Gamingforce Weekly Audiosurf Challenge - Merv gets his Dido on

NINJA MONO ONLY. IRONMODE ON. THROUGH THE FIRE AND FLAMES

I described in my journal a few days ago a ruleset for a casually competitive way to play Audiosurf. Barring any major complaints here, it was given the go-ahead to be tried out here.

The rules are basically this:
A song is selected to be played for the week. To avoid the differences that occur in how the tracks are generated, a download will be provided for a common rip of the song. This is so everyone has the same track generated (thus making it "fair.")

You will have the week to get the highest score possible, using any character, in any difficulty, ironmode on or off. Before anyone says anything, yes it is possible for the beginner classes to get scores higher than even the elite classes.

When you want to submit your score, all you have to do is take a screenshot of the end results, highlighting your score, with the popup of the graph showing, and then post it. (Like this) You are allowed to submit as often as you want, as long as it is before the deadline for the week. If you have already done the song before (the competition,) that score cannot be submitted (you'll just have to try and beat your own score!)

When the week is up, the person with the highest score is the winner. The winner then posts the song to be played for the next week, along with the graph of the track, where it all starts over again. This picked song could be anything. Any genre, any style, any whatever you want it to be. It is acceptable to give a brief description of the track, to prepare everyone what to expect. In the instance that the winner doesn't select a track, the next highest scorer picks the track.

Anyone is allowed to join in at any time and submit a score. You do not have to participate in every week. The only grounds for disqualification is cheating (through hacking, retagging a song, etc.) I don't care if you own the game legitimately, but I would prefer that you have a fairly recent version (at least the February 27th or March 7th update, since they changed track generation, I believe.) Although, at the price of $9.95, it's completely worth it, and Steam isn't really all that bad now.

To start this week off, I have selected a track.

Basically, bitrock. It has the intensity of rock music, with the nostalgic sound of chiptunes.

Current Scoreboard:
packrat: 220,779; Mono
Slash: 214,852; Mono
The Dopefish: 204,307; Mono
The_Griffin: 181,552; Mono
Little Shithead: 168,232; Mono
Taco: 83,609; Mono Pro

You have until next Monday (March 31st) to submit scores for this week.

Sure, why not?

Edit: Oops, forgot my graph. I'll get it later, too lazy now.

I totally think that allowing double is gay lol. Or for kicks, randomize the "mode" up like for one week its mono or double but you can choose the mode you do (casual, pro, elite)

I'll post my scores in a bit

Updated Score. My eyes are burning from playing lol

If I could understand why I am not getting that 21 block bonus I would be in first place right now.

packrat Mar 26, 2008 09:54 PM

I'm more curious as to why your duration time is one second less than all of ours.

Dopefish Mar 26, 2008 10:31 PM

I downloaded the same song as all of you. If anything, my accomplishment is one second better!

Slash Mar 27, 2008 01:29 AM

Updated score..if any of ya'll beat my score, you deserve it.

Cheers

Okay, so it appears that I won that round.
So, behold the next challenge:

At a little over nine minutes, this ambient collaboration between Laraaji and Brian Eno, from the album "Day of Radiance," is a true test of endurance. Now, don't be fooled by the Ambient label, as it is chock-full of sonic traffic.
Just on a casual run-thru, I've managed to achieve scores in excess of 800000 points. I trust for this competition we'll see scores breaking the million point mark. :3

I think everyone wins because we actually went through that song lol

That song was traumatic pain...

Dopefish Apr 1, 2008 09:08 AM

It is just like the last song, but, sadly, much longer.

What do you mean by that?
Unless you are re-compressing the mp3 to a 20kbps bitrate, it shouldn't sound all that similar.

Or are you referring to the fact that its a simple "downhill" song?
Cuz those are the most challenging and fun ones. I've yet to see a song that goes uphill meet those criteria. :(

Yeah but it gets a little stale having every song downhill all the time.

Slash Apr 7, 2008 09:46 AM

God this song was weak...so long...and mind numbing

Slash Apr 10, 2008 03:47 PM

I prolly should say this now, but whenever I win the week, I don't really care about choosing a new song, so whoever want to take it, go for it.

I'm more concerned about NOT failing school

packrat Apr 10, 2008 03:59 PM

I would imagine that selecting a new song would require less time than perfecting a weak, long, and deliberately mind-numbing piece.
