:26 AM

I have the regular ninja gaiden, not black so I dont know what they "improved", but I never had a problem with the controls except that I couldnt memorize certain moves. I had a little problem with the camera but nothing big for me to complain about.

Grundlefield Earth Mar 29, 2006 03:50 AM

Yeah I like how it wasn't even a big deal. Which is why its one of the greatest action games ever made.

Best thread idea ever.

"I was told this game is better than DMC3. It doesn't have dante, so that's untrue, I will make a thread about this"

Kloak Mar 29, 2006 06:50 AM

I never played Ninja Gaiden Black. I heard there was an easy mode which I guess alot of people need...lol

I have the original Ninja Gaiden for X-box and I must say its one of the top hardest games to play (please don't compair with DMC3, Ninja Gaiden is HARD not CHEAP). ANyways...never really had problems with controlling either, but yes SOME camera angles can be a pain....but not to the point where you blaim it for not beating the game.

I understand how you could dislike the camera, but what's so sloppy about the controls? As long as you know what you're doing you should have no problem.

I'd say NG edges out DMC3 in my book, although I personally found God of War was a heck of a lot more fun, than both combined too. As much as I like a challenge, some of the things in both NG and DMC 3 were at times unnecessarily difficult and just a chore to beat. Though Shinobi on PS2 remains the most frustrating game of its kind that I've played, and just couldn't take it anymore.

Shenlon Mar 29, 2006 08:56 PM

Both NG and DMC3 has its flaws and its high points. Just becuase you were expecting it to be like another game you cant let that cloud your judgment on how the game really is otherwise your really missing out on a whole game altogether.
As for me, I liked dmc3 better but I enjoy NG becuase its really fast paced with no slowdown and sometimes you can accidently pull off major attacks without even knowing it. Both of them have their ups ^_^

This is the thread that's started huge board wars on Gamefaqs.

"IS DMC3 BETTER THAN GOD OF WAR AND NINJA GAIDEN" and vice versa vice versa.

Magic Mar 30, 2006 01:45 AM

Well, hopefully we can do this a bit more intelligently than GameFAQs. I wouldn't really compare Ninja Gaiden to Devil May Cry 3 anyway because it's sort of like comparing Super Mario Brothers to Sonic the Hedgehog. They have similarities, but ultimately they're very different games. According to some of the FAQs I've read (on GameFAQs no less) Ninja Gaiden is built more like a fighting game than a 3D action/platformer.

Zip Mar 30, 2006 05:28 AM

NG is pure on action, with one or two silly puzzles (press this button to get this key to unlock that door). Ive never had any problem with the camera and the controls are fast and accurate whenever i play. Maybe it's your controller. It's shit hard though.

Darkelf Mar 30, 2006 11:02 AM

Same here, own the original NG and the game is tough (way beyond tough actually) but the more you play it, the more you learn from your mistakes. In other words, skill ultimately pays off big time in Ninja Gaiden. And I never had any frustration due to poor camera or controls. In fact the only times I was frustrated in NG was because of my own incompetence. Harhar!!

I own DMC3 and while it's a superb actioner I'd still pick NG as the more polished game because of its fluent controls and immensely satisfying combat. Though Dante can be a whole lot of fun too.

I like how every time someone has a different opinion than you on IRC or on forums, you say either a) "YEAH I LIKE HOW -insert opposite opinion here-, b) say something ridiculous and then repeat it every time the person replies to you, c) both of the above, or d) call them a complete fucking idiot.

You ROCK.

It's a good thing nobody made a thread like that. That'd be stupid.

I don't believe I ever said I expected it to be like another game.

As far as the combat system goes, NG is definitely deeper than DMC3, but that doesn't make it more -fun-. I agree with one of the people above though: GoW is the more fun game over both of those.

By the way though, I wasn't really comparing DMC3 to Ninja Gaiden in my original post. But I've heard from countless "fans" of it that NINJA GAIDEN IS THE BEST GAME EVAR AND DMC3 FUCKIN' SUCKS. So when I finally got to play this for a while, I couldn't understand thinking that.

Also, I stuck up for this game a couple times in the past, only playing like the -very- beginning. I didn't notice any of the problems. But now that I tried playing all the way through black, I did.

But to each their own. :P

scotty Apr 1, 2006 01:17 AM

one thing I don't like about NG is that the levels are not designed to be back tracked, which you have to do a bit of in the first level. The camera doesn't want you to go backwards at all...

Shenlon Apr 1, 2006 07:23 AM

Well if you were trying the game out becuase your friends told you that it was better than dmc, then you must have compared it to some extent.
But I agree that each person has different taste, some like ninjas, some like half-deamons. I think some ppl like NG, not just becuase its fast, but becuase they're hardcore fans of the oldies from the genesis days, but of course there are always the doa and shinobi fans as well ^^
I think the only thing I find in common with this is the frustration in difficulty.

I'm sorry for humping this thread, but I need to know. Has anyone heard anything about the 360 compatibility of Ninja Gaiden Black? There's an update that the auto-updater keeps trying to download. Either it locks up when I'm in a profile, or the bar completes, the system reboots, and then when I go back into the game it installs the update again... that's when I'm not in a profile.

If I don't install the update, the frame rate sucks ass. This was its problem back when the game first came out, but I recently heard that they updated it and fixed it. Anyone have any idea how to get around this crappy update loop?

evergreen May 17, 2006 09:09 PM

As far as I know, even when you update the Backwards Compatibility update on via burning it to a CD, NGB is still a lot slower on the 360 than the original XBox.

I agree with you on the shinobi issue sir. Shinobi is still by fare the cheapest and most frustrating game on the motherfucking planet. Levels without actual floors FOR THE MOTHERFUCKING LOSE. I still prefer DMC3 over NG in terms of setting and art which equals to me liking DMC3 over NG overall so i will just slide on out of this thread.

sabbey May 21, 2006 01:50 AM

I guess I would like to know whether it's worth buying if one already owns the original release. Was originally going to look into getting a copy since I never could get past the second boss, and figured the easy mode might help. But, since I just did finally (after more than a year) get to the third level and the game feels easier now that my dumbass learned how to block, well... ;)

reflectiVe May 22, 2006 02:58 AM

...Hahaha. Sorry. Just had to laugh at first.

It's okay, I understand it's a hard game. Just like DMC3 - it will frustrate you. I've played mastered DMC3:DE & SE, Ninja Gaiden & NG:Black. I've even played way before Black was released with the hurricane packs. Neither game was easy but I had a blast playing them. I don't see how Ninja Gaidens camera angle is "horrid." If anything DMC3 has the worst camera angle. It's just something you have to adjust to like in every other game you play. Btw, did you try clicking right thumb stick in to change the camera style? Prollllly not. ;)

Anyway, the first level is cake. I'd love to see this guy up against the black ninja's :D...or the Cats (without Lunar).

EDIT: Also I do agree that Shinobi for PS2 is still one of the most frustrating games I have ever played for the PS-fucking-2. I still like Z.O.E.2 though...not hard at all - just fun and fast paced. :)

Just got my Xbox 360 so I'm kickin' it up with Oblivion & Ghost Recon!

Personally, I think DMC 1 thru 3 is shit compared to Ninja Gaiden. Bad camera system sounds like a cop out to me, maybe if you played the Ninja Gaiden pre Hurricane Pack that can be a good excuse, but they fixed the camera in Ninja Gaiden Black, so the camera was very easy to manage.
